I know she has writers block and all that but if I don't put my mind at rest by seeing the end I will commit suicide!

Some nice creative storytelling going on here. Nothing to add, just want to encourage you to keep going. Like most things the more you do it the better you get. Keep it up.

*waves* I’m here! I’m back! I haven’t forgotten you! I’m sorry I haven’t been around a lot, just recently I’ve been trying to write something I can publish and get some money in. Ahem, anyway, that aside, next part for you…it’s, kinda short…sorry about that…

Part 24

Days passed, nothing else untoward happened, but several times Seffanee’s hair would bristle and she would sense something near, something dark like the Bear, but other then those moments, she saw nor smelled any trace of anything dangerous.

XX Meanwhile, in the Shadow Realm XX

The leader YuYu’s were furious, just as it seemed they were going to get rid of that thorn-in-the-side wolf, that stupid Brackenwood creature with more speed then sense, had come and rescue her, and not only that, the faeries had healed her.

We must accelerate our plans! The YuYu spoke furiously, the colour of his eyes flashing quickly and violently, punctuating his words.

The wolf is proving harder to destroy then we anticipated. Answered another leading YuYu,

Then we persist in out plans regardless! Screamed the first YuYu, The wolf needs but to be distracted while the Void is opened! There were murmurs and hesitant eye-flashing in agreement.

The scout reported that there are three main enemies of the wolf, the Bear – which has been destroyed, the Lynx – our shadow Lynx is waiting in Brackenwood even as we speak and the Human. The Human, we cannot make from shadow, it is too complex, but with the Void opened, we can take one – a hunter – from its own world and bring it to Brackenwood. Put in one, slightly lower ranking YuYu.

The Humans are weak, scorned one contemptuously, They will not be hard to control.

Very well then, flashed the leader YuYu, We shall start forward with the next stage. Call the Lynx, the she-wolf cannot be allowed to disrupt our plans!

Thank you to everyone who reviewed! For your reading pleasure I bring you (finally :D ) a Double Whammy post!

Part 25

Seffanee lay in the grass, just beyond the edge of the forest, Bitey’s head resting on her ribs while she licked the gash on his leg. He’d gotten into a scrap with the Prowlies again. Every so often Bitey would flinch and make a whimpering sound, but he let the she-wolf clean the cut. She wouldn’t be happy until she had, besides, it made it feel better anyway.

When she’d finished, the pair of them just lounged in the long grass for a while, enjoying the sun. But, predictably, it wasn’t long before Bitey got restless and wanted to move. He tugged gently at the wolf’s fur, Seffanee batted at him with her tail and refused to shift. Bitey made an impatient sound and tugged again, not hard, but insistent. Seffanee tried to ignore him but Bitey was determined and eventually the she-wolf groaned and got up.

Bitey bared his teeth in a grin and pranced out of the wolf’s reach just in case she decided to get him back. Seffanee snorted and shook herself vigorously, feigning nonchalance. Just as Bitey stopped skipping about and let his guard down, the she-wolf pounced at him. Bitey yelped and jumped out of reach just in time, the wolf growled playfully and followed him. Bitey bared his teeth again and made a rough sound of amusement that could have been described as a snigger, before he took off into the forest, the she-wolf on his heels.

They wove through the light and shadows of the trees, just frolicking, their playful chase only half serious. Finally they came out of the trees into a glade where the sun was warm and small white insects fluttered about the grass. The fart of a fatsack came from somewhere in the grass, but neither the wolf nor Bitey could be bothered to find it. Once again, they lounged in the grass, drowsy in the high-summer heat.

Seffanee lay in a relaxed position, Bitey’s head on her ribs and let her eyes close, her ears relaxed, twitching occasionally when a bug settled on it. She felt content.

XX Meanwhile, in the Real World XX

Standing on a boulder at the river’s edge, the black-furred beta male of Seffanee’s old wolf pack, waited. Ever since the grey female of his pack had disappeared, he’d come here, and loyally waited for her return.

After the hunter’s had gone, he and one of his packmates, had gone searching for her. They had managed to pick up her trail and had followed it to this portion of the river. Though there had been no marks of her track continuing, and blood had stained the rocks on the river bank, they had not found her.

The dark hunter watched the sunlight flashing off the water, but turned away as the glare hurt his golden eyes. He tried to ignore the strange ache in him, an ache that had begun when days passed, and the grey she-wolf did not return. When the pack had mourned her and moved on, he had stayed, unable to drag himself away from this place. His bond to the she-wolf so strong, that he had left his pack to stay.

