I started up an idea for a prequel to that other story of mine. It takes place over 4 centuries before the events of Hyra, and details the creation of those pesky Zealots. However, learning from previous reactions, I'm releasing it in short installments rather than those big ol' walls of text that nobody reads. Enjoy.

Oracle

Assignment

Saul, a young but experienced priest, is performing the initiation ritual with a priestess-in-training. (That’s ritualistic sex to you guys.) They’re in a dark, stone room, dimly lit with a few candles. Biblical runes litter the walls of the room. But they are not visible in the dark. The bed is merely a mattress made up of layered fur sheets and a fur pillow. The priestess is naked, but Saul still has on his clothes and keeps his hood on, as well as a long cloth wrapped over his face to keep his identity secret. (Off to a raunchy start, aren’t we?)

The two complete the ritual and Saul congratulates the young woman on completing her 15-year long training, and finally becoming a full-fledged Runic priestess. Saul exits the room out into a large, beautiful but dimly lit chapel as the priestess gets dressed.

Upon removing the cloth wrappings, Saul engages in a conversation with High Priest Lorelei about the newly graduated priests and priestesses, which quickly shifts to a discussion about an incident in the nearby city of Scalra that Lorelei wants Saul to investigate.

According to Lorelei, an underground blood feud has been going on between two pariah (the old term for gypsy) clans. Saul knows limited information on the situation, but Lorelei continues. In order to keep from supporting one pack over another, the Runic Church has remained strictly uninvolved throughout the conflict. However, one pack has uncovered a manuscript of the White Order, a cult of witches (practicing religious heretics) that has proven to be a hazardous enemy to the Runic Church in the past.

Lorelei assigns Saul to look into the matter because he has rarely ever entered the city, and is thus unknown as a church official in Scalra. He must also retrieve the manuscript from the pariah clan and return it to the church. He is tasked with this investigation while concealing the Church’s involvement in the matter.

Saul changes from his priests’ cloak into a shabby, gray cloak and leaves for Scalra while Lorelei begins a ceremony for the newly initiated priests and priestess in a large, rune-covered henge in the fields by the church.

If I could actually get some constructive feedback, that'd be nice too.

I haven't read the other story, but this one seems to have a pretty sound plot.

It's hard to give constructive criticism on an outline though, so i'll ask a few questions.

what is the main characters motivation?

is the priestess going to be developed into a full fledged character with actual plot importance, or is she does a little sex appeal to get the reader interested?

If the priestess is just a one time character, then what will her appearance and personality be like? By describign one character you can set the mood for the entire story, she could be a cold bitch that seems very emo-ish(I'm hoping you know what I mean) if you want the story to be sort of noir, something thought provoking and bleak. If you want the story to be a "happily ever after" thing, why not make her and innocent ditz(sp?). The are of course levels in between gothic/emo and cheerleader. Also, if you want to contrast some sort of good and evil in the story try setting a good girl against a distubing background, or vice-versa.

Will your main character remain passive throughout the story, never changing his thoughts or views on things all the way to the end? Or will he go through some sort of life altering epiphany that completely changes his views, be it light side to dark side, choosing the girl over his own life, or any other of that cliche stuff. If you plan to have the character's opinion play a big role, then have him state it early on, or dilute it through his comments and actions.

How much level of detail do you plan on putting into your backgrounds and character descriptions? I personally feel disapointed in an author when he spends more time describing an unimportant person or background than an important one, or simply putting more effort and length into one description than all the others, I try to keep my descriptions constant so that if I write five descriptive paragraph for one main character, I write a number close to that for another. (this is just my opinion, don't take it if ya don't want it.)

I can think of a few more, but I haven't got the time. I hope this helped, and remember it's just my opinion, not something I'm saying you have to do.

She's just there to demonstrate some of the religious customs of the Church. She has no other involvement in the story.

What? She could be neither. She's a priestess. They're selected for the apprenticeship at the age of 4 before going into an extremely rigorous course of scholastic, artistic, theological, and combative training that lasts 15 years. An emo bitch or crazy ditz would never be able to be a priest.

