I came across this news story on John K's blog.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/11/business...r=1&oref=slogin

A few choice words:

Quote:

“I love classic Mickey, but he needs to evolve to be relevant to new generations of kids,” Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, said in an interview.

Quote:

At KidsWB.com, which is rolling out a revised site over the summer, the studio will let people customize Looney Tunes characters as they see fit.

“You want a dark, Goth version of Tweety Bird? Have at it,” said Lisa Gregorian, executive vice president for worldwide marketing at Warner Brothers Television.

Where's a puking smiley when you need it?

I found this in the comments on John K's blog, and it needs to be said:

Quote:

Bill Hicks was right. "Kill yourselves ( marketers ). There's no rationality for what you do, you are lowering the standards of this planet, you are fucked and you are fucking us, it's the only rational thing to do: kill yourself".

Probably with us sitting on our porches yelling at the darn kids that come on our lawns with their cell phones and their iPods and their High School Musical sequals, when back in my day we had to be creative and anime was made in Japan...

Except we'll all be in out late 20's to 30's instead of our 60's and 70's like the last few generations.

Bleegs has an awesome illustration he did that described the market perfectly that involved the old and newer bugs. This has been brought up on this forum before but is definitely worth puking in your mouth twice over.

And that Bill Hicks quote is spot on... Bless his soul

That's exactly what shouldn't happen. Mickey Mouse is iconic, but he lacks the fun and personality that would be needed to make a feature length movie (or even 10 minutes) entertaining enough to sit through.
And such words should always feature the following condition:

Executives: hands-off! Creatives: free reign!

Well they took Goofy and gave him a son for Goof Troop which developed into A Goofy Movie. One of my favorite movies as a kid. I think you can work with any character... you just need the right idea and the right people to work on it.