He stood there until night fell, he watched the moon rise, his breath smoking in the cold air, and the ache inside him intensified.

A high, wailing cry and loss and misery rose above the trees, and was lost in the wind.

Part 26

As soon as Seffanee woke, she knew with a hunter’s instincts, that today was a day of reckoning. Something much bigger then herself would be settled today, and she would be the one to settle it. For a moment, she lay quietly in the base of Bitey’s tree home, Bitey snuggled up to her, as he always did these days. He snorted softly as he nuzzled his face into her grey fur.

The she-wolf watched him for a long moment, her tail moving slightly as she thought. He looked peaceful, like a small cub and Seffanee was loathed to wake him, but, with whatever was coming; she needed to be ready.

So it was with a deep sigh the wolf gently put a paw over Bitey and nuzzled him gently. Bitey moaned and swatted but the she-wolf caught his hand in her jaws and gently squeezed. Bitey looked up at her blearily.

“Seffanee…” the wolf licked his face and stood, Bitey groaned but did likewise and followed her out when she wiggled out of the tree. The wolf stood in the early morning sun and shook herself vigorously, loose fur came out of her moulting coat in a cloud of hair. Bitey made a ‘yeck’ sound of disgust, and Seffanee let out a sound of amusement.

When she’d shaken all the loose hair from her coat, Seffanee made a soft whuffling sound of beckoning to Bitey and broke into a loping trot. Something bad was coming, and Seffanee had to see Auld Sage. She heard Bitey groaning again behind her, but then he was by her side; grumpily plodding along.

It wasn’t long before the sleek grey animal stepped out onto the soft grass of Witch Wee’s glade. No longer afraid of the small human-like woman and her house; Seffanee padded easily towards the little pink house in its tree and jumped up to the porch. Standing outside the door Seffanee barked sharply and the door soon opened as the tiny witch of Brackenwood peered out. The wolf’s pink tongue lolled from her mouth as she grinned in silent greeting. Bitey was still sulking, he stood at the base of the tree and kicked bad-temperedly at grass tussocks.

Ignoring him for the moment, Seffanee turned to Lemonee Wee and flicked her ears, grunting softly; asking for Auld Sage. The witch nodded and opened the door wider, beckoning to the wolf to come in. The she-wolf accepted the invitation and slid into the house. She found the hairless Bigfoot sitting at the table, a fresh pot of tea and a pair of cups and saucers infront of him. He looked at the she-wolf and smiled;

“Ah, Steffany.” The wolf lowered her head to him,

Auld Sage. Something bad is coming.

Auld Sage tipped his head slightly;

“Something bad, you say?” Seffanee let out a growling reply;

Yes. It is the shadow people, I can feel it.

“Hm…the YuYu are becoming stronger.” Auld Sage murmured. There was a pause before the wise old Bigfoot looked at the she-wolf again. “You are the only one that can fight them wolf, the song you sing is the only thing that can repel them. You must be ready.” Seffanee growled softly,

What about the other creatures in Brackenwood?

“They will be alright.” She was reassured, “They will stay away from the danger by themselves. But you must meet it head on. The shadows are rising around you and this is the final battle. Either you break the YuYu’s power and send them back to the dark realm, or they will consume you and drag you back to their shadow home…” Seffanee grunted, baring her teeth with a growl of defiance;

They will not take me.

Auld Sage nodded.

“Then good luck my friend.” Seffanee barked her own farewell and sprang from the house, slithering down the tree, to the soft grass once more. Bitey looked up from scrapping with the grass with a twig. The she-wolf growled, low and deep and angry. Bitey stood quickly and watched her with wide eyes.

Come Bitey. Its time we finished this…

As the she-wolf brushed past him, Bitey took hold of a handful of fur;

“Seffanee?” the wolf paused and turned slightly, looking at his questioning look and answering by nuzzling his hands and licking his face. Bitey pressed his face to her neck; “Love Seffanee.”

I know. I love you too puppy.

Then the wolf took off, breaking into a run. Bitey followed, the whole world suddenly seemed to be holding its breath, the air thick with expectation and Bitey sensed that something big was about to happen.

It’s the big (and rather long) showdown finale! :D

Part 27

Seffanee ran, knowing Bitey had no trouble keeping up with her; using only the feeling of gathering darkness to guide her. It was coming, the bad something was coming closer, she could feel it. The forest of Brackenwood seemed to cower before the gathering darkness and the very air seemed to beat and throb with the electricity of it. It made Seffanee’s hair stand up on end; it made her want to growl.