The outline of the first part is good, gives an insight to the strange customs of this church and you've given the main character a very set task. Can't wait to see how this extends

Dante

The city of Scalra is pretty much the Hyran parallel to Venice. Canals replace roads and it was founded as hiding places for rogues and bootleggers. Overtime, the city progressed as a respectable place of trade and aristocracy. In the older districts, however, crime and grit still dominate the citizens. The pleasant architecture is misleading from the shady nature of the city. The only proverbial light in the dark is the authority and influence of the Church within the city.

Saul arrives in a dark back alley one night by boat. He is greeted by a charismatic thief named Dante, whom he pays with a few silver coins. Dante has served as an inside informant to the Church regarding the blood feud. Though a shady figure, Dante is the only one Saul can trust without blowing his cover. He finds lodging for Saul in a basement to a winery and arranges to contact him in the morning.

The next day, Saul wakes up to find a small pariah girl watching him. Discomforting as it is, Saul waves it off as just children’s curiosity with strangers. The small girl tells him that her uncle is waiting for him upstairs.

Upstairs, Dante is waiting for Saul with the girl’s mother. Dante openly introduces his Saul to his sister as “a spy from the Church.” The woman seems relieved rather than suspicious and it’s revealed by Dante later that her son was killed by the rival pack. Saul tells Dante he is not interested in fighting a war. He’s just interested in getting the manuscript. Dante simply shrugs him off, saying that if that’s the case, the Church wouldn’t be paying him to sell them secrets.

The Market

Dante leads Saul to a market place and talks to him about various strategies to infiltrate the other pack whilst he pickpockets and cons several people. He retrieves a scroll of paper from his sleeve and hands it Saul. It’s a map of the waterways of the city, and several routes are marked. Dante tells him that it is a map of important hideouts and trading spots for the other pack that he had stolen a few years back. He also mentions that he’s made many copies.

Dante then notices a few pariah men wandering the market, and he quickly leads Saul away into a small alley. He warns that even if Saul is unknown by the pariahs of Scalra, he, himself, still isn’t. He takes the map back from Saul and points to a location on the map, suggesting they meet there in a few hours. Saul rolls the map back up and puts it in his bag, and the two disperse from the area in different directions.

A few hours pass and Saul reaches the rendezvous point, which consists of an old abandoned house underneath a large building. (The house and many others serve as support for the larger structure.) Dante is nowhere to be found. Upon searching the house, Saul comes across a paper that Dante left for him. The paper is a note and details the other pack.

According to the note, the leader of the pack is a middle-aged man named Virgil, who acts as the ringmaster for the pack. Virgil lives in a house in the north ghetto area of Scalra, surrounded by houses belonging to his most trusted associates. He runs his coven from the house and rarely goes outside. However, his daughter Beatrice personally relays his messages to his subordinates. The note also details several of the important figures in the pariah pack and also notes certain habits or commonly visited areas by the pack. The note tells Saul he should find another shelter for the night, but is welcome to return to the winery the next day, as to avoid suspicious association with Dante. The note ends by wishing him luck. Saul pockets the note and sneaks outside.

Stalker

Saul finds a small inn around the area of the market. He spends most of his time planning his movements the next day rather than sleeping. He heads down to the tavern floor of the Inn to get a drink. He meets a barmaid who seems pretty keen on him. Being a priest, he’s inclined to be polite and not close himself off to her, despite his personal habit of keeping to himself. He asks the maid what her name is, to which she replies Beatrice.

Saul decides to spend a little more time down in the tavern, keeping to the corner, and watches Beatrice tend to the patrons. He wonders what a notable pariah figure is doing working at a lowly inn in the middle of the city when he spies her conning a patron. When the tavern dies down, Saul removes himself from the room and waits in a hallway, still watching Beatrice.

When the crowd gets small enough to keep track of everyone in the room, Beatrice slips outside. Saul nonchalantly sneaks out a back door and spies on her as she changes in an alley from her barmaid clothes into her dancer clothes. She leaves the alley and meets up with two pariah men and walks home. Saul returns to his room and gets some sleep.

The next day, Saul and Dante are waiting at the side of the marketplace. Saul mentions his acquaintance with Beatrice the night before, to which Dante confirms her as Virgil’s daughter. Dante warns Saul not to let his guard down around her, saying she’s a clever con artist and is backed up by many of her coven.

