Well here's what I got accomplished today.
I finished off the lower part of the outcrop, and started to try and fix the perspective problem uptop. Im not sure at this point if Im fixing it or fucking it.... :worry:
I also took Com's advise on the direction of light. It will emit from behind and above the snakes head. I have the "roof vent" in the cave blocked in in NP blue, but you cant see it very well in the photo.
I also started in on the foreground elements.

Now I'm tired.... and to quote a recent AnimOTD, "Me eyes are blurry!!"

Anyone have any ideas what this gal could be reaching for over on the other rock?
I was thinking something symbolic like a pillow with a couple rings on it. Or of course there is always money? I dunno, I'm stumped on it.

Shane, how are you shading this? Don't tell me it's pointilism or I'm going to die...

Shayne, I know I'm late to the party, but DAMN that's a huge improvement. Good job. Definitely intesify your shadows and highlights (Get some white acrylic and a teeny brush if you feel like lightening some areas again).

Well Im gonna say its pretty good, you dont need to put it down like that ;) It looks a bit strange when the shovel changes hands, other than that :bing:

Hrmmm, I see your point on both levels.

On the first, it's my attempt to maintain a thick skin. Somewhat like "if I give the first and harshest critique, the others wont be so offensive."

>_>

<_<

Ok, so it probably doesn't work, but still LoL.

On the second, do you think it would help if I added a slowdown to each exchange of hands, or could it be that I distorted something?

Both of them are pretty sloppy but I learned a lot getting em done.

I don't think it's the least bit sloppy....I think it looks great! I like how you've suggested her vinyl/latex attire using a combination of lines & shading. Looks very good....as does her round butt! Is it strange to like cartoon asses?

I think her face could use the same amount of attention to detail as the rest of her body. Her suit has much more intricate work put into it than her face, which is always an important area of interest. Maybe try just pushing the darks & pulling the highlights? I'm not sure...

Her hairline on her forehead looks a little odd with the straight lines....I'd break them up a bit, as well as the defining line of her skull above her right eye, on the top of her head.

Looks great though....great rendering & female form!

===

I'm deciding on colors for my character here, & I'm kinda at a loss. This is a stage of character development that I don't shine at, so I figured BW might be able to help me out. I have 4 possiblities here, but nothing's carved in stone yet. I also think I'm going to make his polka dots smaller & possibly some other color than white, because I think they draw too much attention right now.

If anyone has any other ideas for a color scheme that they'd like to see, fire away....I'm extremely open to suggestion. If it helps, he's a short-fused, physically abusive antagonist type.

Screw conformity!

I prefer number 3 or 4 as there is more colour variance.

Its enirely up to you.

Sharkcellar: Sweeeeet

to dazla: put your frame rate up to 25fps, and it will look smoother. I also wouldnt use radial gradients for filling in those sections of the rotating disc. Gradients aren't usually a good idea unless used correctly. they can look naff and unprofessional. but then again change the gradient fills and how saturated they are and they may look better. ;)

i agree with you on 1. His color of cloths there dont distract me from what hes waring but allows me to look at the character.

I have to say #3. #2 is somewhat of the "usual" color scheme (red and black), which I tend to deviate from. That and the fact that crimson shorts on a red character (IMO) draws attention away from the action in an attempt to affirm the character design itself in one's mind.

I like it, it made me chuckle ^_^

Thanks for all the input everyone, much appreciated. I ran this by my comrade who's co-writing this short with me & he likes 3 as well, so we may be going with 3. I'll have to do a fully-rendered test before anything is final, but 3 has steadily been growing on me. Colors are something that I find myself playing with forever, yet can never seem to come to a sudden, "That's it!" moment.

Juggz, Ketchup, and Colesif thanks for the positive responses!

Ketchup,

Those are good crits. I usually have a lot of trouble with hair. I've been working on it lately so your comment is well heeded. You're right about the contrast in her face something got lost in translation there.

Sweet and I will work on it this weekend and upload it on monday so people can have a look!
Thanks for the input.
This may sound stupid but just wanted to know why make it 25fps because wouldn't that then be uneven because at the mo It's either on 12 or 24fps and I have the rotation rotation at 180 degree's at the 24 and back to the start at 48 frame making it take two seconds to do the full rotate.

I've been working on an updated version of a character "Catoman." The first version on the right was used in the Flash games I made in early 2003. He will eventually have a BoogaTech-website-exclusive series where he is the website's tech-support.

Hey Markham. I enjoy the attitude of your cat, the completely apathetic look is very appealing. But I think his design could stand some improvement. The triangle arms are doubling as whiskers to me, and his face isn't constructed (the eye doesn't create any change in his face shape). A softer design will make him more condusive to stretching and squashing, which is a prime characteristic of a flexible animal. Also, think about if he's a real cat with cat-like behavior or a man in a cat-suit. If he's the former, find a real cat and draw some action. Also think about if he's exclusively two legs, four legs, or both (ala Garfield).

Once again, thank you Calco. I've made what seemed to be needed improvements, so while it's still jerky I hope it comes across better.

Now one of my problems is I dont know how to blur in flash. In fact, I'm pretty well hopeless with actionscript. Are those tutorials already listed?

Also, I downloaded a "perspective grid", however it's an MXP file. How do I intigrate that with flash (I'm using Flash MX)?

Lucky for you, you don't need to know how to use blur to solve your problem. I use smear frames all the time in my animation; Warner Bros and Disney were using this technique for decades with good results (they also had airbrushing, but that's another story ;) )

Posted Image

Instead of doing a normal-looking shovel, you stretch the shape out so it covers the distance and doesn't strobe. And also note that there are lots of ways to draw smears, this just happens to be my preference. Check out some old Looney Toons for other ways of handling this.

You have to download that Flash thing that will let you install components...
Great cats, Markham and Ang.
