I'm sure my Final Fantasy 9 fan fic readers would be raping me with sticks right now, seeing as I haven't updated my other fan fics in over a year. -_-" But I had a dream last night that made me say, "Gods, I gotta get this down!" But being a dream, the idea behind it makes little to no sense, though I still like it. This is a story about the origins of Brackenwood, and the origins of Bitey and quite unexpected. Like I said, the dream told me. If at any point you just want to say "Kikinak, please. Just stop." that's fine with me. But please, do not be rude about it. I'll actually put the origin of Brackenwood in this first chapter, just because I don't know where else it would fit.

So without further ado, I give you the first chapter to 'Yuyu's Curse'.

Chapter 1

"Thomas! Time for dinner!"

From the piles of books, a young boy looked up at his mother's call. "Coming mama!"

Thomas hopped off of his bed and, being the clumsy boy he was, took the bedspread down with him, scattering the field guides and storybooks across the floor. Thomas couldn't have been more than six years old, but his fascination with books and reading was insatiable. He was very clever, always taking things apart with his mum to see how they worked, asking question upon question, most of which were "Why?". Any other parent would have simply gotten annoyed, but Thomas was blessed, and cursed, with a field biologist as a mother and an engineer as a father. Blessed, because they were glad to teach him all they could and answer any question, but cursed because poor Thomas hardly ever saw them. His mother was often overseeing the development of live and crops on the two nearby farm planets, Wheatenwood and Brackenwood, as well as testing water qualities and control on Dropwood.

For you see, the planet that Thomas and his family inhabited was a dead planet. There was no longer a wilderness, only small groves of half dead trees that were saved as resources. The water was filthy and to drink it was certain death. This had been the way of the Innocelsius for almost two centuries. The leader's recognized the need to colonize new worlds in order to save the human race, so began exploring nearby planets. Two of them had conditions suitable for living, with rich soil and water. The third planet, however, did not have enough surface area to colonize, most of the planet being covered in water. The fourth planet was also unsuitable, being nothing more than a dry, barren rock.

One leader realized the massive project it would be to transport the human race, make new homes and establish a steady source of food. "Why don't we simply use the planets as our resources?" the leader asked the others. "The human race will live here, but we have the techonology to ferry water and crops and trees from other planets. We are already trading with the planet Io in order to keep our people alive, and they are much further away, and more expensive."

So it was decided the four planets would each serve a purpose in caring for the human race. Wheatenwood was sewn with crop seeds, and provided a home for cattle, chickens and other farm animals to feed the humans. The next in line, Brackenwood, was sewn with trees to become a forest planet. Though the Inncelsians still forests at this time, the leaders knew it would take several centuries for the trees to take root and develop and provide proper building materials. The third, Dropwood, was covered in oceans, and though it was salt water the leaders built massive distilleries to provide their people with fresh water. The last, Diswood, became a landfill. The massive project of emptying the landfills and making them sanitary and livable areas for the growing human race was a fifty year project, but once it was completed, they proved to be usedul.

At the present day, the Innocelsians still survived, getting air from massive oxygen generators, food and water from the farm planets and, sadly, everyone was alright with that. They just went on living their normal lives, ignoring the fact that they had killed their planet from neglect and abuse.

"Thomas, there you are," his mother sighed, sitting down at the table as Thomas took his seat at the the end. "Didn't you run a comb through your hair this morning?"

The young boy reached up in an attempt to smooth this light brown hair, though not to much avail. Even though it was in a neat little bowl cut, there were always select pieces that rebelled against the standard form of the rest of his hair. "Sorry mama..." he said, even though he had run a comb through it earlier. The stout woman to his side simply smiled warmly and continued eating the meal before him.

"Don't worry little one," she said. "Your father won't be home until late tonight..."

Thomas only gave a quiet nod in response.

"You know, you haven't missed one day of school this year," his mum said in an as a matter of factly kind of voice. The boy only gave another nod, engrossed in his meal. "And Eli's coming back from Brackenwood tomorrow morning."

"He is?" Thomas asked and looked up.

"He said he's found lots of new insects and animals, might even have brought a few samples back." she said with a smile. "You want to go, don't you?"

Unable to hide his smile, Thomas nodded enthusiastically.

"It's settled then," she chuckled, clapping her hands together. "You'll be going with me to see how Eli's doing when he gets back."

"Thanks ma!" Thomas replied, quickly finishing off his dinner. "Do you want help with dishes?"

"No, I've got it. Not too many pots and pans tonight," she said and stood, picking up her plate and then Thomas's. "You can grab out glasses though, come along."

Glad to help, the boy picked up the remaining dishes and followed his mother from the dining room into the kitchen, placing the cups in the sink. None of the rooms had a decorating scheme except for maybe mess. The kitchen table was the only piece of furniture in the dining room not covered in reports and schematics, and the kitchen counters were just as bad. Both rooms had off white walls with the usual few baby and family pictures and white tile. Thomas's mum always spoke of the day that she would get around to decorating, which was often followed by a chuckle and the comment, "And then the crust of Innocelsius cracks through and we fall to the center of the earth."

"You go ahead and finish whatever reading you're doing," she said to Thomas. "I'll be in to tuck you in after 8, alright?"

