I keep hearing the term "Fostering" and I'm just wondering how that is done, exactly. I've looked around the IWS site a little but really couldn't find out how it was done. Sounds like 12 week chicks are put in a nest with other adult eagles. Is that how it's done?

Fostering is done by placing young chicks, usually 5-12 days old, into nests from which we have removed the real eggs for artificial incubation and replaced them with fake eggs. The adults incubate the fake eggs until we have a healthy chick to place in the nest. This technique is very effective and the adults readily accept the chicks.

Now that would be something to see! Do you have to wait till the adults leave the nest and the fake eggs in order to place the chicks?
Is it true that the adults can 'smell' the human's touch on the chicks?

When switching the eggs or fostering the chick the adults get off the nest as we approach. Most birds don't have a sense of smell, so we don't have to worry about them rejecting the chicks just because we've handled them.
