Once again I'm loving every word of it!

When they became clearer and refused to go the wolf jumped up, a full throated snarl rumbled from her and only then did the chant that the wolf knew was dangerous, fade.

Maybe you needn't have had to repeat that the chanting was dangerous?

Thats all I've got to say, keep up the good work ;)

:D Thanks medved, the pat was much appreciated.

And Foster, yup, I think I'll be making some more defined breaks, the only reason I hadn't already was because I though they'd be too many breaks and it'd get annoying, but I'll see how it goes. Thanks for the input. :D

Hey, welcome to Brackenwood in writing Jdave! It would be just to brilliant if Mr. Brackenwood himself read this. So everyone, publicise! And I wouldn't mind seeing this attempted in Flash or some art, unfortunately I'm uselss in both mediums, so if anyone one wants to take a stab at it, please let me know, I'd love to see it. :D

Turnip05! Glad you like it again, and yes, I did kinda flog the Yu-Yu's being dangerous... ah well, you still liked it and that's good enough for me. :D

Thanks guys for takin' the time to read, the next bit'll move the plot along and we'll see alot more of the Yu-Yu's... *lightning flash, thunder rumble, dogs howl, ominous music plays* ...ahem, yes, anyway, so stay tuned! :D

Well crud on a stick! <_< I need someone to post so I can without double posting... :yfok:

LOL! Thanks cheetozrgood! Glad you like it.

For those who haven’t learnt the Sarus language yet, this is obviously translated for easy reading. And these next couple of parts will be slightly different from the others, it’s less plot and more an exploration on why the characters (Bitey in particular) are the way they are.

Part 10

The Yu-Yu’s, the shadow people of Brackenwood faded resentfully from the world of light into their own dark realm.

The she-wolf was going to be a problem.

One of the leader Yu-Yu’s turned and snapped to another, his eyes flashing angrily, re-enforcing his words;

This is your fault, you were meant to steal the hunter human, not the wolf you imbecilic moron.

The offending shadow shrank and wheedled his excuse,

The human wasn’t in the right state to be taken, the she-wolf was the one in the Twilight Realm.

The Twilight Realm was what the Yu-Yu’s had named that grey place between the waking world and the world of Dreams, the place where they had been most powerful, until recently…

Don’t give me that for a petty excuse! You know very well that our power is growing, not only did you bungle out plans, and expend precious energy, but you’ve given the Brackenwooders an entirely new guardian. You know the wolf song can repel us. The human was what we needed, it is they who have the power to enslave nature and destroy it!

The smaller Yu-Yu grovelled to his superior, only the fewest of the leading Yu-Yu’s had the power to destroy other shadows, but destroy they did when they became too angry. It was a fate all that did not possess the power themselves had come to fear.

Although the Yu-Yu’s were all greedy enough to want to take power, the lower subordinates begrudged their leaders for reaping the benefits that they were putting effort and energy into. More and more of them were wondering if so much power to so few was such a good idea. But none of them spoke up now, they had gone to far already and their leaders could destroy whom they would. There was no stopping now, no turning back. They had passed the point of no return…

The she-wolf must be destroyed. Before she knows the power of her song…

The lower Yu-Yu’s shuddered. The wolf had angered their leaders, and they were growing more and more in power. She should be very afraid…

XX Back in Brackenwood XX

Steffany finally fell asleep and dawn found the mismatched trio still in the globe tree, though the musical storm had subsided. The wolf lay twisted, her lower body rotated so that her stomach was bared. Fatsack curled up next to her jaw, encompassed by one large forepaw. Bitey lay, snuggled up to the she-wolf’s side his head rising and falling as the wolf breathed and her other forepaw draped across him. Warm, comfortable and safe.

The wolf woke up first, she lifted her head and yawned hugely before shaking her muzzle. She checked up on her two charges and found them both still sleeping. She shifted slightly and felt a sharp tug near her belly as she did so. The half-goat had a handful of her fur clenched in his fist as he slept. He was scared of something and Steffany whined quietly as she wondered what it was. Had he lost his pack too? She wondered, his family? Maybe that was why he was so down-right malignant. He didn’t know any better. Yes, well, he would have to learn now. He had a stern new teacher that was going to teach him some manners.

