Okay, I was doped up on antihistamines today and I decided to figure out if earth-like gravity on a moon-sized planet is even possible. I mean, there is a certain point until an atom becomes so massive that it can't stay together for more than a few (milli/nano)seconds. At least, that we have observed so far. Given that: -The earth has a radius of 6,371.01km -The earth has a density of about 5.5 g/cc (grams per cubic centimeter) -The moon has a radius of 1,737.4km -The earth-massed moon-sized object (Brackenwood) has a gravitational acceleration of 9.8m/sec^2 Plug it and chug it, Brackenwood is about 20.2 g/cc, about 3.67 times more dense than earth. Given that the average moral mass of atoms found on earth is 40 (estimated based upon the proportions of Iron, Oxygen, Silicon, and Magnesium), this means that the average moral mass of stuff on Brackenwood is in the region of 146.8 - Slight more than Cesium or Barium. Iron is the most common metal in the universe, by far, so we can assume at least a small proportion exists on Brackenwood, probably mostly on the surface as oxides. To offset the molar mass of iron, Brackenwood would probably have a core of the more common and stable heavy metals, such as tungsten, platinum, gold, mercury, and lead. So, it is definitely in the realm of possibility for Brackenwood to exist, but it would be very unlikely at this age in the universe. It will be more probable as the universe ages and heavier elements become more common.

there was a thread like this a few years ago... someone did math trying to prove brackenwood was a physical impossibility I think. But it's cool to think about this sort of stuff, how much would the brackenwoodians weigh then? EDIT: here's the thread |

Did Adam actually define a mass and size of Brackenwood? |

no, but he's given some vague descriptions, like saying you'd be able to walk from pole to pole in a month |

The guy in that thread switched to cubic meters from cubic kilometers accidently, so according to his math, Brackenwood was 1,000 times more dense than it really would be. Edit: He also supposed a much, much tinier sphere than I did. Adam has said both "would take a month to walk pole to pole," and has also called Brackenwood "about the size of earth's moon." There's about a 1,200km difference in radius between those two statements, which is pretty darn significant. |

I've been thinking about it for the past 2 days. And this gives me somewhere to share! Yes I do have a crush on this person and I would like to develop a relationship with her. But this is how the dream went. It started in a small classroom where it seemed to be a muck up day. I was sitting with the window on my left and the love on my right. There was another girl on the other side of the table from me(One I despise). I don't remember what we were all talking about but I remember it not affecting me at all. Then the girl said 'Why don't you to have a relationship?' And before I could answer 'We are already!' was the response of my love. I just sat there staring at her, mouth open and in awe. She just nodded at me, I quickly turned to the girl who was also quite shocked and turned back. 'Really?' I asked so excitedly, she just smiled. I stood up and hugged her in the same movement. I was so happy.I hugged her and kissed her. then the girl said. 'Wow your not really good at kissing are you?' I quickly turned my head and said 'This is my first and this is love!' And soon as I turned back I riding a horse down these grassy hills with some foliage around. And guess what! The girl was on the horse as-well! With her arms around my waist the only thing between us was my shield. 'Where are we going?!' my love asked with a slight yell. 'To aid my friends in battle!' and as I said that I jumped my horse through a treeline. On the other side was some unidentifiable characters fighting some more unidentifiable charicters. So I rode into battle with her behind around my waist, swinging my sword at people as I rode through them until there were none left. I then dismounted with her and we hugged. 'Charge!' came from the guy next to me as everyone ran past the corpses and towards 5 rows of archers up on the next hill. So we grabbed each others wrists and ran after them. About 10m away from the archers I reached for my sword that wasn't there. 'Argh my sword!' 'Don't worry I have it.' said my love as she ran ahead and joined with the massacre. I ran into battle with my fists not realizing I had advanced further into the archers line that everyone else. 'Don't fire, Don't fire, Don't fire' was being screamed by their commander as all the archers were shooting upwards. 'Oh no!' I realized and I ran towards my love as I took the shield off my back. 'Look out' I yelled to everyone else as I held my shield above our heads. Arrows began falling like rain everywhere. And as soon as I knew I was hugging her in the same manner as the first time. The arrows had turned into light bouncing off some sort of disco ball or chandelier and I was standing on a hardwood floor with a deep violet glow coming off the walls. 'Are you serious?'I asked filled with joy 'Yes' she replied and put her head into my chest. I can't remember when in the dream I woke up but I did so, glowing with happiness. Even now I'm still happy about it. My guess on why the fight scene was there is because I've been reading these books she lent me on the life of a knight. Sorry about grammar. |

basically the smaller a planet like body the faster it cools during formation so the thicker the crust. the thicker the crust the less dense the planet. if it's closer to a star it won't cool as fast so it'll have a thin crust but'll be very hot. but the higher the density and the thinner the crust the more seismic activity so there'd be tectonic movement almost constantly. earth is a pretty dense planet so having even a super-dense metallic planetoid the size of the moon that has comparable surface temp (to keep the water), relative seismic activity (noted by the mountainous landscape), and has grav 1... it'd be pretty improbable. I say that because I can't think of any set of reasons that could make it happen and my girlfriend, friends, and I (they're all physicists, I was a chemistry/biochemistry major so we're not ENTIRELY stupid) used most of our lunch hour talking about it (thanks by the way! it was fun!!). if there was a way to compress a metallic core like our own to near nuclear dens then it'd be (artificially) possible... but still not probable. as a matter of fact i think i need to take a shower because of that statement. also you said moral mass a few times which... you know... i had to make a fat joke. ill save you guys the grief (= all in all though... it doesn't matter. it's fantasy. there was grass in "dinosaur" but that didn't really bother me even though there was no grass then. it's the story that matters... so it's the STORY that bothered me (= now give me some of those "antihistamines"... it's almost the weekend |

