Modelling Challenge #1

So here it is. The first Brackenwood Modelling Challenge. Let's see how well this does. :)

The Rules:

:r: You may use whatever software you desire to model in.
:r: This first challenge will last until the end of November, so you have a week or so extra.
:r: Concept sketches are advised and encouraged. Get into a 3D mindset and draw your object from several angles to get a feel of how it pieces together. Feel free to post them in here for feedback.
:r: Final entries are submitted in the form of a final render and an unsmoothed wireframe. The wireframe will prevent cheating and the 'cleanliness' of the mesh will also be a factor when deciding the winner.
:r: You may post as many WIPs as you like in this thread, both renders and wireframes, in order to get help from your peers. This is encouraged. The whole point of these activities is to get better by giving and receiving help.
:r: Clearly state which is your final render when the contest is coming to a close. If you do not then it will be assumed that the last picture you posted before the deadline is your final submission.
:r: Texturing and lighting are not required. Feel free to light and texture your models but know that it will have no bearing on the winning entry. Judging is based on modelling skills alone.
:r: You may enter as many times as you like.

Prizes:
The prizes, courtesy of Vector (thanks again :)) are as follows:

When you win one, wear it with pride. ;)

The Door.

That's right. You read that correctly. This month's challenge is The Door. Don't worry, this isn't as boring as it sounds.

I'm encouraging you to push your imagination. Take the challenge and run with it. Think of some doors. Some are tall, some are wide. Some are made of wood. Some have windows. Some have locks. Etc etc.

Then push you imagination even further. Think about science fiction and fantasy. Blast doors, airlocks, dungeon doors, trapdoors, secret doors, portals. Play around and add as much detail as possible. Think of the door itself as the focal point and then work the decoration around it. A portcullis might be set in a wall of roughly hewn stone with strong chains on which to torture prisoners whereas the doors of a hanger bay on a space station may have fuel tanks, control panels and pipework surrounding it.

Here are a few examples:

Posted Image

Archways and mechanical doors are mixed here for a neo-classical feel.

Posted Image

The door's mechanics are designed so that it could work, in theory (and can be animated.)

Posted Image

A quick fantasy style door I rendered out. Contrast it with the science fiction doors above.

Probably the most famous 'door' of all. The Stargate.

Good luck and be sure to ask if you have any questions. Enjoy!

Thanks Nurbsey :)

No extra points will be given for animation I'm afraid. However, form and function should go hand in hand. A door that could never feasibly open, for example, would have less chance of winning than a door that could. In the simplest instance this could just mean adding a few hinges to the side and making sure there are no obstacles in the doors way which mean it couldn't open properly. However it could be as complex as a full gear system with levers and pulleys and buttons. Especially buttons. :D

If you want to animate it though, please do. I'd love to see it. :)

Yeah what he said. I'm going to join this with the second thing I've ever 3D modelated. I have only 10 days left on my free trial :(

I can see where this is going vector, and it's looking great already. Good Job! Though the right side looks very flat.

@ Caveking 3D studio max. :) Use the skylight to get the awesome grainy slightly-realisticly texturised look.

Sorry about the tiny resolution but that alone took 1:20 to render :P

My PC wasn't made for 3D :(

Looking really good so far guys. :)

Are either of you using reference material to model from?

Vector: The skylight takes a LONG time to render compared to the Max's default renderer. My 640 x 480 can take anywhere from 4 to 10 minutes for a single frame. More on larger objects. It's worth it though, in my opinion. :)
I wouldn't mind seeing a bigger render, skylit or not. You've got crazy amounts of detail on there and I want to be able to see it all. ^_^

What's this brown stuff on my nose? ;)

<edit>

I'm not using a reference material, but I did do some concept sketches at school today. I'd upload but I don't have a camera (or rather batteries for a camera) at the moment.

That looks very cool ^_^
I can't think of anything to change in terms of geometry, it looks pretty sound to me.
I like your subtle use of internal extrusions (intrusions?) on the side panel bits around the edges, looks awesome... unless that's just anti-aliasing.. :P Good work :)
Does it open?

Done some more on mine...
