Illustration Activity Series C #15

Webcomics

Objective:
Let's make a new webcomic!

Entry Format:
One page of a webcomic of your design. To qualify, it must be at least 3 panels long. Avoid going for an epic - I prefer quality over quantity. I recommend a setup -> punchline format. It can be one page from a longer story, but the action must make sense. NO PRE-EXISTING WEB COMICS. For example, Gobi would not be able to post MoreLikeBlue.

Due Date:
All entries must be in by May 31st 2008, Midnight EST.

Advice:

 • Pay attention to your frames - the way you arrange them will tell the reader how to read your page. You need not use square, conventional frames either. Do away with frames all together if it suits you!
 • Sketch the whole page before you draw - how the frames fit together as a whole is just as important as the action that takes place on each individual frame.
 • Use tone, color, and saturation as ways of leading your viewer's eye to the action.

Examples:
VGCats
Perry Bible Fellowship
Lackadaisy
MoreLikeBlue
xkcd
Stargazed
Base17
(Suggest more in the thread to put here!)

Materials:
Comic Layout Tutorial (.rar)

Fabulous Prizes!!
The winner will recieve an awesome banner signature by Humbleego. With each competition you win, you move up successively in level.

Rank 1 - The Pencil

Rank 2 - The Pen

Rank 3 - The Brush

Rank 4 - The Non-Photo Blue Pencil

and the grandaddy of them all...
Rank 5 - The Wacom Stylus

I started on something for this. It's half finished at the moment but I'm finding it hard to get motivated to finish it.

You guys can post works-in-progress for critique, or dump some ideas if you're having trouble getting started.

To clarify: "Punchline" in comic slang doesn't necessarily mean the payoff in a joke - just payoff in general. It can be a very sad punchline.

It's cool. The forum runs through cycles, and recently the WDA has been filling the role of illustration competitions. Maybe it's time to retire the IC's (At least for a while).

Or maybe this is a sign to step up on the animation competions. Perhaps make it a bi-yearly thing?

I'll be unposting this illustration comp for now, no winner declared. Feel free to keep posting (like Christ muffin did) if you just want to do the activities for the hell of it. Heck, check out the archives and do one of them. Some of the early illustration competitions were really cookin'.

Over and out. :)

Curses I meant to post something for this comp bu oh well. I'll post a late entry later.. but they're probably not gonna be as good as the one Mr. Comlock did.

Oh and those doctor related webcomics are hilarious by the way. :D
