Wicked has been my favorite book for about seven years now. Not this January but the one before I saw the touring show. It gave me chills, it was so good, and both Popular and No Good Deed are among my favorite Broadway tunes. As far as story lines go, I think I prefer the book, but comparing books to musicals is like comparing apples to oranges (or maybe just apples to grapples, but whatever). The book is much darker. The ideas of tyranny, colonization at the destruction of indigenous people, and prejudice are much, much more stressed in the book. Fiyero is also not the rich, stuck up prince they make him out to be in the musical (in the book, that's more Avaric's role). And of course, there's about three hundred pages more of detail that they couldn't put in a two hour show. If you do read it, you should read the original Wizard of Oz right before, just as a refresher. All the little things and attention Gregory Maguire paid might jump out more then (there was stuff I missed until my second or third re-reading). As a side note, I think this was the first and closest thing to literary porn I ever read -- hilarious considering the book was recommended to me by one of my high school teachers freshman year. |
