Lol, im pretty sure the guy isnt emo (who i drew it for)

Although I did mean to only have 4 fingers (cartoony style), i'll agree that they don't look that great. I spent more time figuring out how to draw the hand holding the heart than i did with the rest of the picture combined :P

FAAARK! didnt even know something like this was possible in flash........
I think the character is jsut the tiniest inciest bit flat for the rest of the picture, probably just coz of the 3D looks to the things underneath her, everything behind her looks nice blurred tho.

GOOD JOB! ;)

Well, its pretty simple. You draw with lines, color it, and remove the lines with the Eraser. When coloring you have to consider the light sources and how they would effect the background. You have to do shadows, the glossy light reflections on "polished" materials (however the hell its called XD) and general light effects. You dont want it all to look the same. When the colors are too similar it kinda ruins the 3D illusion. Hope that helps somewhat.

Great pic Espen!

The only crits I have is:
1) The background could use some more detail. Especailly the purple and dark grey parts.
2) Theres something wrong about the black guys pose. It just doesnt seem like he's resisting at all.

What was the assignment exactly?

You might wanna have more contrast in your shading to make the little guy "pop" out some more. Maybe even add a few pure white highlights to make him shiny like a seacritter. I also think it might look more fluid if you make the tentacles merge right into the body rather than be separated by a line. Not only does it look like a puppet made of glued-on pieces, but the circle shape is too obvious.

Might be cute to accessorize the guy s'more too. A gold earring, scar, maybe even a patch stretching over one of his bulging eyes. Yarrr!

our assignment is to animate a simple short story, if i make it more detailed with the tentacles actions i'll probably have a hard time animating it later on

and btw its only my first year :bing:

Are you doing this Frame by Frame (traditional) or Symbol Tweens (cut-out or marionette style)?

If you're going FBF I'd suggest using less unique outline colors and making bigger suction cups (thus less in number). I'd also simplify your hat logo.

I'd also desaturate his blues some, it's a bit 0-0-255. :gasp:

Well, it's finally happened. I understood that. I'm a nerd! :(

But I agree with Bleegs and Daux. Are you gonna do a sheet with a half and 3/4 view, too?

its' mostly going to be symbol tweens but im going to do frame by frame in some parts like for the tentacles so it looks more natural.

ok everyone i took you're advice and i've decided to change his character completly and came up with this.

Love the new Cpt. Suctions.....I thought it was an entirely different character at first. I like the small highlight & spots added on his head. It helps sell him as a real character with features and not just shapes. Looks like you heeded Bleego's advice & desaturated him a bit, and it looks 10x better, imo.

-I would maybe make his pirate hat a bit smaller. It's large size takes attention away from his face & it looks like it could be blown right off in a strong breeze (or ocean current :P). Also, instead of outlining in black, maybe try a charcoal color similar to how you have done with Petrie. The black outlining of the hat, feather, & headwrap? underneath detach it from his body.

-Now that you've toned down his skin, the belt needs the same treatment....it sticks out quite a bit. I'd also put his pistol around back or on the side, as you've done with the other two characters, where it doesn't command so much attention.

-Petrie & the lobster's colors could stand some toning down as well. Anything that's "0-0-255," as Humble put it, tends to look like it's something for a children's book. Even some basic color theory can really make your characters sparkle. I'm a fan of bright colors as well, but like everything else, they're more effective if they are balanced out.

I think these will be really cool Flash characters and hope to see them animated soon! Keep going!

-KF

Another very nice image. One thing that seems to be catching my eye though is that the woman looks a little stiff up against the tree, as if she might fall over. Great shading though. How long did this one take you?
