Daw, thanks everyone. More story comin’ right up! And lol Ramel, it may only be 20 paragraphs long, but that’s 50 pages altogether in my Word doc.

P.S. Anyone know where Turnip went?

Part 20

Bitey was dreaming again.

He was back in the pasture where the littleFoot had hit him with the rock and knocked him unconscious, propped up against the large boulder the adult had thrown first. His position was awkward and painful and though he hurt, and he knew he had to wake from this place between true sleep and full wakefulness, he couldn’t. No matter how hard he tried.

It was exactly as it had been when it had happened, except for one thing. He was alone…Seffanee was not there watching over him, and there was no one to drive back the shadows when they came…

Yu-yu yu-yu yu-yu yu-yu yu-yu yu-yu…

He felt fear wash over him, prickling his gut and making all his hair rise as he suddenly felt unexplainable cold. The drop in temperature jolted him from his drifting half-conscious state and he jumped up. Inky blackness swirled around him like a forming tornado, blacker then pitch and as thick as shadows. The dark mists circled him and closed in on him, he threw up his arms as the wind caused by the spinning shadows snagged and tugged at him, the world seemed to become dark, the colours bleeding out, leaning onto black and grey. The lush landscape of Brackenwood was replaced by a stark, ugly place that made Bitey shiver. He looked up quickly to see the Brackenwood sky, filled with stars and moon, rapidly shrinking as if he was moving away from them at speed.

Without a thought Bitey kicked upwards, jumping as high as he could, clearing the black mists and leaving that forbidding dark place behind as he was thrust back into the world he knew. Bitey took no time to savour what he had almost lost, the shadows came at him again and he fled.

Using his great speed and dexterity to escape the harrying blackness, he darted and dodged the mists as they tried to capture him, skidding to a halt so they shot passed him, sharply changing direction, doing everything to get away from the darkness, and he never stopped running. He flew across Brackenwood, almost getting caught once, when inadvertently he swallowed a firefly and slowed as he choked. The shadows fell upon him, grabbing at his arms, but he wrenched them away and ran again.

He sped through one of Brackenwood’s many, sprawling forests’, jumping high to clear the trees and look behind him as the tree tops flashed passed below him.

Nothing.

He skidded to a halt when the trees ending, thinking he had lost the shadows that hunted him. He hadn’t. However impossible it seemed, it appeared in front of him, a great swirling mass of nightmarish dark.

No running then. There was no where to run.

Bitey shot forward, barrelling towards the shadow, locking his arms before his face as he flung himself through the dark. But instead of consuming him as he had expected, the shadow, split. He did it again, and again, charging and renting the shadow into pieces, until it came apart completely. Bitey paused for a moment as that great dark mass became many, small black figures, tiny, like faeries. He went in among them, stamping them into the grass. Until there was nothing left.

Bitey looked around him, he was alone. But he felt no more fear.

And then he heard a terrible shriek of panic.

  Storygasm? That scares me…no really, it does…but thanks ColdHart…I think… :D

Part 21

She was running, always running. Heart pounding, breath sobbing, her head full of nothing but terror and the instinct to flee. She sprang out of the way just in time as a huge paw smashed down on where her back had been.

In desperation the she-wolf darted from side to side, flashing through the trees. But not matter how fast she ran, how hard she tried to stay ahead, there was no reprieve, the Bear kept coming, always just behind, always there. Seffanee planted her paws on the trunk of one tree and used it to change direction, jumping out of the way as the Bear crashed through. A half sobbing howl came from her throat, the Bear didn’t even flinch but roared and charged at her.

She shot out of the trees, into one of the wide open places. She did not even slow to check if it was safe as she would normally have done, her mind was too consumed with terror. She crashed through streams and was unheeding of the squealing sounds of the herd of Wizzals they came upon, her mind not even registering them as she fled right through the herd. The yellow herbivores scattered in all directions, whizzing and screeching in fear of the Bear, not the wolf as it lumbered after her.

