 I noticed earlier today that mom, I believe, was perched in a high branch at the nest for almost an hour. That was the longest I've ever seen a parent remain at the nest since I began viewing. She appeared to be vocalizing and kept looking down below her. Dad visited briefly as well. Just wondering if you could offer some possibilities to her behavior today. Were you near the nest attempting to take photos at this particular time? Do parents act this way to coax the eaglet back to the nest? Or, were we just lucky to observe her for that time frame? Any thoughts would help.

I've noticed both eaglets returning quite frequently to the nest in Maine. Just wondering if this nest on Santa Cruz is very high and possibly difficult for a young eaglet to return at this stage of his development?? So many questions!!! Sorry.

I think the female was panting rather than vocalizing when she was at the nest today. Flying is energetically expensive and in this weather causes the eagles to heat up quickly. We are starting to wonder if the adults have been perching on that branch all along and that is what the eaglet was vocalizing at much of the time. We were watching the video feed most of the time because we would be too close to observe the nest directly from any point where we could actually see into the nest (we prefer to be at least 200-300 m away when observing nests).

I think the eaglet will return to the nest, but is out enjoying its new freedom (it has spent the past 13 1/2 weeks confined to the nest). The adults are surely bringing food to the eaglet, or it is going to them when they have food. You should here the racket that fledglings make. They seem to be constantly yelling at the adults and chasing the adults around when they have food. I don't think the adults will purposefully coax the fledgling back to the nest, but it should be a spot where they meet up on occasion. The nest is not very high (about 10 m or so) and is mid-slope, so it should be no problem for the fledgling to make it back whenever it wants.

 Thank you for your quick response! You're the best! I love that the fledgling makes so much noise! Typical youngster gaining independence, huh! I know the red-tailed hawk babies around here make a lot of noise too! I just love to listen to them all communicate! Have a great day!
