Love to animate but just arent good enough to enter the Forum Comps?
Want to animate, but dont know where to start?

Well then you are in the right spot! Posted Image

Almost every classically trained animator has their share of horror stories about our 'lil friend the infamous flour sack. For many years he has been used to teach the basics of the 12 principles of animation, and now he has arrived here in Brackenwood for your learning pleasure!

The Flour Sack Thread is NOT a contest. No winners will be announced, and no banners awarded. This thread is here to help teach you the basics of animation only. There will be no strict deadlines for you to post your work, Do it at your own pace, in your own time. Newbies can start here at thread #1 for the basics and move on when new exercises are posted. (Which should be every few weeks-ish).

Exercise #1 Character Model Sheets.

For the very first exercise we need to get our sack set up as a usable character for animation. This of course means we need a character sheet.
Character sheets are a visual "synopsis" of what your character looks like, most often they will include a front, side, 3/4, and rear view of the character in a standing position.
I would highly reccomend refreshing your memories of character sheets from Daves KickAss Illustrator Comp here: http://s7.invisionfree.com/Brackenwood/ind...?showtopic=3739
As well, there are many examples of character sheets available in the Animation Resources section of the Forum, or at my site http://www.eyeeffex.com.

So break out the pencils, or your trusty computer and begin sketching up your very own "flour sack"! Keep it pretty basic for now, just the sack itself. As the thread progresses we will be adding more features to our 'lil sacks. For now however, the less detail the sacks have the better... after all, we will be animating these suckers shortly! Posted Image

So there you have it... your first Flour Sack assignment. I will be following along with you all through these exercises, and when we have enough character sheets posted we will move on to the basics of animation!

Enjoy the ride, and thanks for taking it with me! Posted Image

Nice action sheet Peve. Two things stand out though....
#1) The sack is wayyy too detailed right now. When we move into the animating of the sacks you are going to have alot of extra work having to add the level of detail you have going now. Posted Image
#2)Your primary character sheet should basically consist of four poses. A full frontal view, a side view, a 3/4 view, and a full rear view.

A fantastic example of a great primary model sheet can be seen here:

(Courtesy of our very own Humble!)

Otherwise you have created a terrific supporting action sheet, nicely I might add! Posted Image

I forgot the back pose. Oopth.

Rubberhead: yours looks so squishy! It's great!
Comlock: really nice twists in some of those poses.
Peve: detailed, but there's great use of weight in him.

It would be good if people could post character sheets of their OWN characters, and go through the exercises using characters of their own...?

i'd say the thought is to keep it easy in order to learn the basics…and the character sheets are for getting familiar with the shape of the sack…

Good practice before I start my animation project. I found the challenge in this pillow now, it is hard to show emotion, so you have to use body language. Oh yea, 1 question, when is the next assignment going to be up?

EDIT!:
Made a half step thinging to get the feel for him.