Finally, coming to one of the large glades that were all over Brackenwood, Seffanee paused. Here, something inside said. Here, was where it was going to happen. Here, was where she was going to fight the darkness.

Slowing her pace, Seffanee left the trees and walked out into the glade. Bitey came with her, one hand clenched in the fur on her shoulder. He didn’t care what was coming; he would be with his wolf friend when it came.

Once she was completely out in the open, the wolf stopped again. She looked around the glade with narrowed eyes. Something was here that wasn’t showing itself. Seffanee had to call it to fight… For a moment, the she-wolf paused. She looked at Bitey and nudged him with her muzzle.

You should go back Bitey.

Bitey looked down at the she-wolf when she nudged him firmly. He knew what Seffanee meant by the gesture, and he shook his head.

“Bitey stay with Seffanee.” The wolf looked at him for a long moment with piercing golden eyes, then she seemed to accept his decision and once again scanned the empty glade.

There was not even the sound of crickets in the grass.

Suddenly, Seffanee felt angry. This was her territory, how dare these shadows try to encroach upon it. The YuYu belonged to their own Shadow Realm. They had no right here and the she-wolf was going to send them back to where they came from. She gently shrugged off Bitey’s hand and he remained where he was as Seffanee trotted further into the plain of grass.

Once again, she paused, growling angrily to herself as felt her anger bubbling in her gut. Then the she-wolf raised her sleek grey muzzle to the sky and howled her challenge. Once the wolf song faded, she heard the reply. A deep, rumbling growl shook the air, and before her; two smouldering embers glowed into existence. Seffanee crouched slightly and snarled as swirls of darkness began to appear, pulling together to form a shadow creature of YuYu magic.

It was a Lynx.

The she-wolf’s first reaction was to bristle and snarl and back away slowly. But the urge to protect her territory, for the land she’d come to love, and Bitey, rose inside her and she bared her teeth, moving slightly from side to side in readiness to attack.

The Lynx suddenly roared, Seffanee snarled back and sprang to one side as the Lynx pounced at her before she turned and attacked the Lynx from behind. The Lynx screamed and spun, clouting the wolf on the side of the head with one huge paw, throwing the wolf down so hard the wolf hit the ground with a crunch.

Fighting the coloured stars that exploded in front of her eyes, Seffanee scrambled out of the way as the Lynx came at her again. The Lynx roared, Seffanee snarled, and the two animals fought; becoming a grappling ball of fur and shadow and fury.

Bitey watched the scrapping animals, hopping from one hoof to the other in agitation. He watched the she-wolf bite down hard on some part of the shadow creature before springing away, and the Lynx screamed. Bitey took his chance and charged at the Lynx, the same way he’d attacked the Bear. Instead of the Lynx splitting like the Bear had done; Bitey collided into a solid mass, he bounced off the Lynx, no expecting for it to resist him and rolled over backwards in the grass.

The Lynx whirled on Bitey, snarling; but before it could attack him, Bitey heard Seffanee howl furiously before attacking the Lynx again.

They didn’t know that the real danger was not in the world they could see…

XX In The Shadow Realm XX

As their Lynx fought the she-wolf in Brackenwood, the YuYu’s were furiously working in their Shadow Realm. They were finally strong enough to open a physical portal into the she-wolf’s world and snatch a human who was not in the Twilight between waking a sleeping, and steal him to Brackenwood. The portal would have to been where they had taken the wolf; the fabric between the worlds would be thinner there.

Only a little longer, and they would be ready…

XX In The Real World XX

The black beta male of Seffanee’s wolf pack was still by the river. He was tired and had only briefly left the place the she-wolf had disappeared to hunt. Sitting on a large flat stone by the bank; he watched the water, and the little darting fish in it.

He’d been feeling on edge all morning and when his fur suddenly bristled, he was almost ready for it. He was on his feet in a moment, hackles raised, teeth bared; growling. He sniffed the air and something smelt…wrong…

XX In The Shadow Realm XX

The lesser YuYu squealed in excitement as their magic came together and the portal began to open. A bright slit in the fabric of the universe that slowly grew wider and came a three-way opening. One to the YuYu’s plain, the other two showing two other different worlds; the lush Brackenwood glade where two furious animals fought and a clear stream with a rock bank, surrounded by tall trees. And another wolf.

