I keep seeing this term so much now in the chat and everywhere else when it comes to music. Like when someone said Drake and Kanye used to be good but they suck now. I haven't really heard any of their older songs, but it gets me thinking, why were they good until they got famous? Why is any artist good until they achieve fame? What does "sellout" mean? Is it someone that strays from the distinct style of music they once made? Then can artists not explore and transcend into different styles of music without being considered "sellouts"? Discuss

Someone sells out when they do something solely for the purpose of getting money. No one should have a problem with artists changing their styles out of artistic evolution, but it's different if someone changes their style just to cater to mainstream opinion or popularity. |

It's the hip thing to do. I'm starting to sound like that with a lot of artists I like though :/ "Muse peaked with OOS/Absolution" "The only Killers album I really care about is Hot Fuss." "Weezer haven't been good since Make Believe" (though the mileage varies a lot with Weezer). Same with Alexisonfire, Bravery, Keane, the Mars Volta... a lot of them, my favourite albums are the first or second one... I guess for the most part, by changing style they are moving away from the sound that made people like them in the first place. But then, if they kept releasing the same shit over and over, fans would bitch that they keep doing the same stuff so it's really a lose/lose situation. Though I'm really really annoyed that Muse sold out to that shitfest that is Twilight

it all really depends on what role you take in it.If your the musician,it's just hate and its common and it doesnt bug you, because its supposed to be expected when you make it big and your stuff is just heard ad nauseum. But if your the listener or the consumer it's always looking for something new and fresh with variety. It can be percieved that some people sell out and give in to what the music labels want so those labels can profit.Certain examples of this can be traced back to Kanye west's earlier work with through the wire and jesus walks, everyone loved it.Now fast forward to now.Everyone either thinks Kanye is either part of the illuminati or his music isnt as great as before. Why?People got tired of his style. He stopped being the flavor of the month.People got tired of jumping on his dick so they went to find somebody else's bandwagon to jump on AND his music just wasn't cutting it anymore. In the case of Drake, that's bandwaggoning too.I remember first hearing Best i ever had on a hip-hop station way before the states were playing it and i knew he was going to be a big mainstream rapper.Someone requested it on the states,he got a small following.Said following continued to snowball(of course collabing with Lil wayne and trey songz helped). He's still maintaining a big following, but it's evident certain people are jumping off his bandwagon. Why?Again, they were just bandwaggoning and never really liked his music, and i dont get why.His style hasn't really changed since he released his first music and that's what pisses me off.If your going to say you like someone's music and then turn around somewhere down the road and say "OH NOW HIS MUSIC SUCKS",EXPLAIN WHY.But at the end of the day, musical preference is like that dog that sniffs a corner for two hours for no reason and then they hear there owner calling them to go elsewhere and they blindly follow because they're told to follow that direction.A real fan of an artist isnt going to stray away from there favorite rapper or singer or guitarist or whatnot. In a nutshell though, your a sellout only when the fans decide your music sucks, when you piss somebody else off or you stray away from what made you succesful in the first place. On a small note,i believe city is mine or do what you do was Drake's first single. |

BLACK EYED PEAS. I don't feel the need to elaborate, it should be quite obvious. :] In my opinion, selling out means only making music to make money. :| When they abandon everything that made them great. |

Therefore say you based your music around how record companies are ruining the music industry, and you were just an independant artist, not making much money but getting your point across through your music. Then you sign to a record company, get millions of dollars, and abandon your original idea in exchange for making shit music and getting lots of money for it. I think it's thrown around too much now tho. Like a large percentage of artists get into the music just to make money right from the start. Therefore they're not sellouts, just douche bags (Kanye, etc.) |

Everyone gets worse overtime. I don't know why, it just happens. Drake's So Far Gone mixtape was fucking amazing, but that was when he wasn't famous. Now he's famous, he made his debut album and it was terrible. Terrible. Kanye, I admit it because its true, was way better in '05, but he is still quite good in the present. Other examples of people getting worse are Rakim, LL Cool J, Eminem, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne etc. But I guess that's what the newer generation is for. J. Cole is someone releasing his first debut album in October, and it will kick ass, that's for sure. But who knows, maybe he'll turn out like Drake?' Everyone doesn't realize this. Everything these days are all just based on "Hype." |

Mainstream artists aren't meant to last. The record company signs them, sucks as much money out of them as they can, and when they stop making money they get fired. Then they drag some other ignorant fool into it all. |

True. They over-hype their artists, and when all the hype dies down in like 5-7 years they start to go underground. Well, it happens to most artists at least. Jay-Z and Eminem have been in the rap game for a long time, and their songs are still hitting mainstream. |

They start to go underground? Wut? I've never heard of an artist who went underground after being mainstream lol. They usually live a terrible life, get arrested for some sort of drug possession, some commit suicide, go bankrupt, etc. |

Rakim is underground now. Lupe Fiasco is too now I guess. They never played the leaked track "I'm Beaming" or "Past My Shades" (He is featured in it) on the radio or anything. |

Atlantic Records kept refusing to release it, but there was a petition on Twitter to release the album, and a lot of people followed/signed it, including Lupe Fiasco himself. After a while, Lupe claimed that Lasers is officially coming, but still didn't give a release date. I think it'll come out by the end of the year. |
