I've been slowly developing this character. I'm trying to get dynamic poses a la John K, & I think I'm starting to really get to where I want to go in the last drawing, in both pose & character: paranoid, ill-tempered, and disconnected. Any C&C is always welcome.    I'm going to keep working on him & I'll post some more soon. (If the first one looks familiar, I posted a while back in the daily sketch thread :P) |

Delicious colors. Reminds me a bit of an very old piece of mine, only much more successful. Alas, I'm not sure about that cast shadow, looks like you phoned it in. And where is that loverly specular highlight on the eye coming from?  Is the light meant to be behind the subject in the distance? |

Haha! Commy called me out on the similarity to Goo a while ago. I kinda did an "oh f*ck," shrugged, and got on with my life. I think I subconciously copy you. The light is supposed to be about ten feet away, I guess, above and behind. The cast shadow was, as you said, an afterthought (but what does "phoned in" mean? :-D). The speculars on the eyes are due to my old art teacher saying that eyes always look better with them. Is she full of crap? What would you do instead? |

Something like this... (didn't bothering lighting the stick) But it may be a little moody for this character. In which case, you might introduce a fill light to the left and in front of it. (very convenient for aforementioned eye specular) "phone it in" = "afterthought" She not full of crap, but there is a balance. I do think speculars in the eyes add life, but when they're completely at odds with the lighting, they break the illusion. BTW, normally, I would've said, "great jorb, ang, it's gorgeous (which it is)" but since you mentioned it was a lighting exercise, I had to rag on ye....

Very nice Calco, but the right hand (our left) is a little too small. I like it and your concept sketches. Kinda reminds me of "A Ghost in the Shell" which is one of my all time favorite movies. |

I started this drawing after hearing a song by "The Offspring" entitled "Gone Away". It's nowhere near finished, but I wanted to mess with the perspective quite a bit. There are probably quite a few mistakes in it already, so feel free to help out some. The colors for the guy haven't been decided, nor have the sky colors been either. i feel his nose is pointing the wrong way, calco. everything is angled to the right. so maybe his nose should be too. |
