Good Day IWS Crew, How is the grass land eaglet doing with it's fledging. It seems so close to the cliff, I was wondering if that could be a dangerous area to fly from. Will the parents direct the eaglet the other way. You all have been doing such an amazing job restoring Santa Cruz Island back to it's normal habitat. Thank You

We expect the grassland eagle to fledge within the next two weeks. The bluff near the nest site is only about 5 m tall and may be the best spot for the eaglet to take its first flight because otherwise it would need to take off from flat ground, which is a bit harder.

Any ideas as to why these parents made their nest on the ground? Is a ground nest rare? It seems like a ground nest would be more susceptible to predators, and as Dr. Sharpe mentioned, it makes it harder on the baby to take its first flight. I'm just curious as to why the parents would choose to make a ground nest.

Hi, guest.... Here's the link to an earlier thread in which Dr. Sharpe answered some of the questions posed on this thread. Hope it's of some help!
