Sorry I took a month to getting around to doing this, but stuff happens and busyness kicks in and it hurts my routines. But anyway, it's here now so don't worry! First, but not least, Last comp's winner... After careful consideration of a number of different aspects of your particle entries, and much tossing and turning during sleepless nights, I finally decided that the winner of the January Actionscript Competition is... Jaehl! With his whirlpool entry... I don't know how Mr. Jiggmin wants to organise whatever it was for his prize, the book or whatever it was. Maybe contact him by PM James. I'll organise a signature banner sooner or later, but you will (eventually) get one. I also spent a few hours reviewing all of the entries, and showing mark allocations and your scores, which you can find at this location... http://dump.vector-sector.gotdns.com/asreview-01-06.txt If it's not working and you're checking during a weekday, my dad probably made me turn my computer off. It should always be available on the weekends. Onto this month (and a half's) competition! Looked at the title? Good. No, this has nothing to do with rounding numbers to the nth decimal place, this is about dogs and sheep! I've pre-prepared a fla file for you (FlashMX 2004 and Flash8, I can't do plain old MX. If somebody could re-save it that would be awesome). This file has some basic movement stuff going on, but you've got to make it a lot more complicated... Your Task Make the dog round up the sheep. Do what now? You read me. Make the dog round up the sheep. But... how? That's up to you. I'm leaving this fairly open, because I learnt with the last competition that if I leave certain aspects open I'm more likely to get awesome and individual results from each of you. So yeah, go for your life! So, where's this file? You can find all related files in http://dump.vector-sector.gotdns.com/as If it's not working and you're checking during a weekday, my dad probably made me turn my computer off. It should always be available on the weekends. Restrictions However, there are a few things that I'm limiting... being: You will not draw anything. The only thing you will change is code. You will not alter any of the movieclips. The only thing you will change is code. You will not create your own movieclips. (except of course through code) The only thing you will change is code. You don't have to leave the code as it is currently, however I'll probably mark you better if you work around what has been given to you. You may (and are encouraged to) post your work as you progress for critique and suggestions.Submission Due April 15th 2006, 12:00 NOON. (GMT +10)! E-Mail your FINAL VERSION ONLY to vector.kerr spl@t gmail.com . If you can't figure out what spl@t is supposed to be then you don't deserve to win. I think that's it. Although it's very late. So if I think of anything else I'll put in a big white EDIT and put it in this post. So check occasionally. Go forth and pro...gram! Enjoy!

Nice, I'll enter competition. I have no knowledge of AS but it has a syntax that reminds me of php/javascript so it should be pretty easy to understand... perhaps

You're quite right. PHP and Actionscript are both (in my opinion) based off C or C++, and so learning one if you know the other isn't really that much of a feat to achieve. There's a few specific things like properties and variable creation in actionscript, but they're pretty easy to learn. Sorry about the long load for anybody that's tried to download the files, it seems my brother left his computer on mega-download when he went to a party. <_< |

Yeah, sure. I'll do the same prize offering as last time. Though I plan to enter this one... I guess if I win I'll buy myself something nice.

I like the way that you've approached this one, well done! You may want to do something about the depths of the sheep when they move, at the moment they seem to stay the same size no matter where they are in relation to all of the other sheep, same goes for the dog. But that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Keep it up! |

Watch Out, These Leaves Bite.

Mus: Nice way to start out and it looks great so far. Also, you might want to have the legs on the sheep be moving at all times because the dog is running, but the sheep are sorta just standing there. (Just a suggestion, you dont have to use it.) I wish I knew some AS, I only know the mear basics (if even) but I'm going to keep the file and try to figure out some AS and just experiment with it. But don't expect anything out of me from this competition. |

Jigmin, your dog doesn't really round them up, he just runs with them
To get some realism here you guys have to remember how sheep rounding is done. If the sheep are running from one field to another, they'll all stay packed until some stupid sheep blinks and decideds to turn or something, in which case most of the herd will probably go straight or they might follow the stray sheep. In this case the dog has to go AROUND the sheep, and further than them, and slowly bring them back towards the center of the screen and guide them back towards their goal. An interesting idea to follow here would be to have all the sheep runnning right and the dog following behind, scrolling up and down around the sheep, keeping an eye on them, and at a random time one random sheep suddenly runs in another direction, any really, not too fast though, that's when the dog suddenly starts to focus a little on that one sheep, so if he's let's say a quarter of the screen beneath the other sheep (so, if the sheep are in the middle, this sheep would be between the sheep and the bottom of the screen) the dog would then come chasing up AROUND the sheep, getting closer to the sheep from UNDERNEATH, to then guide him back towards the group... If you see what I mean... You could either use x/y relations, or if you're very good at maths some polar coordinates MIGHT be able to do it if they work in flash (never looked it up ^^) because you'd need a gradually getting smaller curve so the dog gets closer to the sheep from the outwards in so as to scare the sheep in the right direction... So yeah... I've only just woken up, use what I say with care ~Bobly |