"Okay," Thomas said and scuttled off to his room, shutting the door behind him and flipping on a light. His room was the only exception as far as mess went, surprisingly. He kept his books and the small number of toys that he had fairly organized and well kempt. Not stopping a beat, he leaned over and picked up a field guide and hopped on his bed once again to read. It only took a half an hour for him to get heavy lidded and little more than that to finally drift off to sleep. His mind filled with high hopes for the next day, he dreamed of Brackenwood.

Thank you Idiot for the inspiration! It really did help. Also, I used Bitey as an example on a thread on GaiaOnline 'Can You Really Love and Unlovable Character?'. I thought it screamed Bitey. And hopefully after this fic, you'll agree.

Chapter 2

"Mama, it's cold...."

"I know little one, but we'll go inside once we spot Eli."

The two huddled together against the bitter wind, both in scarves, hats and coats on the landing strip. Several small, rounded aircrafts ferried about, many of them heading on trade routes to other planets nearby. "Is that him?" Thomas asked curiously, tugging on his mother's sleeve.

"That it is," his mum said softly and waved to the young biologist to get his attention. At one point in history, biologists coming back from exploration journeys were greeted by the press, flashing bulbs and reporters waving notepads, yelling questions in hopes of getting a glimpse at new or unusual specimens. However, the glory days of biological science had dwindled on the planet of Innocelsia, leaving the poor, young scientist with his two biggest supporters to meet him on the landing strip.

"Hi-dee ho," the young man said with a wave, his blond curly hair falling in his face as he leaned forward to greet Thomas.

"Hi-dee ho!" Thomas mimicked with a smile, craning around Eli to see the tote he dragged behind him.

"Mostly plant life, a few insects." Eli said, knowing the boy's next question. "But I'll show you once we get inside."

"We have to wait for Marco too, right?" Thomas's mother said, crossing her arms and turning her back against the wind. Eli replied with a nod.

"It's amazing how quickly life has evolved on Brackenwood," Eli said. Immediately, Thomas knew it was going to turn into a grown-up discussion and decided to explore the barren landing strip, or at least the ship that Eli had come from. With Marco on his way, Thomas didn't worry much about getting in trouble, knowing his way to the ship and back to his mum. As he began walking, Thomas stopped, hearing a feeble grunting and squeaking nearby. He was safe distance away from Eli and his mother as he steered away from his planned path to find the origin of the sound.

He gave a small gasp, met by the strange sight of a yuyu, struggling to her feet, ears down and tiny body shaking.

"You must have fallen off the tote..." Thomas said, holding his hand out. Her eyes flashed dangerously, mouth moving at rapidfire as she spoke in a mysterious language. Undeterred, Thomas offered his hand again. "I...I won't hurt you."

She shivered and grumbled to herself, stepping onto his hand, looking at him square in the eye. Thomas blinked and smiled slightly. "Hello there," Thomas greeted.

"Hu-man," the yuyu murmured bitterly, as though trying out her english for the first time.

"Th-that's right," Thomas said with a small chuckle. "And what are you?"

"Yuyu."

"Is...that what you're called? You-you?"

Thomas recieved a nod in response.

"You're from Brackenwood?" he asked. Another nod.

"Humans destroy trees, kill animals."

"Pardon?"

"You must be stopped."

"Stopped? But...I-I haven't done anything..."

The yuyu grinned like a cheshire cat, bemused with the boy's innocence.

"All humans are the same. Yuyu will catch any human on Brackenwood, put to work in mines!"

At this point, Thomas was beginning to get frightened, but still understood that Brackenwood was her home, and that one day it would be deforested.

"Is that how you'll keep the humans away?" Thomas asked, wondering what this little creature was planning.

"No! You keep humans away!" she demanded, stomping her foot on Thomas's palm.

"I can't do that..." he said, looking defeated. "I want to help you save your home, but---"

"Good!" the yuyu said, crossing her arms, a devillish look portrayed in her now yellow eyes. Raising a hand, she threw a ball of shadow into the boy's face, causing Thomas jerk back and cough, nearly dropping the yuyu.

"You are a blessed and cursed human," she said, gripping onto his thumb for dear life as he coughed violently. Once he got over the surprise, all his attention went back to the small creature. "You help us, blessed with understanding. I give gift, help you live on Brackenwood."

"Live on Brackenwood?" he repeated, eyes widening.

"But cursed, because you will be alone. Your family no help, nothing." the yuyu murmured, her eyes dancing between shades of yellow and orange, an occasional red flash coming to sight.

"Why can't my mum help? She wants to save Brackenwood too...."

The yuyu laughed at this, squealing with amusement.

"She will leave you. They will all leave you."

"L-leave, what do you mean 'leave'?"

Without another word, the yuyu jumped off his palm, disappating into a plume of smoke and shot across the ground, out of sight. Thomas's arms fell, eye wide, wondering what had just happened.

"Thomas!" his mother called, running over to him. "Little one, why did you wander off like that?"

Not replying, Thomas simply threw his arms around his mother's legs, tears welling up in his eyes.

"Mama, you'd never leave me, would you?"

"Leave---why, whatever gave you that idea?" she said, smoothing his hair. "If I'm not mistaken, you're the one who left us."

Thomas looked up and sniffled. His mother heaved a sigh, taking his hand.

"Let's go see what Eli and Marco brought us, shall we?" she said, pulling him along.

"But you didn't answer my question..."

"I would never leave you," his mother said sincerely. "Just like your father never would. Now come on, before he puts them away."

Thomas seemed satisfied with that answer and regained the spring to his step, beginning to think he had imagined the tiny, shadow creature.