But gently. The wolf decided, he was no wolf cub so she’d have to be patient with him, and gentle when she had to check him. The she-wolf stroked his fur with one paw.

We are both alone, you and I.

Slowly she got up, easing out from under him. She was hungry and she needed to hunt, maybe not something as big as the whizzer animals, but something. She crawled out of the tree and into fresh air and watery sunlight. The wolf shook herself and scented the air. The world smelled clean and fresh after the storm and the she-wolf could smell the wet trees and the dew on the grass. She took a deep breath and released it slowly, feeling vibrantly alive and free. Her tail tremored with the desire to run with the pack and sing the wolf song and hunt game. But there was no pack and no one to sing with, but there was game to hunt, prey to kill and eat so the wolf set off at a lope, carefully remembering the scents that marked the route back to the young ones in the tree.

XX A little time later in the globe tree XX

Bitey came too slowly, he couldn’t remember feeling so happy as he did now. He went to rub his face in the furry hide of the hunter but found no fur there. He awoke fully with a jerk and looked around quickly. The mothering animal was gone, but her warmth and scent lingered where she’d lain. Bitey felt a stab of panic, but also of resentment and sadness. She’d left him. The first creature that he’d actually liked had gone and left him, just like his parents had left him. The bitterness increased and Bitey turned his devious attention onto the peacefully sleeping fatsack…

XX Meanwhile, outside XX

Steffany heard the farting squeal as she was returning from her hunt, a small, animal that she didn’t recognise but smelt good and tasted nice dangling from her jaws. The wolf broke from a trot to a flat out run, racing towards the tree. She dived at the tree roots and scrabbled up into it. She found the goat-man bouncing the little yellow farting bag on the walls of the hollow circle clasped in the tree.

With a whining growl Steffany dropped her kill and pounced at the half-goat, hitting him hard in the chest, bowling him over.

XX

Bitey heard a familiar snarl and turned quickly, just in time to see the furry mother creature pounce on him. He was rolled over and over and ended up on his back. Two large forepaws on his chest, pinning him down. The hunter growled at him admonitorily. Bitey let out a bark and grabbed at the fur on her shoulders and pulled.

XX

The she-wolf stopped growling in surprise as the goat-man grabbed the thick fur on her shoulders and pulled sharply. The joints in her forelegs buckled and she crashed down on top of him. She felt the goat creature wrap his arms around her shoulders and squeeze tight in a huge hug. The wolf made a sound of surprise and confusion as he nuzzled into her fur, making small whimpers. Finally she overcame her surprise and wiggled out of his grip and stood over him.

XX

Bitey rubbed his face into the furry hunter’s pelt. He would have believed that he could be so bothered whether one animal was there or not, but now he found himself desperate for this mothering creature to stay. To be left again by something that had showed him kindness hurt him, deep down. He didn’t want to be alone again. The animal wiggled off him and stood by him, she made a questioning sound then sat down beside him and nuzzled his face, in her own way, asking him why he needed to hurt fatsack and what was wrong with him.

XX

The she-wolf licked the goat-human’s face in questioning, instead of making a sound of disgust and moving away he moved closer, wrapping his arms around the wolf’s neck and burying his face into her fur. Steffany put a paw around his back and licked his neck and shoulder comfortingly. There was a sloshing sound and the bruised yellow fat bag looked up at her and then scrabbled under her stomach.

The wolf looked from one of the creatures under her care to the other. What was the matter with them? She whined and nudged the goat-man and then pawed at the yellow fat creature. Something was very wrong, especially with the bigger one. The wolf whined and rubbed her cheek against the half-goat’s.

Something’s wrong with you. You’re hurting…but where? And what hurts?

Steffany knew something was wrong with the half-goat, she didn’t know what, but she intended to find out. She gently disentangled herself from the huddle of her two charges and retrieved the kill, she ripped a bit off and placed the rest in front of the half-goat and prodded it with her muzzle. He ate while Steffany shredded the part of the kill she’d saved for her smaller charge and watched him eat, sucking the small strips of meat through it’s trunk and farting happily while she held the fat creature between her paws and licked him.

XX

When Bitey finished his part of the kill, the she-beast moved onto to him and began licking his face. He tried to wiggle away but she pinned him down with her forepaws. After a minute he stopped fighting and just let her clean him. He didn’t like to admit it, but the sensation was kind of nice…he felt soothed and made a quiet, almost purring sound.

