Ok Shuryou,

What follows is my critique on your work. It'll need explaining, but it'll have to wait as I don't have time at the moment. But, here a low res version of the Photoshop File so you can see how it's built up. I've used more layers than I typically do, but I wanted to keep the steps saved.

Here's my version:

And the step-by-step:

I feel sort of awkward asking for crits on a birthday present, especially since the recipient will have access to view this.... Hope you don't mind, Dave.

What do you think? Anything I could have done better?
Thanks :)

Wow Jemooky, that looks awsome!

Humbleego;

Wow, no need to put my work too shame :P

I'm not a particularly experienced Artist, so getting a Natural look, and Getting shades and highlights in the right place are kinda tricky for me.

I saved that photoshop file, do you mind if I use it as reference too draw my next Dragon?

Wasn't at all trying to do that. I was justing thinking the best way to address troublesome spots in your piece was to show you. I'm not expecting you to make it look exactly like my style or anything. I just wanted to show you real "art rules" and how they'd apply to your specific piece.

  1. Color Choice: One thing I noticed about your piece is that you used darkish highly saturated purple over a highly saturated dark blue. For this reason, your character gets lost in the composition. In my version I choose a lighter orangie color (the compliment of purple) for the background. This pops the dragon off it's background while keeping harmony of color.

  2. Color Saturation: I see this often in newer artists, this tendancy to use 100% saturation everywhere. I'm a huge fan of bright colors, but it's better to balance them with more muted colors. Color is a relative property. In other words, blue is only blue when viewed next to red or green. Light is only light when next to dark and bright colors feel more bright next to muted hues. Controlling this balance is terribly hard thing to master (I'm nowhere close myself). It takes time and practice, but you can excellerate your advancement by looking at how other artists balance thier pieces. Looking at all the old masters and new favorites, look at how they use color.

  3. Lighting: One thing about your piece is a lack of consistant lighting. Do you you sketch out your lighting before you paint? If not, you should, planning early helps you keep things consistant. On the second frame of my step-by-step, you'll see I've blocked in some rough shadows. If I had taken more time, my finished piece would have been better.

  4. Highlights: You've also overused specular highlights IMO. They work best when used sparingly. Check out this Ultimate Painting Tutorial by Niklas Jansson. This guy is sick and I've learned a great deal from his work.

  5. Reference Material: What did you look at to draw your dragon? I looked at drawings of a Brontosaurus, but I could have looked at a snake or giraffe to reference the anatomy of the neck. If you know the structure of what you're drawing, it'll help you draw it better.

Anyway, hope this helps and I hope I've not come off as a prick. I truly was just trying to help. Also, don't be discouraged by the amount of my critiques. We all start somewhere and we've all got a long way to go. :bfoot:

When I said No need to put my work too shame, I was only complimenting your work, I didn't mean too sound as though i was upset.

And thanks, I think the more critique the merrier, I'll make sure too keep all those points in mind. I didn't use reference material, so that's no doubt one of my problems. And I also didn't plan my shading/highlighting.

Thanks a whole lot, and no you didn't come off as a prick. I've been a fan of some of your work for a while now anyway. ^_^

There's a town for sale (click) and someone will end up winning the auction. This is just like any other time land is for sale - they will build something on it. Probably a resort or a hunting club  It really makes me sad to see a beautiful place get paved over and ruined.

Since I'm not a millionare and I cannot buy the town, I decided to make my own artistic rendering of what I would do.

Posted Image

Hey if I could afford to buy a town, why wouldn't I be able to afford a castle and airship? :P There's a little hobbit hole in the lower left hill which I love the idea of. The earth keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I couldn't get rid of the telephone poles in photoshop, but those would definitely have to go.

I wanted to build a place for people to live without doing too much damage to the environment and keep it earth friendly. That airship is no Hummer, but it would do just fine. :D Sadly, in reality someone will probably buy the town, build some houses, and then a bunch of people will move in and bring along their big SUV's. :worry:

i agree 10000000000 percent time a billion infinity. i fucking hate it!
sorry for language but seriusly, like in Australia it is only about 3% forest or sum shit but i think we are gettin it up a bit but it will only be like 8% in 20 years or sumthing, its gay as.
i was arguing with my mum jsut for paving our backyard, im like wtf wats wrogn with grass and trees? now all we have is chopped up trees (mulch) on our garden and pavers around our pool, and her arguement was that grass takes too much watering <_< , i think our pool has taken a little more water then the grass would....

boundlesss you should become a millionare, u deserve it, you could buy all the palces like this and keep them natural. as long as that castle has no power and the air ship is run on water lol.
