The Demon Plasterer

((I put this up on dA which is why it has the image.))![]() They dance in your footsteps To the tune that you hum But don’t stop your humming Or for you they’ll come... Come with me, learn from me... suspend what you think you know of the darkness and the light... there are stranger things than we can know on this Earth... “C’mon, I’m sure she didn’t mean it...” said Jack. “Well, I- Whoops, it’s past midnight. I’d better go..” “No, Jack! Don’t go!” said Harry. “Stay with us! We’re staying the night right here!” “No, no, I can’t. I promised my mom and dad I’d be back by one, and I’ve got a mile to go.” “Aww...” “Bye.” Jack Normandy, 16 and slightly drunk, picked up his bag. He waved good-bye to his friends. The woods where they had been having their party, Carrick Forest, were fairly large, and mostly hemmed in with fields. The recent August harvests had left the fields barren before the reseeding, and in the moonlight the bare furrows looked like concrete. The sounds of his friends’ drunken laughter died away as Jack walked through the woods. The occasional shaft of moonlight through the foliage lit his path, his footsteps were the only sound. But then another sound broke the calm silence; there was a squeak, behind him. Jack span around, and saw a flash of blue. Just a mouse, caught in the moonlight... Jack thought, but his heart was racing. Something about that high-pitched noise hadn’t sounded like a mouse... more like a short, sharp call. Jack spotted the edge of the woods, and smiled to himself - but just as he did, there was another squeak. However, this time there was something sinister about it. Jack was sure it got closer before it quietened. Once again, Jack turned around. He jumped, there were hundreds of blue eyes! No, no, he thought. It’s the moonlight... the wind blew, and the leaves around him swayed; he could see now that what he had thought were eyes were leaves shining in the light. Jack turned back to the field, and started to whistle. The moon was directly ahead, and the trees all around him were lit in relief. He was walking along the footpath when he noticed the stars overhead; he craned his head back to admire them, still whistling. He was looking to the right, towards Ursa Major, when he caught a flash of blue in his shadow, behind him. He stopped, and looked - as soon as he stopped, the blue seemed to melt. Oookaay... he thought, heart pounding. He stated walking and whistling again. He went about ten steps, then looked behind, still walking. There! Blue eyes, in his shadow! Jack jumped and cried out, and the eyes disappeared once again. Jack realised he’d wandered off the path little, so he got back onto it, whistling all the way. Again, he walked about ten steps, but this time he turned around, so he was walking backwards with his shadow behind him. Jack’s heart nearly gave out. In his shadow were some creatures, at least five of them. They had glowing blue eyes, tiny rear goat-legs that looked almost like rabbit-legs. Each carried a little trident - and they were dancing to the tune he was whistling. He stopped, and bent down, still whistling his tune. The creatures stopped dancing and jumped back, but they stayed in his shadow. They cocked their heads at him, watching him curiously. Each had a wedge-shaped head, and one yawned - it had needle-sharp teeth, and several rows at that. They were all about 10 inches tall. Jack, squatting down, took a step forward. They jumped back again and somehow vanished into the darkness. Jack stopped whistling and stared for a few seconds. He shook his head, and stood up. He was about halfway, closer to the other end of the field, the one that went along a road. He heard a car go past, and the hedgerows lit up white and red. Jack started whistling and walked, a little faster this time. He was about three quarters across the field when curiosity overtook fear once more. He turned around to walk backwards. The creatures were there again, but this time... there were at least thirty. Jack stopped whistling and stared. The creatures stopped dancing, and stared at him. “Uh... he-hello there...” Jack trailed off. Their light-blue eyes, usually the colour of moonlight, had faded to blood red. Jack stared for a second, and then turned and ran. A car went past, he shouted out, then looked to the side. Out in the moonlight now, pacing him easily, were three of the creatures. He looked to the other side, they were there too. Jack shouted out to the car once again, which was slowing - then he tripped. He hit the ground hard, and slid a little way on the loose soil. His backpack went flying over his head. He felt little pinpricks on the backs of his legs, moving up his back. He looked behind him, to see the creatures moving up his back, sticking those tiny tridents in him as they went. His feet were now numb. He tried to get up, or drag himself away, or something but the sheer weight of their numbers was pinning him down - they were on his back now. He tried to shout out, but one landed heavily on his head - his nose was smashed into the dirt. He felt a pinprick on his head.... there was a great pain, and then the darkness spread. They dance in your footsteps To the tune that you play But don’t stop your playing Or you’ll be stolen away... The motorist got out of the car, and walked towards the style at the edge of the field. “Hello?” he called. “Did somebody shout?” No answer. “Heelllooo...” The motorist stopped to listen. He heard a squeak, in the hedgerow - nothing more. He shrugged, got into the car, and drove off. They stay in the shadows On the full moon’s night They’re faster than lightning But never stray to the light. The next morning, Harry was woken up by a mobile phone call. It was Jack’s home phone number. “Heeey, Jack! You missed a killer party here.” “This isn’t Jack, it’s his father. Is he with you?” “Uh, no, he’s not, Mr. Normandy...” Harry frowned at the rest of the group. “He left just after midnight.” “It’s just... Jack didn’t come home last night... he’s not answering his mobile. Could you look for him, for us?” “Uh, yeah, of course. Good bye...” Harry told the rest of the group what happened on the way back, on the same path Jack had walked. As they crossed the field, someone said “Hey, look at that!” Jack’s backpack was lying on the foot path. They ran over to it, and Harry turned it over. Nothing out of the ordinary was there. Harry ran to check the road, but Jack wasn’t lying in a hedgerow somewhere, there was no blood... He went back to the backpack, and noticed the stone under it was dark brown, almost the same colour as Jack’s hair. No, it was the same colour. Harry picked it up, and turned it over. There, looking natural on the rock, was a face, contorted in agony. Harry dropped it hurriedly, looking pale. The face... looked like Jack. The stone dropped with the face upwards, screaming at the blue sky overhead... Harry couldn’t take it. He ran. “Hey, wait up!” The other party goers followed. Where the stone had landed, it had disturbed the soil. There, hidden slightly, was a tiny trident. They dance in your footsteps To the tune you can’t cease Never stop your singing Or you belong to the Lufease... ((I might animate it if I get a tablet...)) |

I like it. Especially the poem. Very creepy stuff, reminds me of childrens stories meant to keep kids from wandering out at night. You should definitely animate it. Somehow I picture those weird little pitchfork guys in the forbidden fortress in Zelda: Windwaker. |

Kithas: Those Miniblins are pretty much what I based the Lufease off... but smaller. And eviller. Everyone else: I might be getting a tablet tomorrow... but it's doubtful. If I do, I'll start on this. |