Confrontation

Saul then notices something flying through the air at them. He pulls Dante down, narrowly saving him from a knife spinning through the air. The knife sticks into the pillar Dante was leaning on. Dante pulls the knife out from the stone and signals two pariah men near him. The men bear throwing knives and retaliate to a group of men who had evidently attacked Dante.

People in the market place scream and duck for cover. Dante and Saul swiftly maneuver their way through the crowd. Dante tells Saul that he needs to get ready for some combat. Without saying a word, Saul unsheathes a beautifully crafted short sword from under his cloak.

Dante’s allies clash with the attackers, fighting more like brawlers than swordsmen. Men of both factions soon bear knives and duke it out in a chaotic knife fight. People dash out of the way as pariah men rush to meet one another in violence. Saul rolls between two panicking pedestrians up to an enemy pariah and forces his blade through the man’s belly, taking him by surprise.

Dante swerves about the crowd and pulls a dagger from a scabbard strapped to his leg. Utilizing a strange fighting style reminiscent of break-dancing, he knocks a combatant to his feet and slashes his throat.

Saul pulls his blade out of the man’s body and dodges a crack from an enemy pariah using a deadly whip. The man swings the whip forward once more, wrapping it around Saul’s leg and pulling his leg out from under him. The man pulls a blade out from his sleeve and makes a move to stab Saul, who sweeps his leg around, pulling the whip with it, and shifts the man’s balance. Saul reaches up and grabs the man’s wrist and twists it, forcing him to drop the knife. Saul slashes the whip with his sword and frees his leg before cutting the man down with his blade.

Dante yells at Saul to watch out. Saul turns to see a knife spinning handle over tip at him. Saul bends back to dodge. The blade skims past his shoulder, barely nicking him. Dante picks up a stone mason’s hammer that was lost on the ground during the panic and throws it into the face of the man who’d thrown the knife at Saul. The force shatters the man’s skull and he falls back off of the street and into the canal water.

Enemy pariahs appear on several rooftops overlooking the market. Some descend to the streets as others just throw weapons at their opponents from their high positions. Though aided by friendly reinforcements, Saul, Dante, and another member of his pack race out of the marketplace down an alley. Several members of the enemy pack give chase.

Cheryls right, this would look great visualy. Have you ever considered, if you can't make an animation out of it, to make a graphic nocel instead? It wouldn't give away clues as easily and would suit your style so well. In fact my mouth is watering just think about it ^_^

The Back Alleys

Dante and Saul head into the back alleys. They head into an alley with a dead end and Dante whistles. Saul turns around and gets his sword ready. Their enemies close in and corner them in the alley, outnumbering them 3 to 1.

The alley limits their movement, and they can only come in 3 at a time if they really squeeze themselves together. One man charges in with two long daggers, but he clearly underestimates Saul, who cuts him down before he gets more than 10 steps in. The remaining 5 get sniped down by arrows. Saul looks up to see 3 men with bows standing on the rooftops overlooking the alley. Dante compliments the archers and goes to search the bodies for any valuables, commenting to Saul that it’s “just another day in Scalra.”

Saul begins to loot the bodies as well when, suddenly, the man below him jumps up to his feet, pulling the arrow from his wound, and swipes a hidden pendant from Saul and runs out of the alley. The pendant is evidence of Saul’s priesthood, and if the pariahs get a hold of it, the Church’s secrecy will vanish. Saul races after the man through the alleyways.

The Chase Scene

The man runs through the streets and runs up a stairway leading to a house door. He leaps off of it onto a clothes line. Saul throws a knife into the air and it cuts the line. The man falls to the ground, but lands and rolls. In a single motion, the man propels forward from the roll off his legs and dashes further through the streets. Saul pursues him.

The man comes across the canal separating the street and the marketplace. Not stopping to look around, the man keeps running and leaps over the water, extending his arms out to land on the ground and using them to propel him forward without his feet ever touching the street. He ducks and turns through the crowd. Right behind him, Saul jumps from the street onto a slowly passing boat, and then to the other side. The jump causes the front end of the boat to lower below the water level for a short amount of time and lose balance. As he lands on the side of the marketplace, the boat capsizes and the rower falls into the water.

