Modelling Challenge #2

Hey guys. I'm really sorry I haven't made a second modelling challenge before now. I've been really busy getting my portfolio together for university applications. The good news is that it paid off and I got accepted into my first choice. Hooray for me and hooray for you, because now you get to model more stuff for -me- to judge. >=)

First thing's first. Who wins the last competiton? All those months ago...

The Scores.

The scores are out of 10 and I will judge the models according to Aesthetics (prettiness), Wireframe (cleanliness), Functionality (practicality) and Context (the model's environment).

Mathulus

Aesthetics - (6/10)

Nicely modelled, but a bit dull. Maybe next time you can try adding some points of interest, such as engravings or other flourishes.

Wireframe - (7/10)

Very clean wireframe. No real problems there, though there are a few 'surgery scars' as results of boolean operations. Booleans are very useful for removing shapes in solid object, but they can mess with the wireframe something rotten. Use only when absolutely neccesary. Try finding work arounds. If you want a hole in a part of your model try using the 'insert vertex' tool in polygon subobject mode, then chamfer the new vertex. Play around a little with the result and see what comes from it.

Functionality - (9/10)

Very good. It clearly 'works'. It's very obvious that a passcard is required to remove the bolts between the doors, thus allowing them to be pulle open on their tracks. Nicely done.

Context - (2/10)

A wall and a floor are all that surrounds the door. It requires a passcard yet it has bars which means the room beyond can be seen by anyone. Is the door guarding a secret lab, with highly delicate information, or is it simply the door to a set of holding cells? Being able to model is one thing, but being able to model an object that fits within its context is on another level. Don't be disheartened, just try to think about it a little bit more next time. :)

Overall - (6/10)

Vector

Aesthetics - (8/10)

It looks very pretty. Very complex. The wires coming down from the ceiling look very cool and add to the very industrial feel of the piece. I like it a lot.

Wireframe - (6/10)

Mostly clean as far as I can see (I only have an early wireframe to judge from here).A clearer close up wireframe would've been preferable. Try taking a screenshot of the model with the wireframe over it, rather than a wire render. Makes it easier to see mistakes on complex models. :)

Functionality - (3/10)

Let's be honest. It's not particularly functional is it? ;) I gave you three points for the wires which pull the door up. The main thing that let you down was the empty space around the door. Makes the door a wee bit pointless if you don't mind me saying.

Context - (9/10)

Very nicely done. This is where your model really shines. The door is clearly in some sort of basement storage facility. Lots of wires and pipes and crates give the impression that this is a functioning building and that people are likely to walk through the door at any given moment. The ramp gives the indication that people are likely to load up trolleys of these crates to take in/out of the storage area. I like it. :)

Overall - (6.5/10)

Electric Gnort

Aesthetics - (4/10)

I like the look of it. It's very sci fi and quite believable. It looks very boxey though. Try chamfering edges and playing around on a vertex sub-object level to make things look a little more... curvey.

Wireframe - (5/10)

Mostly clean, from what I can see. The control panel looks a bit confused and the cylinders have a lot of sides, probably more than is neccesary to look smooth.

Functionality - (6/10)

No real problems here. A control pad with sliding doors has ample functionality. Although there are no tracks above or below the doors, so they could potentially get misaligned if knocked by something heavy. Also I'm not entirely certain, but from this angle it looks like there's no hollow space for the doors to slip into when they open. I know we're supposed to assume it's there, but some visual proof would make your door even more believable.

Context - (7/10)

I like this aspect of your model a lot. From your images I get the impression that we're looking at a heavy security door into a military-esque enclosure or base from outside. Works for me. :)
Perhaps there could be a stronger indication of where it is and what it's for, however, as the 'road' doesn't appear wide enough for big vehicles and the handrails indicate the need for people to hold on, making it all a bit contradictory. Nice work regardless.

Overall - (5.5/10)

The Winner: Vector

Congratulations. You get a 'Tri Hard' banner (made by... erm... you. ;p). Hooray :)

The Rules:

:r: You may use whatever software you desire to model in.
:r: This challenge will last until the end of April.
:r: Concept sketches are advised and encouraged. Get into a 3D mindset and draw your object from several angles to get a feel of how it pieces together. Feel free to post them in here for feedback.
:r: Final entries are submitted in the form of a final render and an unsmoothed wireframe. The wireframe will prevent cheating and the 'cleanliness' of the mesh will also be a factor when deciding the winner.
:r: You may post as many WIPs as you like in this thread, both renders and wireframes, in order to get help from your peers. This is encouraged. The whole point of these activities is to get better by giving and receiving help.
:r: Clearly state which is your final render when the contest is coming to a close. If you do not then it will be assumed that the last picture you posted before the deadline is your final submission.
:r: Texturing and lighting are not required. Feel free to light and texture your models but know that it will have no bearing on the winning entry. Judging is based on modelling skills alone.
:r: You may enter as many times as you like.

Prizes:
The prizes, courtesy of Vector are as follows:

When you win one, wear it with pride. ;)

Spaceship.

Here's a challenge that you can really get your teeth into. Simply put, build a vehicle that can travel through space.

It can be something you've designed yourself, or something already designed by someone else. It can be as big or as small as you like. I'm leaving it as vague as possible so you can do what you like. :)

Perhaps an amalgamation of some famous spaceships in pop culture. The enterprise mixed with an X-Wing, maybe. I'm going to emphasize the need for both reference material and concept art. There are blueprints for lots of fictional spaceships online if you need them.

Remember: spaceships don't -have- to be big metallic tin-cans. There's more than one sci-fi show out there that has travellers journeying through space in the belly of a living creature...

Good luck and be sure to ask if you have any questions. Enjoy!

I used to play Robot Arena 2. You could build your own 3d robot with all the weapons and protections and wheels you wanted. Usually, it ended up either 100% simple and functional, kicking the ass of every other robot or 100% creative, losing 9 fights out of 10

For this spaceship, I don't care if it flies straight, wins a space dogfight or any such unimportant detail. My spaceship is gonna be like nothing you've ever seen before or hope to ever see again

dammit I'm a bit rusty at this... Is there any way to select 4 vertexes and creating a face connecting them all? Or 2 and create and edge? Or select 2 or more edges to create a face?

I'm working in Maya, by the way. Appreciate the help

I plan on joining in on this once my finals are through. It ends whenever Yembles wants it to end, so it could be a month or two after enough people enter.

Hey Candraw (what's your real name btw?).
Sign up at 3DBuzz and download the Maya Beginner VTMs. Registration is free.
They're great for getting you started, just watch one or 2 every day to learn how Maya works,
The fun ones are at the end, the first ones are kinda boring and technical but you'll need to do them notheless.
Just bite the bullet and watch them all, you'll be glad you did.

Besides, Buzz makes learning even the most boring subjects fun ;)