Yes I know this is out of character for Bitey but it you go to this link, and then the Inhabitants, look up Bitey, you can see where I got the idea from.

Thanks Jdave, I try to keep Mr Philips style, it’s what makes Brackenwood so enjoyable after all.

medved…erm… …no…not many of them are finished…I need inspiration to write and my old reviewers on the other sites are either unable to get on the internet a lot, or have seemed to have lost interest…but feel free to go and check them out, I will get them finished…eventually… <_<

Hiya Turnip05, yeh, I guess Bitey is a bit mixed up, but I think he’s kind of a mixed up person at the moment. Thanks for the comments. :D

Thanks Rick1! :D Good to know I’ve got your interest and comment again if you keep reading. :D

Part 11

The she-wolf needed to see Auld Sage, maybe he could tell her what hurt her half-goat. She knew that the yellow sack of fat would be perfectly cheerful if the half-goat just didn’t beat it to a pulp. Maybe it was best for her smaller friend to go back to it’s old life. Although the yellow sloshing creature didn’t seem to agree…

As Steffany slid like a serpent out among the tree roots both the half-goat and the farting animal followed. When she realised that the yellow creature was going to come anyway, she picked him up in gentle jaws and growled softly for the half-goat half-human to follow and began moving through the trees of Brackenwood. The wolf moved like a wraith through the darkness and patches of light that broke through the trees, the light glittered on the silver hairs of her back and made the dark hairs look even blacker. The creature in her mouth farted happily as it sucked up gnats as the wolf moved along, following only her instinct.

Steffany finally broke the trees and into a covered glade. Trees closed off the sky, except for a small patch straight overhead. There was a short, gentle slope leading down to a lake that disappeared into the trees. And in the water, was the tall figure of Auld Sage. The she-wolf put down the yellow creature and growled a greeting. Auld Sage looked up,

“Hello Steffany.” He answered. The wolf trotted down the slope, the sloshing bag bouncing after her. “I see you found fatsack.” Steffany cocked her head but the yellow water-balloon bird bounced and farted. The wolf looked at the yellow animal. So that was fatsack was it? She had the impression that ‘fatsack’ was it kind name, like wolf, as well as a name by itself. “And I see you’ve found Bitey as well. Or did he find you I wonder?” the wolf cocked her head and turned it, looking behind, the half-goat was coming down the hill. She turned back to Auld Sage,

Bitey?

“That is Bitey.” There was a pause as Auld Sage looked at Bitey. “I think she will do you good.” He remarked, to Bitey this time. Bitey trotted up to stand by the she-wolf and fatsack. “Bitey, this is Steffany, a she-wolf. And she’s far from home, she doesn’t understand our world. You have to show her.” Bitey cocked his head to one side. And then he opened his mouth and spoke;

“Seffanee?” Auld Sage chuckled,

“Close enough.” Bitey looked down at ‘Seffanee’, he sat down beside her and gazed into her golden wolf eyes. He brushed her shoulder and neck with his fingers.

“Seffanee.” The wolf pushed her nose forward and took a deep breath of his smell.

Bitey…what’s hurting you?

She licked his cheek. She liked his name for her.

Seffanee.

Her name.

XX A little while later XX

Seffanee, Bitey and fatsack stayed by the lake and relaxed. Fatsack ate bugs while the wolf licked her paws and Bitey curled up against the she-wolf and dozed. Soon he was fast asleep, soft snores warming the skin of the wolf’s side.

“Steffany.” The wolf looked up, Auld Sage was looking at her. “He was separated from his family, his pack, when he was barely what you would see as a newborn cub. In a musical storm, he was split up from them. That is why he is the way he is. He hates the storms, they bring back memories. And you, you have shown him something he has felt for a very long time.” The wolf looked down at Bitey, she licked his head and growled comfortingly.

I won’t leave him. I’ll stay with him.

“Protect him from the shadow people.” The wolf looked up sharply, “They will steal him if you don’t. But you have a power inside you, to repel them.” Seffanee tilted her head at him but Auld Sage didn’t elaborate. He walked out of the lake and disappeared into the woods. Seffanee watched after him, eyes wide. She looked down at Bitey and then back up to the darkness under the trees.