Saul weaves through the crowd, still pursuing the pariah thief. The pariah jumps up and kicks off the back of a merchant in the crowd and up on top of a produce stand. Saul brandishes a decent-sized dagger from his sleeve and throws it like a boomerang at the stand. The dagger doesn’t slice through the support beam so much as it crashes through it, toppling the roof of the stand. The man, about to leap up onto a balcony, comes crashing down with the roof onto the various fruits and produce.

Saul reaches the destroyed stand when the pariah emerges from the mess of squished watermelon and takes off running again. Saul sprints after him, more frustrated than ever, as the owner of the fruit stand yells curses at him.

The pariah runs toward some sort of statehouse (a tall one, sort of like a cathedral) that is still being constructed. He runs into an alley and jumps up from the sides of the walls (Jackie Chan style) onto the roofs of the buildings. Saul sees this and knows he’s not capable of mimicking it. He runs into the building at the side of the alley and rapidly ascends the stairs. He reaches out of a window and grabs the exterior lintel of the window frame. He swings his legs out the window, over his head, and onto the roof, using the momentum to pull the rest of his body onto the rooftop.

Saul continues his chase after the fleeing pariah over the rooftops. The pariah, who’d stopped to catch his breath, is two rooftops ahead of Saul. Saul leaps over an alley and lands in a roll, attempting to do the same to the next space between buildings. The pariah books it across the buildings, leaping more gracefully than Saul and the chase continues.

The pariah reaches the edge of the construction site and leaps off the roof onto the side of the scaffolding. Saul attempts to do the same but slips on a loose brick and falls short, fortunately landing on a pariah awning above a shop door. Saul jumps down and races to the side of the building and starts rapidly climbing the scaffolding after the pariah, who is now ascending the wooden support grid up to the top of the structure.

The pariah stops climbing for a second to pull a concealed knife from his vest and throws it down at Saul. Saul barely dodges as it nicks his right bicep, holding on the scaffolding with only one hand. He regains his form on the scaffolding and continues to rapidly climb the grid.

Saul reaches the top shortly after the pariah does, and chases after him on the flat, wooden catwalks. Saul suddenly dives and rolls on the wooden plank, grabbing a rope that is attached to the wooden scaffold that the pariah is on. Saul furiously yanks the rope and one side of the wooden plank disconnects with the rest of the catwalk. The pariah falls down and lands on the scaffold below him.

Saul jumps down onto the same wooden board and attacks the thief with his short sword. The thief recovers just in time and dodges the attack. He brandishes a dirk and the two duel on the loose scaffold boards. It is a balancing act as much as it is combat.

The pariah jumps up from the board and grabs a support beam above him, and kicks Saul in the face. He uses his momentum to climb onto the board above him as Saul saves himself from falling off of the structure and down to his death. Saul climbs back onto the board and up the support beam after his foe.

The pariah gets to the edge of the scaffolding and looks down to see a long drop over the harbor of the city. He backs away from the dead end just as Saul charges from behind and tackles him off the edge. While falling down from the structure, Saul punches the pariah in midair and seizes the pendant from him. He kicks off of the pariah’s body and uses his cloak as a buffer to slow his fall (though by no means drastically). The pariah crashes into the water and the forces causes his spine to snap. Saul lands on the pariah’s body and plunges into the blue harbor water. Badly injured, he weakly swims to the docks and passes out.

I like this paragraph Mal for a number of reasons
1: it's full of a lot of energy and invites the reader to depict the scene. Because of this it would make great looking animation (though extremely difficult to animate at the same time)
2: I really like how Saul isn't made super human. He's in an unfamiliar environment and so has disadvantages and you show these. He isn't as comfortable or as skilled as leaping around rooftops as the Pariah and so adds realism. Especially when you mention he was badly injured when most people would have done a cheap move where the cloak (not designed to be a parachute) works perfectly against all the odds.
3: It has purpose, he's not running for something that could be easily replaced and so making the point of risking his neck pretty useless but he's basically fighting to protect his identity and therefore protect the mission. Adding a random chase scene for the sake of having one would have ruined it, this one fits perfectly :)

and that's all for now

Why thank you, Pillow.