The earth suddenly dropped out from under her and the she-wolf was pitched down a sharp, tall embankment, rolling over and over with no control. The strong smell of earth and dead bracken, of young shoots and a shock of cold water as she hit the bottom of the slope. Seffanee scrambled to get up, but the stream’s bottom was slick and she hit herself hard on the chin as her paws went everywhere as she slammed down, unable to remain upright. Coloured dots exploded into her vision as the dizzying blow to her chin stunned her.

She heard the Bear crashing down the slope, but she couldn’t move, sprawled out in the shallow stream, shivering, cold, wet and afraid.

The Bear sensing that its prey had given up, lumbered closer to the prone she-wolf. It reared when it came near to her, rising on hind legs and towering above her. It roared and the she-wolf shivered.

XX Elsewhere in Brackenwood XX

Bitey was also running. After that shriek of terror had woken him he had found that all his fear was gone. Though yes, there were still bad things lurking in the dark, things that hunted and wanted to hurt and kill, he was no longer afraid of them. He had Seffanee, his friend, his protector, and now she was in danger. He hadn’t needed to recognise the scream as his wolf friend, something deep inside him told him that it was Seffanee, and that she needed his help.

So he ran, the fastest thing in Brackenwood, away from his tree home, towards the sound of his friend. Tree whipped past him and grassy plains flew beneath his hooves, over rivers and across each dip and rise in the landscape.

Bitey skidded to a halt when he found the wolf, and the huge, dark Bear that was attacking her. For a moment, Bitey could only stare at the monstrous creature as it reared over the fallen wolf and with one swipe of a huge, claw-ringed paw, it flung the already battered wolf through the air. She came down with a crunch and a small, pitiful sound of pain crawled from her. The Bear lumbered toward the stricken wolf and again hit the her with an almighty thwack one of huge paw, the wolf was thrown again, hitting the grass hard and rolling over on her side before she came to a stop.

It was then that Bitey moved, just as he had done to that shadow in his dreams, he charged at the Bear, flinging himself straight at it. And just as the shadow had, he went right through it and it split.

The Bear roared and turned its attack on Bitey, swinging at him with huge paws. Bitey avoided the blows and repeatedly flung himself at the Bear, over and over until it was reduced to some many scraps of mist on the wind. The Bear roared again but began to fade, its smouldering eyes the last thing to wink out of existence.

Bitey didn’t watch the Bear fade, he scurried over to Seffanee and stopped short when he saw her properly. She was bloody and beaten and battered and bruised. One leg was bent at an entirely wrong angle and by the way she panted, her breathing laboured, and the crushed look of her side, ribs were obviously broken, one of her lungs may even have been punctured. Bitey made a soft moan and dropped down beside her.

“Seffanee…”

The wolf slowly opened her eyes, the effort of breathing sapped her energy, but she managed to make a soft, reassuring sound. Bitey whimpered, the she-wolf couldn’t die, she couldn’t leave him, he knew he’d go back to the way he used to be, down right malicious, if she died. He whimpered again and reached out a hand to gently touch her shoulder. She made that low whuffling sound again, like he was a young cub, and then her eyes closed and didn’t reopen.

Bitey tipped his head back, and screamed.

:D Yes, this is meant to be short.

Part 22

There was just the sound of her own breathing, the sound of air rushing into her lungs, and then leaving as she exhaled. Dimly she remembered that this was how she had first entered Brackenwood. After the pain of the human death stick, and the river. These had been her first memories of Brackenwood. The sound of her own breathing.

Slowly, dreamily, the haziness cleared and other memories floated in front of her. Bright, technicolour bubbles of shifting light. She reached out for the nearest one, and when she touched it, the bubble burst and filled the world, enveloping her as the memory played out.

It was herself, and Bitey. They were in a great lush meadow, the sun was shining and the sky was a clear, vibrant blue. She watched her grey self, spring away from Bitey, mouth open, tongue out, her hindquarters up and her chest pressed to the grass. Her tail was wagging in playful challenge. Bitey dived on her and they rolled over and over together in the grass.

When the pair of them halted, the she-wolf was on her back, legs in the air, and Bitey snuggled up to her warm fur and let out a sigh.

