Effects Exercise #2 Welcome to the second special effects exercise. This exercise may be bumped, deleted, or extended to fall in line with Novembers Monthly Comp when announced. Until that point however... enjoy.... Smoke on the water, Fire in the sky! The core of this exercise is inspired by a scene in Adams newest release "LittleFoot". In the scene directly preceeding the apperance of the Yu-Yu's Adam created some of the nicest looking fog effects I have seen to date. Part one of this exercise (Smoke on the Water), is to create your own fog effect. You should include a foreground as well as a background element of your choosing to demonstrate the idea that your fog has some "thickness" to it. Part two of the exercise (Fire in the Sky), is to add a single lightning bolt to your scene. How you do it is up to you, but keep in mind that the end result should be as realistic as possible. This entire exercise is based around the concepts of light and shadow. How will your fog react when the lightning strikes? Because this is a fairly indepth exercise the due date for all finished entries will be Dec. 15th at 12:00 AM MST. You are encouraged to post up your WIP's in this thread for feedback and crits as you work. Please keep the following rules in mind: All entries can be animated with whatever program you choose to use, however final entries must be submitted as .swf. Screen size is to be set at 500 pixels wide by 300 pixels high. Animations MUST include a foreground and a background element. Final entries must be posted to this thread no later then the above posted due date to be eligible.Judging will be based upon the best use of effects in order to create the scene as closely as described. Good luck to you all! ![]() The Prizes Level 1 - The Effects Master Level 2 - The Effects Guru Level 3 - The Effects God |

Surely you mean Dec. 15th? Otherwise that's only a few days... This comp sounds quite complex, need to give the approach some thought. |

Well... I've got the smoke on the water.... (If you don't have a decent average computer, don't try it, it'll probably chug you to death) I guess I just need to do the fire in the sky now.

Here's a whacky site for lightning reference if anybody wants to take a squiz: http://www.lightningphotography.com/ It's got some pretty kick-ass photos there <edit> updaterated: http://photobucket.com/albums/v661/Vector8...nt=1620b1c6.swf Now it looks like it's on water. Working on lightning now...

Nice effect Vector
Maybe make the front line of fog a little less solid, but more of it, when a whole of fog comes round... well it looks weird

There's actually 30 levels of fog in thar, So I assume you mean the first few.
I can see what you mean, but I think I like it with gaps.... fog isn't always connected everywhere

Thing is, from time to time a few layers space out at the same time, and you can see pretty far before reaching the behind layers of fog... I've never seen that happen where I live
Fog is pretty much constant, with onl a little variation. On top of that, maybe make the circles less opaque but more of them, the circle gradients can too easily be defined. Once again though, great work in small filesize When's the lightning coming?

Thing is, opacity doesn't work too well with the blur... and the larger the blur the more processing power it will take.... and it's chugging pretty hard now so I better'nt
Ps... working on lightning now anyways... not aiming for realism... aiming for the thing that looks best on the camera from my point of view

ActionScript 2 = AS2
http://photobucket.com/albums/v661/Vector8...nt=a66a4bb2.swf Now with lightning. I think I bought the framerate down to 18 so it didn't eat computers, but I can't remember now.
