Holly crap COMLOCK that looks great, how long did that take you too draw all those. It just proves to make great animations you have to be a great drawer ;). For some reason I keep wacthing it I think it's awsome. Plus you always willing to give so much help to people Echarin: I like it and understand exactly what Comlock has said, with the minor adjustments it looks better and smoother. I think you just need to hold the feet closer to his body for just that half a second longer to get that much smoother effect. Very nice work tho looking forward to a full animation of these dudes

Latest version I just realized the arc of the first jump is horrendously wrong. Am working on it. Edit: Done I'm not 100% happy with it, but I think it's time to call it quits. Time to get started on something new. |

Here it is, something new. It's not finished yet, but I just had to post it. After your first viewing zoom in on the red guy's face and watch his face just before he jumps off. |

Hey, Echarin!--- I wanted to post up yesterday, but ran out of time. Your animation is good--- complete and consistent with the forms. I like how the big one settles his feet before the jump. Upon a closer look at the clip, you can see a few areas where more exagerration would be in order. Let's take a look at your spacing: [flash]http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y13/akpaintslinger/Help/anticipation_Scene102.swf [flash] The 'uniform' spacing creates a 'floaty' feeling when you watch the movement... there is a sense of inertia that is missing from the action. Since this fella is a ball, he is a perfect candidate for one of the most important fundamentals in animation---- Squash & Stretch / Anticipation!! Let's look at some real-life examples of this principle: Thanks to a brilliant fellow by the name of Harold Edgerton, we can be certain that squash & stretch (S&S) and slow in/out exist! Ol' Doc Harold managed to capture still photographs of fast-moving objects by placing a stroboscopic lamp (think ultra-high frequency flashes) in front of objects. When the speed of the flash synchronized with that of the object in motion, it would appear to slow down and then stop. This illusion is called temporal aliasing. By God, did he get some amazing shots: ![]() A football in mid-kick. (look at that compression!) A bullet flying through an apple. ![]() Edgerton also invented the rapatronic camera, which allows us to take pictures such as this. (you can really get a sense about the principle of slow in/slow out, here) Now!--- let's see what some real-life inspired exagerration will do for our balls! The S&S combined with the slow-in / slow-out creates a liveliness in both balls that didn't exist beforehand. By pushing the envelope with their forms, if only for just a frame or two, you give them the illusion of recieving and releasing a greater amount of energy. Of course, all animations don't require this amount of S&S... but you will notice it to some degree in just about every feature animation out there. |

Wow, awesome explanation akpaintslinger! here's another traditional walkcycle. It's not entirely finished yet, so the upperbody is still flickering. (32 drawings. 12 fps) |

Commies hand on frame 33 Pretty good man. Though his feet tend to go a bit too knifelike on the upstep. They seem a bit smaller in the air then grow bigger when they acutually touch down onto the ground (especially on the left foot). The feet also seem to jerk just as they touch down onto the ground, slightly breaking the fluid motion you have when they are "airborne" or "sliding" over the floor. Not very noticible though, I might just be nitpicking at this point. brilliant work.

Thanks for all the comments=) thanks for the crits Antiseal=). I aggree with all of them. Lot's of things change in size in this one. And yes, the feet are acctually getting bigger when they touch the ground. I use to put the the previous paper and rotate it exactly in the same angle of the previous feet so there's a BIG difference in the size there^^ I just hoped it wouldent be to noticeable=P You have a sharp eye! =D Zwickel: For traditional animation, all I do is animate the keys first, then the breakdowns. Then i fill in the inbetween frames at the end. Just as I would do in flash. But here's the difference If I have drawing nr 1, and 3. And I want to draw the one inbetween (2): ![]() I would have to change the order into this(and turn on the backlight): ![]() then I turn of the light again, and put it in the correct order to see how it works out. I'll also tighten the inbetweendrawing more up, because I dont finish it completly when I have the light on. ![]() And another difference with traditional animation compared to digital is that you have to keep controll of all the papers and give them numbers. You also have to draw timecharts so you'll be able to know where to put your inbetween drawings. Ofcourse you could draw timecharts on digital animation too, but there its more easier to have controll of the frames and see what your doing. So thats why I usally dont draw timecharts on digital animation. I guess that's it. I learned all this from Animators Survival kit (exept for the lightboard inbetween thing. I found that on the net somewhere) So everything else is explained in the book (timecharts, spacing, inbetween, X-sheet,walkcycles and so on) That old Videotutorial you're asking about is still online, but I never posted it on the webpage=) It's realy crappy, its all just a big joke realy ^^ here it be: http://www.comlock.net/stuff/lightboardtutorial.wmv |

With this one Cal try having the guy sort of jump from one leg if you know what I mean. Try just doing a little jump yourself and you will notice that we generally jump off of one leg and land on the other. Disregard this if you were going for a desired effect.