Beatrice

Saul awakes in the basement of the winery. He’s badly bruised, but the only bone broken is his left forearm; evident by a splint and cast the pariahs had fitted for him while he was unconscious. The young girl descends the stairs and hands him a loaf of bread for him to eat and tells him he’s been out for two days. Saul walks upstairs and places a few coins on the table in return for the family’s hospitality. The woman tells him that Dante was captured by the rival pack when trying to retrieve Saul from the dock. She also mentions that the pack has become suspicious of an attack and has abandoned all their previous meeting grounds and hiding spots, rendering Saul’s map useless.

The scene switches to dusk. Saul is waiting in an alley by the church in Scalra. A female initiate sneaks into the alley and signals him with a bird call. The two meet and the initiate hands him a small, red egg wrapped in a cloth. Saul blesses her and the initiate leaves. Saul stares out onto the city skyline.

Saul is then shown sitting in the back of the inn tavern once more. Beatrice again seems attracted to him, and approaches him. We switch scenes to them having sex in Saul’s room. Saul wakes up later that night, alone in his room. He checks under the mattress to find all his important items (like the runic pendant). He collects them and then searches the belongings he had put off to the side on the dresser. We see from Saul’s face that everything is in order.

Saul exits his room in the early morning. He sees a red hawk soaring above the skyline of the city. He follows the bird as it turns corners in the sky. The bird eventually wanders to the North ghetto area of the city and lands on the rooftop of a run down residential building. Saul marks the building on the map and leaves to enter the catacombs beneath the city.

Saul makes his way through the underground tunnels to the location of the marked house. Further down the tunnel, guarding a secret passage up to the house is a gruff-looking pariah. He is half asleep, but occasionally glances down both ways of the tunnel. Saul creeps his way down the tunnel. The pariah glances over in his direction, to which Saul evades by hiding in a crack in the wall.

Deciding that he is sure to be detected if he continues to sneak down the tunnel by foot, Saul climbs up the side of the tunnel up to a small ledge that extends down the length of the tunnel. He slowly makes his way down the ledge until he is directly above the guard. Saul turns to face the stone wall and wedges his foot into a large crack in the wall. Using the support from the crack, Saul silently lowers the rest of his body, upside down, behind the guard. With quick reflexes, he grabs the guard’s head and pulls it back, exposing the neck. He then forces a knife into the guard’s windpipe, killing him instantly.

Saul drops down from the ledge and slowly makes his way up the passage.

Infiltration

Saul finds himself in the basement of the house above. He looks around, searching for any clues as to where the manuscript is, or the manuscript itself. He makes his way up the stairs and sneaks into a bedroom on the second floor.

He sees the red hawk at the window, toiling away at a coin bag, trying to rip it open. Saul steps into the room and walks over toward the window. Suddenly, Beatrice attacks him with a knife from behind. She holds the knife to his neck, but Saul trips her leg out and gets the knife away from her, kicking it across the floor. He covers her mouth to stop her from alerting anyone else in the house and ties her to the bedpost. Saul goes over to help the hawk open the bag.

Beatrice demands to know how he found the hideout, as the rival pack hadn’t been able to locate it for years. (They’ve continuously relocated.) Saul tells her of a species of hawk known as the Red Hawk. It is called the Deadly Mother by hunters and woodsmen. He explains that red hawk eggs give off a unique, faint scent that humans can’t detect, but the mother hawk can detect the scent of her egg for miles. He continues to explain that red hawk mothers will go to anything to retrieve their eggs if lost or stolen by predators from the nest. As he is explaining all this, Saul unties the coin pouch and reveals the egg he received from the initiate. The hawk takes the egg in her talons and flies off. Saul then empties the pouch of a few coins and tells her that petty thieves are so predictable, revealing that she had stolen the pouch from Saul last night, just as he planned.

Beatrice curses Saul and slips out of her bonds, and reaches for a nearby pen to stab him with. Saul punches her in the stomach before she can reach him, and then presses a pressure point on her neck, knocking her unconscious.

Saul makes his way down the hall and peers into a room at the end. In there he sees a bound and injured Dante. Dante is asleep, and has evidentially been intensely tortured. Saul wakes him and frees him from the constraining ropes. The two men make their way up the stairs to the third floor. They find a small library and Saul insists that they search it. There he finds the manuscript: an aged, unbound pile of pages covered in writing. He rolls up the pages and stuffs them into a case on the back of his belt.