It was peaceful.

The memory faded.

Part 23

She was dimly aware of a little voice, whispering by her ear, sounding like the wind brushing dry leaves and making them rub together. She felt hot little hands touch her ribs and she winced and uttered a small cry. The little hands drew back and the whispering intensified. She cried again when another little hand touched her injured leg.

More whispers.

Then, a wonderful bliss washed over the wolf’s mind bringing with it a delicious warmth and numbness. Everything around her was a warm buttercup yellow, she felt safe and watched over. She felt like a cub again, pressed up against her white mother’s warm belly, just after she’d suckled.

She was content.

Bitey…

The yellow warmth began to fade away as he came to her mind.

Bitey!

She couldn’t stay, even as much as she wanted too, she couldn’t, Bitey needed her. The she-wolf struggled out of the yellow warmth. The voices were back, but…the pain was gone… She took in a deep breath but her ribs no longer hurt. Her legs twitched, but they didn’t hurt either. Actually, she felt pretty good…

One eye snapped open and the she-wolf lifted her head quickly. Around her were little figures, like little pale yellow flames. Seffanee made a sharp sound of surprise, they were the little creatures she’d encountered when she’d first arrived in Brackenwood. Immediately the creatures began fluttering about in what could only be described as panic, their movements so fast that to follow the movements of any one single creature gave the wolf a headache.

The wolf shook her head and levered herself up, forelegs, body and hind legs. The creatures made high pitch sounds of panic and then they were gone. Seffanee cast around for them, but found nothing. For a moment she stood there in bemusement, the long lush grass waving leisurely around her, the sun shining warmly, the sky cloudless and the sound of a thousand little creatures chirping and clicking in the glass cover. The wolf shook herself again and let the memories of what had happened before seeped into her mind.

Bitey…
The Bear…
Hurting…
And an anguished scream…

The she-wolf jolted. Where was Bitey? As far as she remembered, he’d somehow driven off the Bear and come to her. He’d been there when her eyes had closed and the darkness had closed in. So where was he now? The wolf felt a slight squirm of apprehension.

She had to find him.

The wolf broke into a run, her mind set on one thing.

Find Bitey.

The wolf ran, her paws thudding quietly on the grass every time they struck, the wind streamed back her fur and pressed her ears back to her skull. Every bone and every muscle in her body worked with flawless perfection, each with its assigned task. If only one part was taken away, the others could not worked half as well.

It was abit like them, her and Bitey, alone they worked well, but together they were perfect. The she-wolf kept running, instinctively heading for his usual haunts. First, his home in the tree.

A little later she skidded to a halt at the base of the tree and wiggled inside, she made a soft squeaking call like she was calling a cub. No answer. She scrambled back out of the tree and took off again. The river.

She reached it a few minutes later at a flat out run, barely managing to halt without going muzzle over tail. She looked around, he wasn’t here either! Where was he!?

The wolf took off again, plunging into the muted light of the thick woods. She dropped her nose to the ground and searched for him, when she did find his fresh trail, his scent was saturated in fear and anger and misery. The concerned knot in her gut grew and she increased her pace.

When she did eventually find him, he was in a little forest clearing surrounded in destruction and he was in the process of destroying anything he could… The place was littered with thrown stones, broken branches, torn up grass… As she watched, he wrenched a small sapling from the ground and threw it with a scream of frustration and hurt. She barked at him, a hoarse sharp sound that made him freeze and look at her.

And then Seffanee was barrelled over as Bitey flung himself at her, he was all over her, sniffing her fur and listening to her heartbeat, crushing her in a hug and then feeling her heartbeat again. Seffanee licked his face and shoved him off, sitting up. Bitey flung his arms around her neck and buried his furry face in her own grey fur. Fingers clenched in her fur, loosened, then clenched again.

The she-wolf made that low soothing sound, deep down in her belly and Bitey’s scent seemed to calm and the smell of one comforted came from him. There was a silence, then;

“Love Seffanee.” Bitey growled out. The she-wolf licked him between the horns,

I love you too fuzz face…
