Ok, so ... I know. With Twilight, there are basically two positions we have: The Haters, and the Lovers. The people who really just do not care are left somewhere in the middle laughing hysterically at either side. x.x Literally. So, I've read what the people who despise it have to say and I've read what the people who love it have to say. Quite frankly, the haters are really on the winning side with this one. I completely agree Stephanie Meyers has no literary talent what so ever. She writes like I did in fourth grade for goodness sakes. The whole: oh, fantasy romance forever and ever XD. Do not get me wrong, I love to read those things every once in a while, as long as it is done right. Following this will be the quote that I read:
-Stephenie Meyer, Chapter three, The End-New Moon Can someone please explain to me how she gets : you don't want me from I don't want you to come with me. ? Grammatically those are two completely different ideas. x.x Gah! I'm turning into one of those haters and ranting about the book. Ok, if someone can give me really good examples of Meyer's writing or just something about the Twilight series from the some what good side, I'd love to hear it XD. I is going to agree with you here, Atari. Meyer's books aren't my favourite books...they don't hold my attention very well. Twilight was really wacky, with Ed and Bella just there...>< There wasn't much of a plot until the very end, and then it was over in three chapters or so... New Moon bugged me cause it was all pretty much the same few sentences said over and over again many different ways. XD Eclipse was really random...but I have to admit, I did like the part with the Volturi. 8D They's some cool vamps. RAWR. And Meyer doesn't have great...um...what's the word I'm looking for...?....writing skillz. Yeah, that's it. She's a cool person, and her other book Host looks good though; I just think she picked a rather over-used subject: Vampire and Human love and how it somehow never really works out the way you want it to. XD Then again, we're all kinda guilty of that too, since we're all here RPing with similar topics.....>.> |

Eh, I'm not too picky on the Vamp + human = love thing. Buffy and Spike did it superbly. XD In Meyer's books, I don't really get the feel of any character. It's as if they were just put on paper and left to fend for themselves. Even then they could not do that since little time or effort seemed to be put into it. In her interviews she said she could see the whole thing in her mind...but she completely tore it to shreds. For example, her sentence structures. Besides, us role players understand our characters can act against our wishes. lol It's really funny when that happens too. Back to Twilight, how can you take a character with no hopes, dreams, or even goals and make her into something decent? Through a story, the character is supposed to learn something that helps them grow and / or change. I'm thoroughly convinced all of us here know that. So...make cliche romances and the like, just add something to them. Add substance to the characters, their relationship, and keep in mind things for the future. Which Meyer is not doing. I really don't think it's the subject that's bothering everyone. I think it's her writing that kills it first, then the lack of a decent plot, and the subject matter falls last. ((Atari doesn't know what she is lol. I tried to figure it out, but..nope, drawing blanks....She'll find out who she is at some point...)) |

My sister wants me to read it, but for some reason I'm just not very interested in it. I'm not a big reader to begin with, and it hasn't really peaked my interest yet. I'm also like...really really leery about the movie...I dunno why really. Like I said it just hasn't gotten me yet. Maybe if I go see the movie it'll get me interested in the books...thats how I tend to operate! My sister loved it, which was funny because I'm the vampire freak in the house...haha. I know that at the Barnes & Noble in town, they're having a prom at like..midnight the night the next book is released or something. My sister's shopping for a dress and begging friends to go. She said if I want to go I have to read all the books first...hahaha |

That quote doesn't have much to do with technicality of writing, it has mostly to do with character. Bella has mentioned many times that she's in disbelief that someone like Edward would be interested in her. She see's him as someone god-like in appearance [references to Adonis are made] she doesn't believe some one so *ahem* 'perfect' could ever be attracted to her. She struggles with that truth through Twilight and New Moon, even as far as Breaking Dawn. So it's very easy for her to mix up what Edward is telling her, especially concerning what he does or doesn't want. I'd bet the only thing Bella heard him say was "Bella, I dont want you..." As for good examples of her Meyer's writing. Well nothing particularly striking comes to mind. I agree with some people that Stephenie Meyer is not a literary genius, but who says she has to be. She wanted to share her story with people and is now quite successful. I rather liked her stories. |

My friend lent me the series not one week ago, and I can't stop reading them. I'm a tad addicted to the series, though I can't tell why. I'm up to the third book now. And I agree with Ongaku, it's more about the character than the grammar. Pretty much, I agree with most- if not all- of Ongaku's post. I didn't think I would like it at all really, and some of my friends seem to fall into the hater category as well. It starts off excruciatingly slow for my tastes, but I held on to my friends saying that the series is good. one of my hater friends actually tried to read the series, and didn't get past the fifth or sixth chapter. Ironically, it picks up after the sixth chapter. >_> Told her that, she didn't seem to want to give it a second chance. For the most part, it seems to start off that way to build up her character, to show you what she's like, allow you to understand her way of thinking. For that reason alone, the series is meant for a certain type of reader. |
| Well, forgive me if I never come up with something for my signature other than, "HOLY CROW! I've never given my signature THIS much thought before!" | |
