Peter: Who was the lucky biologist that first discovered the successful nest/hatching of Cruz?? Just thinking about it...I bet their heart was pounding right out of their chest with excitement when they discovered it! |

The nest site was located during a boat survey of the island looking for nests. Dave, Jessica and Chris were on the boat. Chris hiked over and confirmed the nest a day or two later. Jessica was the first to confirm incubation, and we were all there when the chick hatched. |

Peter: Oh how excited you all must have been when the egg hatched...how great you were all there to share it together! I certainly hope you all celebrated that day in great style....or did you just learn that from us? |

Okay, Dave, Chris, Jessica, and Dr. Sharpe,Could one or some of you just write at some point let us know what you were feeling when you first spotted the nest, incubation, and of course, watching Cruz hatch! Jessica, what did you do when you confirmed incubation? You must have been out of your mind with excitement! Who did you call/tell first? What were you all talking about when you witnessed the first eaglet hatching in the wild in over 50 years? What was the first thing you all did? And yes, how did you celebrate?? <_< |

On hatch day, I was up on the hill watching the nest through a spotting scope, while the others were watching the camera feed on a TV monitor in our tent blind. I believe I was the first one to see Cruz on hatch day and all I saw was a little head pop up above the grass. It was quite exciting after having to help all the other chicks on the Channel Islands for the past 10 seasons that I've been working on the eagle project. We had champagne on ice back at the field station in case one of the eggs hatched. We were cautiously optimistic, even after the first egg didn't hatch, especially when the adults started showing some strange behaviors the night before the hatch. This was probably because Cruz was vocalizing and moving around in the egg. The two successful hatches this year are great news for our northern Channel Islands restoration project and we hope to have even more successful nests next year. |

That had to have been so exciting. I wasn't aware that Cruz was a twin. |

This was the first time I learned of a second egg as well. I am so happy that an indigenous Santa Cruz bald eagle exists in this world! Maybe next year, we'll have two eaglets to watch. |