The black male was much bigger then the grey she-wolf and the weaker YuYu began to panic, running blindly and screaming as the he-wolf blinked and watched them in bemusement.

XX In The Real World XX

With bewilderment and not a hint of understanding, the black wolf watched as a tear appeared. It was like the claws of some great wolf had actually wounded the air. When the split opened a little, it revealed another tear. He could see a landscape that looked dark and colourless and forbidding, but he could also see another landscape, this one lush and green and inviting. He could also see a pack of tiny little shadow people that seemed to be chanting. When they saw him, they began shrieking and running around waving their arms, eyes wide and flashing different colours.

He watched the tiny shadow people as they panicked like they were a herd of deer and wondered what they were and if they tasted any good. He was about to find out when he heard a lynx roar and the howl of a furious she-wolf. His sleek ears twitched and pricked. He knew that voice…hopefully the black wolf tipped back his head and howled.

The YuYu’s screamed in agony as this new wolf sang and they cringed back, falling over each other to get away.

Oblivious to this, the black wolf paused and cocked his head. To his joy, he heard an answering cry that he recognised and hadn’t heard for what seemed forever. Following the sound, the black wolf plunged through the tear in the air and found himself in the lush green world that smelt strange but wonderfully clean and thriving with unchecked life.

Before him he saw a huge black Lynx and a silver she-wolf fighting. He recognised the she-wolf and with a snarl, the bigger male charged forward and joined the fight, ripping into the Lynx ferociously.

Bitey watched in half terror, half wonder as the other wolf appeared. He was dark and much bigger and stockier then Seffanee, but he was just as fierce as he attacked.

Working together, the two wolves sprang away from the Lynx, snarling and circling as the Lynx whirled, unable to decided with enemy to attack. Bitey watched as the two wolves worked in perfect seamlessly, like two halves of one whole.

Was this what Seffanee’s kind were like then? Was that why she found it so hard to be alone? Because, she wasn’t meant to be with a group, not by herself?

Seffanee recognised the other wolf as soon as his scent wafted past her nose. A member of her own pack was somehow here with her. She had no time to wonder how, or to greet her packmate however; the Lynx was still a threat.

Instead, she howled to him and heard him reply; and the Lynx screamed in agony. For a few seconds there was a breathless silence. Then, simultaneously, both wolves began to howl. One voice alone could not banish the YuYu’s shadow creature, but with two combined, the wolf song was too powerful.

The Lynx screamed again as the wolves’ howl ripped through it. It’s form began to warp and melt and it twisted into one itself until finally, it sank into the grass and ceased to exist.

The howl faded. And there was a moment of silence, then Bitey tackle hugged Seffanee, growling happily and nuzzling her fur. The grey she-wolf’s tongue lolled out in a relieved grin and she licked Bitey between the horns and nuzzling him in return. Then she gently nudged him with her muzzle and Bitey released her and backed away as she went to meet the other wolf.

They sniffed noses quietly, inhaling each others’ scent, tails wagging vaguely, uttering small sounds of happiness. The big male licked the female’s face and gently tugged on her ear and she nuzzled his thick, furry neck before the two of them began to playfully fight like puppies, rolling in the long grass, smothering their scents together. Eventually they stopped their little romp and the dark male growled happily and sat as the grey female nuzzled him.

For a few minutes, they communicated silently as wolves do; the black wolf asking the grey how she’d come to be here and what this place was and how she’d been surviving, and the she-wolf telling the male all about her adventures in Brackenwood; calling Bitey over to introduce him.

And this is Bitey.

The black male stood and circled the Brackenwooder, examining him, scenting him before he turned to Seffanee.

He’s a wild one, this cub of yours.

He would make a good wolf.

Breaking off his inspection of Bitey, the black male sniffed noses with the female.

How is the pack?

They’re fine. They’ll be happy to see you.

Are they with you?

No, they thought you were lost and moved on. Don’t worry, we’ll be able to find them.

Abruptly, Seffanee’s ears went down and back and she whined. When she had first come to Brackenwood, she would have stopped at nothing to get back home, to her pack. But now…things had changed. She was happy here. She had a name, and a purpose. Brackenwood needed her to keep the YuYu’s in check. And she had Bitey…

Bitey…

The black wolf made a sympathetic sound and nuzzled the she-wolf between the ears gently before he moved back bit, towards the rift that was still open.

He couldn’t come with us…

Seffanee barked sharply, not moving.