I thought it was said somewhere that brackenwood was made of water. wasnt there a brackenwood.net or something that had this kinda info? If it is indeed made mostly out of water it would probably be very difficult to reach that much mass. but the gravity does appear a bit less than earth's |

I seem to remember this exact topic like, two years ago? Adam responded saying it's only fiction. Still, much love for maths and physics.

Wow, that's a really nice dream you've got there. I think that you might want to be, and maybe should try being, her knight in shining armour, saving her from anyone who is cruel to her. But what do I know. I am 16 and I have never had a girlfriend. It's not that girls find me repulsive, but because I have never really liked anyone. That was until four years ago, on my first day at secondary school. I met a girl who I truly loved, and love even now. However she's like a model, and I'm like a janitor. Anyway, your dream reminded me of how I think of her. I want to fight for her, but the odds are against me. I think I'll watch 300 again, cause I'm going be sacrificing myself pritty soon. Anyway, good luck. Give my regards to the misses.

^By that I hope you don't mean suicide. If so I might hate you. Anyway I dreamed about her again. We were infiltrating a vampires mansion....at my local tennis courts....in the arctic with igloos everywhere. In other news I gathered enough guts to ask her out and this is how I did it. I'm not sure how but it was during English and we got to the subject of siblings and she said My little sister has been out with more guys than me and shes in year 6, I don't really mind but it's so cute!' Then my smooth words >.> Are you sure you don't want to change that?' BAM! skill there. not really, it's cute' was the response in voice that had that "let me finish" tone You know I'm known in the family as the "noble" one because I haven't gone out with anyone. You didn't get me before did you?' huh?' I was asking you out' oh...I'll think about it' the oh sounded like it was suppose to go off trail but got lost halfway by complete understanding. Then she put her head down and went back to her book. I had to ask on a Friday didn't I! Oh well now I'm stuck in suspense waiting for a response. Even if she says no I don't hope that effects us as friends. |

And then we can apply string theory to Brackenwood's parallel universes. Ok, I have no idea what I'd talking about now.

for all we know a place almost identical to brackenwood could just as well exist although it is not possible for us to ever visit or see it since their is an infinite number of planets. think about that old saying "if an infinite number of monkeys on a infinite number of typewriters typed for an infinite amount of time they would eventually type up the complete works of William Shakespeare." Think about this then think Adam may actually be animating something that has already been, is or is to come. since the universe will never end (to my knowledge)if you think about it is only a matter of infinite years before brackenwood is to become a reality. |

Lol thats awesome Hope i can visit brackenwood someday then. if Adam lets me of course also what i said before is pretty random don't take it literally because you know i might have uncovered some major cover up in the C.I.A. Actually I'm pretty sure a creature from brackenwood already came to earth i dunno i think they called it Roswell or something.

Dont forget that he talked bout us, not bitey. dont forget the yu yu (you can see the stars rotate as bitey is going super-sonic-speed. It would take him about 40 sec. |

What stops Backenwood from having a core other than iron? I mean, yeah it's a tiny planet, but if the core and the layers between that and the crust were dense enough, it could theoretically have gravity similar to earth's. Now of course, I didn't say that was likely, but you never know. |

I recall that as well and since then I've always imagined Brackenwood being somewhat similar to the planet Naboo from Star Wars. Lush and green on the surface with water (and aquatic wildlife) throughout the core. I reckon that'd be an interesting episode "Journey to the centre of Brackenwood"

im actully hoping something will emerge from under brackenwoods surface at some point. This is a very interesting thing you have done Ang. I tried looking around to figure out if there was any places like on the edge of a worm hole where gravity is defied ... Of course we dont exactly know what a worm hole is yet. The theory of course is that it will take us to other places in the universe or to other moments in time. A place like a black hole is a place of such density and yet they belive that when your watching something enter a black hole it would go on for a very long time ... years .... maybe hundreds of years depending on how big it is yet if you were entering a black hole it would seem like seconds as your body and every other mass would be crushed so black holes would have no effect on. There was one subject that did intrest me and it was a place on earth in which gravity is defied. In kenya (cant remember exactly just type what im saying into a search engine im sure it will come up) When you pour on the ground of the mountain water actully streams up hill. Basicly as far as i am concerned were a young species of intelegence and we havent even gotten anywhere near to figureing out what could exist within our universe. Who knows maybe worm holes go to another space within the universe that will defy all aspect within our present location of study. As far as im concerned ANYTHING can happen! |
