Ah, I see the answer to my hacking tower question about food here. Duh. Now I would like to know why you still band and put transmitters on the eaglets when you could use microchips? |

Hi Emma Rose, it's Patti. The eagles still need a transmitter so the biologists can track them. These transmitters must be very sophisticated tracking tools. I have wondered if a micro-chip could be used instead of the leg band. The micro-chip only identifies the bird, as the leg band does. It doesn't replace a transmitter, though. Sorry I confused you. It's been a long day.

Correct. We could use a microchip in place of the leg band. However, everyone would need to carry around a chip reader to identify the birds. They are sometimes trapped, injured, etc. and people report the band number to the feds, who then contact us with a capture report. Using only the chips would not allow us to track the birds because the chips are passive and need to be activated by a reader from a few inches away. |
