I dont do much photography [mostly just snapshot some cool looking parts of the woods]. Using my hi-tek Canon powershot A75 [3.2 Mpx] I made an attempt at a self portrait of sorts. Aside from having fingers to the Wacom, another of my hobbies is walking about the woods and collecting deer bones. I gots about 6 or so skulls and prolly 3 deersworth of the rest of the skeletons. So here is me facing off my horned skull. Did some quik color adjusting and patching/cropping/moving.
Which looks better: more space between me and the skull to emphasize the separation and distance, or less space to have a more compact composition and frame?

btw, the skull was not cut out and moved, that shadow on the bottom just happened. should I try and blend that into the background as well so it doesnt stick out too much?

Yeah, she's pretty special, but not in a romantic way if that's what you meant.
I love shooting her because she is happy all the time and manages to end up natural on the photos. :fpbls:

A few more while I'm at it -

So do you keep a few dirty lenses especially for stylistic purposes?
'Cause it looks great

Hehe, it's not always the lens... Most of them were in my photo album when I scanned.

Good news and bad news im afraid...

The good news is that my camera has finally arrived :D
The bad news is that i forgot to order a memory card so i only have room for 5 pictures.

Anyway here are some I took today...

This is of my cat, it took forever to get her to look at the camera she kept looking away, obviously knew what i was trying to do but I think it came out good.

Hey all! Been a while since I've contributed to the photo thread, but I recently took a mini-vacation to visit a friend in St. Louis for a Flogging Molly show & to check out a couple abandoned meat processing plants. Here's one of em, Armour Packaging Plant:

There's more on the way as soon as I can scrape up enough cash to get my other 2 rolls developed.

Very nice. I really like those...I can't pick a favorite, but I really like 4, 5, 6, and 8. :D Yay!

Also, looking back, elephant's style rocks. That girl with blond hair photographs very well...and the lighting and expressions...just awesome.

You clearly stated that you didn't take the photo, and the version you posted was pretty low res. I wouldn't worry about it; it's a very impressive capture.

That said, I'm sure the mods would appreciate on-topic posts, so i'll just shut up now.. ;)

are you a moderator on this website or anyone that has any say at all?

Heinrich!
Depth of field on the pics looks great. Is there a trick to do it like that (macro or something?) or isn't my cam sufficient?

The answer lies in the lens! No macro-trick. You can read about lenses here.
I'm using an old soviet film camera Zenit-E and a Helios-44 lens (not a zoom-lens, can't zoom with it).

That post is funny for the following reasons:
1. it was made two months ago
2. it wasn't addressed to you
3. the last line (the one about shutting up) is made entirely in references to myself
4. I'm no less a moderator than you are ;)

Anyway, it's no big deal.

What elephant said is exactly true. The lens determines how your depth of field will be shown. A short lens, say 50mm, at an aperture of f/2.8 will have a very wide depth of field when compared to a lens at 200mm at the same aperture. Obviously the wider the aperture, the more and more blurred the background will become. See this Wikipedia article on bokeh to see some prime example of background blur (aka bokeh). The photo linked there is taken at f/1.2 at 85mm using the canon 85mm f/1.2 L lens, which is known for its fabulous bokeh (as you can see). Another factor for bokeh is the distance of the camera from the subject and from the background elements; the farther away the background elements are form the subject (and therefore, the point of focus), the more blurred they will be. If you have a point and shoot camera, then you are limited by your camera, but it's really your lens that does this limiting.

I managed to get a decent shot of a robin today with a 135mm lens, which is much shorter than what most serious photographers would be using (i'm not really a birder).

I like the quality of your photos Elephant....each one definitely feels like -you- took it. Even the ones without the girl are somehow noticeably yours.

Looking at them makes me want to try an experiment with my 35mm & take a skylight lens & scuff it up a bit...although I think it'd get lost in most of the subjects I like to shoot.

Good stuff all around!

-Folville, great shot of the robin. National Geographic would be proud!
