Fuzzy: Yeah, I have a feeling that the shadows arent deep enough either.... just couldnt keep my eyes open to work on it anymore!

Juggs: Yeah she has a nice set of moonpies on her huh? :P
The shading looks burnt because Im using the burn brush to shade the skin. I will be adjusting the overall look of that once I have the face completed too.

For the lineart, I actually imported it in, went to my channels and selected the blue channel. I loaded it as a selection, Inverted to select the lines only, then placed this on a new layer and filled the lines. I buggered up and didnt take off anti aliasing though, so using the wand to select areas for coloring was only succesful to a limit.... lots of brushing to fix up spots! Being this is my first ever PS attempt I figure one big mistake is allowed.... I'll never make it again though lemme tell ya!

Bleegs: Cool tut, thanks for that man! I have no doubts that it will help greatly.... have to reread it and let it seep in now!

Noob: We all love ya ya bastard! Would be nice to see more of ya around here though..... Youve deserted us! :P

And Arthur.... what can I say besides thanks?
 If you werent already a MotM I'd nominate ya again! I really appreciate the time you took to whip out that video!
Few questions for you though:
Do you always rough out your painting using so few layers? I have a seperate layer for every bit of coloring I have on this pic.... pretty close to about 50ish layers so far! :gasp:

The brush you are using in the video, is that a default brush? I cant seem to get nice airbrushed effects like you do, they usually end up pretty mottled, like they are mixing the foreground and background colors?

On a side note.... once again I hate you! :P
You painted that up in twelve minutes.... I wont even tell you how long it took me to get to the base color point!

Thanks for the feedback everyone! :bfoot:

My god, Eye! Release yourself from segregated layers and merge damn you!

Layers do not help avoid mistakes, they simply lock you into too many realms. Be fearless and free! No more than 3 color layers for such a piece, Max!

 50 layers eye,i rarely have over 10 depending on the complexity of the pic,but because i more or less paint now i just go over my mistakes with the brush.

its been a good 3 years since i've done comic bookish type coloring but yeh,i remember having 40 odd layers too,i can't really remember why.

Interesting.....
I always assumed you guys used a huge variety and amount of layers for your compositions, so I was trying to get used to working that way. I will start to merge them down, and use fewer of them as well!

When painting, I use layers mostly as a running history, but not for seperate elements.

Typically I have:

  1. Rough Sketch
  2. Refine Sketch (sometimes merged with Rough Sketch)
  3. Base Color (underneath the Sketch)
  4. Paint 1+ (sometimes I'll have lots of these if I want to keep the progression for a tute, but often it's just a couple)
But in the case of comic-style, you might:

  1. Line Art
  2. Base Color
  3. Shadow Layer
  4. Highlight Layer
But really, if i'm doing cell shaded look, I just do it in Flash.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Where I get layer heavy is when I'm doing layouts with text and such. But, even then I doubt I go much beyond 20-30. Even my comic layouts are less than 20 I think.

It's a custum brush. It's basicly allmost the same settings as the one Bleego used when he posted it in one of these threads. (Pressure sensetivity on opacity and size. Hardedged brush)

You can download my brushsettings here:

here's how you open it (rightclick)

There's also a nice blender brush there called "BLENDER" you have to use it with the "smudge" tool. It creates a nice "inbetween colour" when you drag it on the wanted area. It uses a random scatter value, so it might be slow on bigger strokes.(I usaly just use the "colourpicker" as a blender. But if I want an extra smooth gradient I use that one)
There are other custumbrushes there aswell. Some of them are taken from other random artists.

I use truck loads of layers too eye! On that boot camp poster I did recently, I had close to 100! Needless to say I was getting regular 'swap disk full' errors

However I just feel using more layers gives a new artist more flexibility to keep parts of a drawing they like, while sperately working on the parts that need improving. Right? We're not all confident demi gods who can spill a tin of paint and have the resultant art hung in the National Gallery of Art :)

Da vinci was a layers man - you all know it. If leo were alive today he's say:

T'as une tête a faire sauter les plaques d'egouts!

No wait, that's french. And it also has nothing to do with layers whatsoever. But you get the idea!