The she-wolf relaxed her ears back and closed her eyes, relaxing but alert. But eventually she drifted off to sleep.

She was woken by a fart from fatsack. She opened her eyes and looked at him. Fatsack farted and reached up to touch his trunk to the wolf’s nose.

Seffanee knew a farewell when she saw one. She rubbed noses with fatsack and watched him as he bounced away and disappeared, after Auld Sage, into the woods. Leaving the wolf and Bitey alone.

YaY love the story youve added something to Mr. Phillips world, Bitey talking, only natural for him to have some sort of communication with other creatures besides physical communication, Auld Sage well we know he can talk, he tryed to talk to Bitey once before. Well its also, IMO, cute how you had Bitey say Steffany, Seffanee. I really like how you've given Bitey a sort of parent figure. Again very good on all :bitey: :fpbls: :sage:

LOL guys! Wow, you really make my day. :D

Turnip05, LoL! I thought it would be kinda funny if Bitey couldn't actually Steffany properly, I mean, we've never heard him talk, so it seemed to fit. :D

Hey medved, look forward to see yer on the other stories. Just to warn you though, the Oddworld one is completely fluffy and sickening sweet and all things cute and cuddly... <_<

I know Rick1, I know :worry: I keep finding mistakes as well, <_< it's all very annoying actually...

LoL Jdave, I thought it would be Bitey's style not to be able to say Steffany properly, it's not really the easiest word to say when you don't know how. :D And I think Bitey needs someone to keep him in check.

And LOL munch! Nice to hear from you. :D

Hey, just noticed this thread and read it all in one gulp. Good stuff!

There are little things I would change, such as using "too" for "to", and there are some scenes where the point of view shifts so many times it makes me a bit dizzy, but those are just small details compared to the overall goodness of the story!

I especially like your use of imagery, and how well you express things as the wolf might see them (sure, there were a few bobbles in that area, but overall you've done well!) You also do a good job of weaving in the details of Brackenwood and the existing cartoons.

Keep up the good work, and I hope to see more soon!

(When I get time I'll look at more people's stories; I've already seen one from Shrike and one from Ignia, both of which have a lot of potential. Sooner or later I'll post some of my own stuff, too.)

Lol medved, unfortunately, the Oddworld is a different style and that’s where it’s stayin’. :D Thanks for reading it though. :D
Jdave, the good stuff keeps on rollin’ dude! Thanks for comments. :D
LOL! That’s ok Rick1, nice to know you like it so much, this part doesn’t have a lot of plot but it’ll be picking up very soon. I’m looking forward to having Seffanee to seeing ‘Prowlies at the River’, excuse me while I cackle madly…MWAHAHAHAHA-cough, choke, hake-HAHAHAHAHAHA…well you get the idea…:D
Hey hey swartzer! Thanks for the insightful review. It was very helpful and I’m so pleased you liked it. More coming soon. :D

Part 12

A few days had passed and Seffanee and Bitey were still getting to know each other, and the she-wolf had begun teaching Bitey some pack manners. At first she’d had to check him at every turn but with each day he was getting better. And she-wolf was learning too, discipline wasn’t always the best way to deal with a mistake, she had to be gentle and understanding, she couldn’t communicate with Bitey like she would with wolf-cubs and sometimes all he needed was some sort of affection. Bitey had yet to gloss over his maliciousness that kept cropping up every now and again. But he was getting there.

They were deep in the dark Brackenwood forests now, Seffanee was trying to teach Bitey how to hunt and it was proving to be difficult. He got bored easily and wasn’t very quiet and he didn’t seem to understand the need to hunt in the first place. The she-wolf was steadily losing patience, but she was a stubborn creature and refused to give it up and let it drop.

She sniffed at the forest floor, covered in fallen leaves. A whole network of smells pervaded her nose and she instinctively sorted through them; mud, leaves, small creature, insects, bio-litter and the pungent smell of rotting. There was something else as well. The tracks of an animal that looked like deer slots. The whizzer animals. The she-wolf immediately became alert, all her muscles became tense and quivered, her ears pricked up and her tail went stiff and straight. She let out a quiet growl and crept forward, a bored and irritable Bitey following.

