![]() Sorry for the massive delay, schoolwork got to me and this kinda floated to the bottom of the pile of my thoughts  The rules for these tasks Basically, each week you'll be given a rough guideline to follow. Anything you want to add is completely up to you. The main idea is just to have fun and improve at animating. This week's Animate That is: What's your favourite stroke? Not a medical one, I hope :P. Freestyle, Backstroke, Butterfly, take your pick! If you don't want to animate a human, you're more than welcome to animate an animal / fish swimming! Some things to consider: Entry: Where will your character start? On land? In the water? Technique: How will they swim? Expertise: Will the character be good at swimming? Or will they just sink like a brick? The Focus: (Optional) Anticipation, Squash and Stretch. Entry to the pool. Crouching before diving? Creating a convincing cycle. If you don't know how to do a particular stroke (or even if you do) act it out. Download a few reference videos. Also the winter olympic games could be a good source. Concentrate on how the water effects the swimmer. Don't worry about the effect of the swimmer on the water so much (splash, waves, etc). Focus on the character. Most Importantly: If you're having any problems with the exercise, don't hesitate to ask for help. And make sure to post your progress for feedback and for others to see! Finally...HAVE FUN!

Hmm, I'm not sure how much this took, maybe something around 30 to 40 minutes. Damn I need a Wacom http://img158.imageshack.us/my.php?image=swim17qm.swf Sorry for the sucky watersplash & underwater effect, first time doing those :s |

HeadlessChicken As awesome as the animation that you've posted is, the idea of these activities is to improve on your animation skills, not just showcase what you've done before. With that said, take the animation you've shown us and see how you can improve on it. For you that might mean improving the timing, drawing more frames for a smoother animation, or trying a different drawing technique / style. KalleR That is really very awesome! I especially love your underwater diffraction effect! You have a great sense of timing, and that really shows throughout your entire animation, but especially from the jumping off the diving board / flip. Don't be apologising for your splash, it's very subtle and very effective. I didn't notice the splash at first, and you know you've done a good job if it goes un-noticed. The simple bubbles are also very effective. It fits the style that you've chosen to use, very simple, not too many of them. Well used. Now for the crits... I think your character grows about 2 ft from the start to the end of the animation That's all I can spot. Good on ya! |

Wow KalleR, That's come out really well. Proves to everyone that you don't have to have a Wacom to do a decent animation! Having said that, you seem pretty passionate about animation, seems odd that you haven't got a Wacom yet. Once you get used to it, it will make a huge difference! With this practice, unless you can visualise the swimming strokes perfectly in your mind, It'll be worth doing some research into swimming. Watching videos or maybe even at your local pool or something. |

Nice one jon, but you might want to accent that spash a bit more. Heres mine, did it in a hour or so, really rough, but i decided to go the fish route. Find it here! Comment and Critical strikes please! *criticisms Edit: Lags a bunch at the end, not sure why. |