Well post it again Noob!...... jeez.... sometimes your such a noob! :P

I really like your set there Arthur, those top two brushes especially. Thx again! ;)

I got a few more hour in tonight.
Really toned down that sunburnt look.
Changed the background...again!
Played with changing the black outlines to colored lines in spots. Not sure about that yet though.
I also lost the moon, I tried a few different looks with it and wasnt too happy. :yfok:

Posted Image

I also spent some time finishing off the face, and adding some texture, shadows and highlights to the hair.
Tommorow I have to start working some tone back into the flesh again!
Posted Image

I also spent a few minutes on the lizard dude. Added some textures and basic shadows and highlights.
Posted Image

I think Im going to go for a more tropical look overall, so the harsh greens of the foliage will be toned down big time. Especially the close grass.
I also still am not happy with that gradiated background. I think it clashes with the painterly style I am aiming for. So I think I will sample some colors off it and take a shot at painting my own.

And I did manage to cut down on a few layers! Maybe working with 20ish now!
But hey, thats more then a 50% reduction.... not bad for a noob is it?

Bad Shayne! Slap on the wrist! You still aren't defining shadows and highlights. Plan them out EARLY or it will get you in trouble. Also, since you got rid of the moon you lost your prime light source, I've had to make a new one for you. I'm nowhere near as good with lighting as Comlock, so take this with a grain of salt.

Posted Image

The lighting at dusk is generally very blue shadows and orange lighting. If the sun is below the horizon (magic hour), then the entire sky acts as a fill light, and everything takes a bluish cast.

Fuzzy, love your molecule. It has a great cut-out look.

The main issue with your lighting is that you can't seem to agree on a light source; your highlights and shadows are all over the place; from looking at the bottom half of his body, I would have said that the light was coming from above, but the shadows on his face says the light is coming head-on. Pick one point for the light to come from and work from there.

You've also got a bit of a large empty space in the lower righthand quadrant. I tried mucking with the composition, but I couldn't come up with anything better. It's not a huge deal, anyway; the picture works pretty well as-is.

Lastly, bold up those dollar signs a little. Have you considered making his pupils dollar signs too?

hmm most peoples attempts on this girl pic here are looking really flat and have no depth.

goddamn i want to give it a go but i have zero time aaarggh!

the characters seem to be all the same tone,u need to think about whats the main point of the pic,in this case its the woman, make her stand out.

Thanks for the mock up Ri.... the light source on that angle really looks good.

So what your telling me is that I should decide just where the hell my light source is and rough out my shadows/highlights pretty much right off the bat? Before adding any details at all? I knew there must be some method to the order in which someone paints things.....
What I wouldnt actually do to be in the same room and watch you, Com, and Bleego paint something from start to finish! Although none of ya would get much painting done bacause of the never ending stream of questions I'd be throwing at you...

I promise I will get those shadows and highlights in before anything else! ;)

working on some character concept art for an rpg im working on. these are the kinds of projects that i do all by myself and stuff, then leave it in a box for a few years and will probably try and pitch it to a publisher. (not the best plans, but there's not much i can do now)

I need more practice. Then Ill give ya some real crits ^^
You are very very talented Mal. Very.

The one eye furthest away from the camera is smaller than the other one, but maby you did that intentionaly

Sweet baby jesus.

Technically it's very, very good. I'd work on your concept though; all RPG's have young athletic females for characters. Go outside the box. Old women aren't used very much, for example. Or try mixing archetypes to make up something new.

But geez... my stuff at 15 was utter shit compared to that. :gasp:

Edit: Just saw a bit of a problem area... the nearest shoulder looks very small and broken at the joint. Lift up the deltoid slightly and make it bigger. Fix the crease between her arm and torso.

That link doesent work.
Are you talking about this Zwickel?

his legs are unatural. It looks like both his tighs are pointing out in 180 degrees.
his arms are stretched down, but when you look at his shoulders they are going up. They should be pushed down.

Here's some pose suggestions.
Well, atleast I tried
You should ask Mal, Ang,Bleeg, Noob or Kib for better figure drawing advices=)