I won’t leave him behind!

The male cocked his head and stepped closer again,

But...the pack?

They’ve survived without me haven’t they?

Yes, but…

They don’t
need me, do they?

They miss you.

But I’m
needed here. I have to protect Brackenwood from the shadow people.

But you don’t belong here.

That made Seffanee pause. It was true. She didn’t belong her. This wasn’t her world. Sensing her indecision, the black male came close and nuzzled her gently.

Come on…we should go home…

But…

The tear is closing, look, it is smaller even now.

Seffanee looked towards the rift and saw that it was smaller. Soon it would close entirely and she would lose her chance to go home, go back to her pack.

Come on…please? I’ve waited so long to get you back…

The black wolf licked her muzzle in a wolf kiss and Seffanee slowly, uncertainly, followed him closer to the rift. Bitey, watching this, made a pathetic wailing sound and followed. He locked his arms around the she-wolf’s neck.

“Don’t go Seffanee!” Seffanee whined and licked him, her indecision growing stronger. By now, the black wolf had passed through the tear and turned, waiting for the she-wolf on the other side. The tear was closing faster now, sealing up, healing.

Bitey…

Bitey hugged her tighter, burying his face in her neck.

“Bitey need Seffanee. Bitey love Seffanee…”

I love you too puppy…

And with that, the silver she-wolf made her decision.

I’m staying.

She told the black wolf. The male put his ears back and whined, knowing her mind was set and feeling a coldness in his belly. He was going to lose his favourite she-wolf again… Then, just as the rift began to finish sealing, the male moved impulsively and instinctively and he was suddenly scrambling back through.

His tail just whipped through the gap as the tears closed. Forever sealing Brackenwood off from that other less idyllic world.

The black wolf stood panting, his deep golden eyes, still watching the place where the wound in the world had been. Then he looked at Bitey and Seffanee who were staring at him in astonishment. The male slowly went up to his silver she-wolf and nuzzled her, licking her muzzle.

I won’t lose you again girl.

Seffanee whimpered happily and wagged her tail, burying her muzzle in his dark fur.

XX Some Time Later XX

The warm sunshine of Brackenwood, shone down on the small group of creatures. Two wolves, a silver she-wolf and a black he-wolf; lounged sleepily in the grass. The black’s body curled protectively around his smaller mate. The third animal was Bitey. He rolled around in the grass, tumbling about with - and being pounced upon by – five tiny wolf cubs. The smallest of the litter; a little white female, clambered all over him and batted his horns with tiny paws before Bitey scooped her off his head and set her gently in the grass with her brothers and sister, he growled playfully and went to pouncing on the little balls of fluff, but they had already scattered, making the happy little squeaking sounds of baby things everywhere. Bitey chased them playfully, sniggering as he caught them and held the five squirming babies in his arms.

Lifting her head from her mate’s shoulder, Seffanee made a soft whuffling sound, and Bitey brought then squeaking pups to her, setting them down next to the warm belly. The cubs immediately began climbing over each other to get to their mother’s teats to suckle. Once they were quiet and feeding, Bitey plopped down beside the small wolf family and was almost instantly being washed by Seffanee’s mate. The black male cleaned his mate’s oldest ‘cub’ with his rough tongue, growling softly but gently, when Bitey protested.

When the he-wolf was satisfied Bitey was clean, he let him go and Bitey sighed, leaning his head on the male wolf’s back. He yawned in the drowsy heat.

“Love Seffanee.” He murmured, “Love Ey-dun. Love puppies.” He was answered by a pair of loving parental growls and the muffled squeaks of feeding cubs, all meaning the same thing;

We love you too Bitey.

Bitey closed his eyes and allowed himself to drift off. Surrounded by the first wolf in Brackenwood, her dark mate and their beautiful cubs.

His family.

The End

Thanks Rick. ^^ And thank you to everyone who read and commented. As soon as Waterlollies comes out, I'll be posting something to go with that. Apologies for not being around lately, but I've been rehauling all my fiction on the net and have started concentrating on original fiction and writing projects that help my original fiction. If you're interested, check out my account of DeviantArt, I'm LoboDiabloLoneWolf there as well. ^^

In the meanwhile, made this basic banner/front cover for A Brackenwood Story and decided to upload it. ^^

Aww I just finished reading this, and I have to say it was the most captivating story I have read. The ending was so cute and it's inspired me to draw some illustrations of a few of the scenes in the story. I hope you don't mind :++:
