Here's the rough painting of the new log with the ants on:
(there's also a bit more details on the landscape in the background between the man and the girl)

It's really coming along, Comlock. The ants and the log are working really well and I love the light coming through that one ant.

The old man character is leaning forward under a lot of weight, but his legs still seem a bit awkward to me, perhaps where they meet the boots. I know he's meant to be short and stubby like Jane's father in Tarzan, but the legs are just a bit too bent for my eyes.

He also looks a bit washed out compared to the woman with the map, and both of them look washed out compared to the ant. You've got the characters back-lit, which is always a challenge. Even though we are seeing the shadow side of the characters, the colours you use need to be stronger if they are close to the viewer.

Take a look, too, at the silhouettes of the figures. Some of them are strong (the dog, the walking guy, the map woman) and others do not read as clearly (the kid sitting down and the old man). I know you're already in advanced stages here, but the poses say so much about the characters. What if the kid character was facing the other way? It could be watching the old man argue with the woman and would bind them together in the narrative much more.

Keep at it, Comlock. You've come so far. Take it home, baby! :D

And Smoscar is right: that is one BF dog!

Thanx for the comments Festival Bobcats, smoscar_01 and Kib =)

Festival Bobcats: yes, photoshop

smoscar_01: haha, you're right. I didnt see that before you've mentioned it. I adjusted the size now

Kib: fixed the legs. I wanted the ants to have the highest contrast and saturation to make it easier to see them, since they are so small. But I adjusted the saturation and contrast on the woman and man a bit more to make the colours less washed up. It was hard to adjust it, since im realy blind on this picture now. Rotated the kid..

So heres how it is so far:

Go go Comlock - looking good

Cheat a little - maybe some more ligth(contrast) in the left side - a sun beam or something.

Great piece...

Heres a little animation experiment - silly but fun to do...

Jumping man with hat

Hey Arthur, I think your need more pronounced hightlights, right now everything feels a little too smooth, somehow it does not really match with the lighting of the scene.

I've quickly gone over it a bit, you could probably push it some more...

edit: http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/340/arthurhelp1ze.jpg

I think you are too focused on blending, some stuff that is smooth would be better of as a flat plane. Maybe you need to use a bigger brush to get the planes modeled. I don't know how you are doing it, but I think you size down your brush too early in the process.

Posted Image

See the cast shadow here? It's a little messy, you can clearly see the strokes.
Either the brush is too small, or the dynamics of your brush are varying too much.
You need to simplify it.

Personally I try to avoid having both shape- and other dynamics active at the same time in the rough stage of anything in the painting. It's fine for detail, but it tends to be a little more messy when blending.
If you wanna use em both look at Dave's paintings, he allways starts out very big.

Flatten and simplify
Work with larger brushes and remove unnecessary brushstrokes. See the bad and better example below. I really didn't do much on the second one. It's actually simplified. It's surprising how much a little flattening here and there can do. I did spend some extra time on the face though. A bad face can ruin everything. Image is from reference.

Thanks for the crits Rubber=)
I was a bit unshure of the lighting on the two main characters since the sun is almost behind them, and I wanted to avoid so it look like it was above them.
But your version seems to work pretty nicely, so i'll change that. =)

Nothing in this image is cleaned up yet. So the thing with the cast shadows is only a temporarly stroke. Just to get the direction of the cast shadow. I clean up, and turn ugly gradients into cleaner flatter planes at the end with the colourpicker and brush tool. It all looks ugly now so it would be easier to edit later.

here's a 100% resolution of the man. I know its realy messy right now, but i'll simplify the strokes, and group them into cleaner blocks of colours at the end

some cleanup at the gras straws infront, and a bit on the log as an example:

Haha, I'm liking the kid sitting down.

This painting kind of reminds me of a Disney movie..... like Tarzan or something. Like the little professor and the girl.

i can't see where the backpack attaches to the old man
I see two straps on his chest...but those look more like pants straps, because that pack is freakin' huge and should be pulling against his chest alot....and make his shirt pull in and poof out next to the backpack straps...

acctually, I forgot to add them=)
those are just pants straps^^

Thanks Villageidiot

Some more details in the background (more forest, some more details on the mountain) Maby some of the "wrinkles" on the mountains are to small. I guess I should block them in to larger chunks..

You're not the only one... I could definitely see some of this work, especially Comlock's work hanging in an art museum in five or ten years.

I agree...I'd love to have a huge poster of this once it's done! Lucky me, I work at a printing place that offers free printing benefits.

Loving it so far Comlock...you invoke a tremendous amount of inspiration as well as envy from me. :P