Having gotten what he had come for, (both the manuscript and Dante) Saul leads the wounded Dante down the stairs. The two make it to the basement when a pariah jumps out from behind a couple of barrels and attacks the two men with a metal bar. Saul blocks the attack with his short sword and tells Dante to go down the passage. The pariah grabs a torch from the wall and swings it at Saul, while combining attacks with his rod.

The pariah is able to repel Saul back with the torch and bar, and then sweeps his legs and knocks Saul down. Saul lands against a barrel of oil which tips over and spills oil everywhere. Saul slides his blade across the ground, covering it in the oil, and dodges a stab from the pariah. The pariah swings his torch at Saul, but Saul parries with his sword, which soon ignites on fire.

Now Saul fights more aggressively; lunging and slashing at his enemy with his flaming sword. The pariah counters one attack, but Saul dodges and slashes at the ground between them. The floor begins to light on fire. Saul swings again, only this time using the blade to scoop up the oil and splash it towards the pariah. As the blade touches the drops of oil, it ignites them and the pariah is barraged with splashes of fire.

The fire on the ground spreads across the floor. Saul takes a blow to the stomach and the arm (which is already in a cast, mind you) and crumbles to his knees in pain. The pariah is about to deliver a blow to Saul’s exposed back when Saul looks forward and sees that the pariah’s pants are soaked with the oil.

Saul quickly plunges his fiery sword into the pariah’s shin, both wounding him and lighting his pant leg ablaze. Saul jumps to his feet and flees the blazing room to meet Dante down at the end of the passage and into the tunnel. Saul plunges into the water to rinse off the oil on his clothes and sword. His blade cools and he sheathes it as he and Dante escape through the tunnel, leaving the Pariah house to burn.

Brilliant Mal, the Deadly Mother was genius. I also like how Saul used Beatrice and it wasn't just for the sake of adding something raunchy. The firefight would especially be visually rewarding: flicking flaming oil at the pariah
Can't wait to read the next update, Espen's right and this would make a brilliant (but extremely difficult) animation.

The most plotty part of the story:

The Manuscript

Saul sits at his desk in his chambers back in the abbey. His left arm is still in the cast. Saul spends countless hours day and night reading the manuscript. He occasionally writes down important notes and observations from the texts. Near the end of the manuscript, something catches his eye. Saul anxiously reads through, an intense look of realization overcomes his face. Saul urgently walks down the halls of the church to the main chapel. Saul approaches Lorelei and tells her that they have a serious issue on their hands.

In Saul’s chambers, he explains the details of the situation, citing the manuscript. The manuscript is infact the journal of one of the scribes for the White Order. Near the end of the journal, it is recorded that the White Order had attacked members of the Angels of Shade, the rival order of witches to the White Order. While they were killing the wounded survivors of the ambush, they came across an oracle.

Mention of an Oracle proves just how serious the matter is. To the Runic Church and witches, Oracles are the most valuable of all relics. They hold a deeper connection to the runes than any human can dream of, and thus can be of unmatched use to whoever possesses them.

The Manuscript describes the oracle as a young pariah girl, about the age of 16 upon capture. The last entry in the manuscript is from almost a years ago. Saul believes the oracle to be Sybil, a young pariah oracle who went missing years ago. She was the only oracle born within the last 80 years that the Church has any record of, and was completely unstable. Saul stresses how much potential power the White Order could gain from possessing the oracle.

Lorelei is just as worried that the Angels of Shade had possessed her prior to the White Order, leading to speculation of what she has already been used for. Saul argues that whatever the Angels of Shade used her for has remained hidden from the Church, but what is more important is what the White Order is attempting to do. He makes mention of an excerpt from the journal, which states that the oracle is still healing from her injuries she received from the attack. He states that they wouldn’t have been able to use her for their own gain until she was completely healed, which shouldn’t have been too long ago.

Saul even says he can predict that the White Order is going to use her to find the Draconau Scrolls and use that to unleash chaos onto Hyra. He shows Lorelei the last page of the Manuscript. The last words written on the weathered paper reads (in rune) “The Scrolls are nearly ours.”
