Whoop; sorry for the multipost there.
I must've been really out of it last night. Especially since those aren't wrists; they're knuckles; I was fiddling around with emphasizing them, but I guess I didn't make it all that clear. No problem, EG. |

Then why'd you say wrist? I agree they don't look right; I was trying (and failing) to figure out the proper foreshortening there, since ElectricGnort was having issues with it. I may do a larger redline of his hands tonight like I did for his feet, but no holding your breath...

Well I'm destroying Ele's octo-chick, honestly, it's going be tough to beat the origional. True there are flaws, plenty, but all of them look perfect in the context of the drawing, the style, the faces, the front on perspective, it all meshes quite well, ehh, I guess I'll give it a shot. I couldn't get mookey's sin city thing down, it looks so much better in a vector format. |

Here's Rade's Fire Wizard scene that I have taken on:![]() I thought I'd first try changing the wizard a bit. Since we don't see his face, I figured I could turn him so that he is facing his scene, maybe making him seem more a part of it. He is looking down a bit, perhaps in an introspective moment, so I thought I'd try having him make a low-level fire effect with his fingers, almost as if he's doodling while he's thinking of something else. So here is the wizard with his back to us, contemplating a little fire he is conjuring up with his left hand. I am concentrating on structure and proportion here, thinking about how a hooded robe hangs on a figure. I first tried a profile stance (left) so we would have a chance to see some facial features, but it is too static and flat. Then I turned him away from us a bit more, thinking I could turn his head a bit to his right so we can get a glimpse of his nose and beard behind the folds of his hood. To get the major folds of the hood and robe, I put a thin fleece blanket on my head and studied it in the mirror for a while, much to my wife's amusement. ![]() Now the location. Rade has a stream, a shack and some kind of fire pit in his drawing. There are also some perspective problems to overcome. We are looking straight down on the river and fire pit, but from a lower angle at the shack, and we are eye-to-eye with the wizard. So those three different horizon lines had to come together first of all (1). ![]() After I drew the shack in 1, I started thinking about different kinds of huts and shacks and where a fire wizard might actually live. I researched some Polynesian bamboo and thatch huts, and their influences are in A and B. Then I started thinking about how the wizard might make use of his surroundings, maybe making his hut follow the natural form of a hillside ( C). Or what if he found an existing cave in a rock face and just built a front onto it (D)? This is fun! I took the hillside hut ( C) and worked it into the landscape in 2, moving the fire pit off onto an island and putting some big Celtic standing stones around it. If it's going to be a fire wizard's practice range, it's got to look special and mystical (and be away from combustible things like huts). In 3 I started composing all the elements: hut, island (now a peninsula so I don't have to include a boat), and wizard. The wizard sits on the left vertical third line, and I cleared up the background elements to let the focus fall on his firey fingers. He has his back to his hut, but he is overlapping it, which should attach him to it conceptually (the viewer will think it belongs to him). I kept experimenting in 4, flipping him so he is facing both the fire pit and his hut, which is another way of attaching them to the figure. I stretched the scene out a bit to give the elements more space, and I moved the hut further away so we could see more of it. Not sure about that yet. In 5 I thought I'd see what it looked like with the wizard facing us again. It just doesn't work. The hut and the fire pit are suddenly incidental to the scene and the focus is too much on what the wizard is doing with his (now right) hand. I don't know what dimensions Rade is going to be working at (4:3, 720x480, 16:9, etc) so I'm going to go back and work on 3 some more as it is closest to his original aspect ratio. That's what we have so far. kib |
