What is wrong with random battles?; Help me settle an argument.

I'm currently arguing with a friend of mine about a project I want to head into. I wanted to make a fight scene, a good one, standalone, no storyline, had a good idea, have good choreography, animation experience, art, I'm set, however my friend says that alot of people do those things. Says stuff like stick fights and sprites, I protested that I've never seen a good one.

I couldn't put this on Newgrounds, quite frankly they aren't as artistically intelligent, but I really want to know, if a standalone fight scene, no sticks, good choreography, good EVERYTHING, a good idea, no storyline, how would that be bad? I know it's not common, not a good one anyway, Cause I haven't seen a very good one before on the internet (newgrounds anyway). But my friend promises me that it's not existant, because artists after a certain skill level agree with him, that storyline is of grave importance.

I still think that is untrue, that a good fight scene, or chase scene, anything like that would still be good without a storyline.

Having at least some kind of set-up for the fight (something that tells us about the fighters, who they are and why they're fighting, give them maybe just a sliver of personality) can improve on the scene in a number of ways.

You definitely don't need it though, and if you'd rather not do it then no-one's forcing your hand.

So it seems that you and your friends ideas of "Art" are different.
You think that if something is well animated it can be art. At least that's what I get from you've said and that your friend thinks it has to have a storyline in order to be art.

I'm a little confused about the no stick figures. Do you mean film yourself and put animation over top? or full body animation?

I assume you mean full body animation. In which case, you are very wrong. There is plenty of great fully body animated fight scenes.
One for example would be the Fallen Angel Series (if it ever comes out)

The teaser is on the site and displays a delicious fight scene I'm sure will leave you drooling.

I think all you need to ask yourself is what do you think is art. If a good fight scene is your idea of art, then make it.
But try not making such broad generalizations as there are no good fight scenes because it isn't on newgrounds.
Newgrounds in itself is a shithole. You said yourself they aren't artistically intelligent, so quit looking there and google it or search yahoo. Delve into the internet and the internet will give back to you. WHAT THE INTERNET GIVES IS UNCERTAIN AND COULD BE HARMFUL TO YOUR EYES. Haha, but you gotta take a chance if you wanna find anything good!
Good Luck!

Thanks for all the input, and I am aware about the fallen angel series and stuff like it, but It has a storyline, got anything without a story? I really can't physically lead up an explanation to my battle or characters...not without just flatout making a world where physics, especially light, are drastically altered. And I know that a storyline is good, so don't think I'm shut out to that idea or something, I just wanted to see what other people would have to say about this...

Thanks for the input everyone.

I think a proper fighting scene without any leads is very much possible. I would have suggested putting some random explanation in the beginning such as "YOU SLEPT WITH MY SISTER!" "RAAAAAAHHH!", but as you said, that won't fit in. Apparently there IS a background story, you just don't want to show it in the fighting animation. Personally, I think you can easily do that. And I don't agree with your friend that storylines are so important, because in such a short scene, an elaborate story would only distract.

do you mean stuff like this? http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/430990

that kind of fight scene? or do you mean like a full on just action animation (like fallen angel)
i disagree with you that there arent any good ones because many of them are actually quite complex and well animated little pieces of action (heres another good on' http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/404229 )

just because something doesnt have "purpose" (storyline) doesnt mean it cant be great. i always disagree with friends on this when it comes to movies. for example i have a friend who hated transformers cuz all it was was a bunch of special effects, personally i thought that movie was great. it was indeed a bunch of special effects, some really well done special effects and it was entertaining as hell. if your purpose in making this fight scene is to entertain people, well then make it cuz if its good thats what itll do.

also... the whole madness series is really a big fight scene with little to no story, but its extremely well animated and extremely fun to watch.