The she-wolf cleared the trees and found herself overlooking a great prairie. Long, lush grass stretched for miles and the wolf could only see a sliver of the forest on the other side. For a moment all thoughts of the hunt and prey were forgotten. Seffanee let loose a great whining howl of longing and gave a great leap, bounding into the open. Miles and miles of open, unhindered sky soared above her like a blue bowl and the green grassland was spread out like a huge rug.

Bitey watched the wolf capering about like a puppy with a look of disgust. How very undignified. But as he watched Bitey couldn’t help feeling that the wolf looked like she was having fun. Bitey felt half resentment that Seffanee was enjoying herself and half longing to join in her play. Finally, as a compromise he stalked out after her. Thinking to give her a scare no doubt Bitey crept up behind the wolf rolling in the grass and took a deep breath to yell.

But the she-wolf had other ideas. She smelt him coming and rolling onto her belly once more, she pounced on him and they rolled over and over down the slope. Eventually they came to a stop and Seffanee sprang off him and crouched playfully, tail waving.

Bitey lay of his back, somewhat dazed. A gentle paw suddenly patted his hoof and Bitey propped himself up on his elbows. The she-wolf hopped from side to side, then dropped onto her chest, her tongue lolling, tail wagging. She reached out and patted his hoof again before jumping back teasingly. She rolled onto her back and waved her paws at him. Bitey got up slowly, the she-wolf rolled onto her belly again and waved her tail.

Play with me.

Bitey crouched slightly and for a moment they stared at each other, then suddenly, Bitey leapt at her but Seffanee dodged to one side and took off across the grass. He was soon in hot pursuit and easily caught her. Soon they were rolling again, scuffling all the way.

Finally they both flopped onto the grass, utterly exhausted. Seffanee lay on her back, enjoying the sun on her stomach. Her eyes closed slightly and she was just falling asleep when she heard it, the chant she’d learnt to fear…

Yu-yu yu-yu yu-yu yu-yu yu-yu yu-yu…

The she-wolf leapt up with a furious snarl. A cold breeze whisked past her ears as she stood, shaking with a mix of fear and rage. The wolf sniffed the air, rain was on the way. She turned quickly and nudged Bitey, who was also on the verge of sleep, hard in the ribs.

Wake up.

Bitey opened one eye and grunted at the wolf before closing it again. The wolf growled and prodded him again. Bitey growled back and swiped at her muzzle. Seffanee dodged the swipe and with a snarl she bit Bitey painfully on the shoulder. Bitey yelped and scrambled to his feet. Seffanee growled at him. warning him not to argue. Bitey whined pathetically. The wolf let out a snort.

It is your own fault. You should have gotten up in the first place.

But she licked his shoulder regardless and looking around warily she led the way back into the trees. Maybe so much open space was not entirely a good thing.

After a while the wolf’s ears picked up a faint pattering, like water of fallen leaves and a moment later a raindrop splashed onto her muzzle. The wolf sneezed and shook her head furiously. She needn’t have bothered, where there was one raindrop, there were others and soon the rain was coming down thick and fast. It didn’t take long for the wolf and Bitey to be completely soaked. Seffanee growled in annoyance, the growl quickly became a whine as the water soaked through her fur. She shook her herself miserably.

Bitey wasn’t much better off, he made a sound of indignance as the she-wolf shook herself and hit him with more water. He wondered if the she-wolf even knew where she was going. He doubted it. Bitey suddenly remembered what Auld Sage had said. About Seffanee not knowing about Brackenwood. He decided it was high time he took the lead. The wolf may have made herself his pseudo-parent but she didn’t know everything. There was only one thing Bitey could think of to do. He’d have to take her home.

He looked over at the she-wolf, her ears were held low and the rain slicked down her fur. She shivered miserably. Bitey grunted to get her attention;

“Seffanee.” The wolf looked at him. Bitey beckoned and took the lead weaving quickly through the trees as the rain hammered down from the dark sky. The wolf blew water from her nose and trustingly followed him. It didn’t take long for them to reach Bitey’s tree home in its glade.

Seffanee followed him to the entrance at its base, wiggling under the roots. Grateful to be out of the wind and rain the she-wolf growled softly and shook herself, feeling warmer at once. Bitey made a ‘pffffft’ sound and climbed up to the second level of the tree and proceeded to go to sleep.

The wolf yawned hugely and lay down, her tail over her muzzle. She went to sleep.
