Dr. Sharpe, have there been any sightings of the West End chick who had broken his leg? (Is it A-61?) Is he doing okay?

Thanks!

It was last on Anacapa Island. Its transmitter may have malfunctioned because we haven't received data since the 19th.

Is your team near that island at any time to see if they can catch a glimpse of him? If the transmitter malfunctioned, what will your team do to possibley locate him?

Thank you for your quick response, Dr. Sharpe.

If an eagle dies, its transmitter would continue to work, right? It would just show that the eagle isn't moving. If an eagle goes into the water and drowns, would the water shortcircuit the transmitter?

I guess what I'm asking is, to put it bluntly -- Does the non-receipt of a signal lead you to believe he is dead? :(

Bird: I wondered the same thing but was afraid to ask....what happens if they drown? But I'm thinking the gps unit must be waterproof to hold up in rain....yes?

Peppermint, that makes sense that the transmitter would be waterproof. Thanks for pointing that out. I sure hope our little guy is okay and that the transmitter is just not working.

I wish I had ElaineRuth's talents and could post a big picture of my fingers crossed!

We are getting sporadic data from the bird, but all the points are within a short distance of each other. We are hoping it may have dropped the transmitter, or has a favorite night roost (most of the data is from nighttime hours). We can't access Anacapa for most of the year because the brown pelicans are breeding there. It is the end of the breeding season now, so we should be able to get over there in the next month to look for this and other transmitters that we know have been dropped over there. Anacapa is the next island to the east of Santa Cruz.

Thanks for the follow-up, Dr. Sharpe. I will keep my eyes peeled for any updates.

Interesting about the brown pelicans and not having access to Anacapa for most of the year. This forum is a wealth of information.

Thanks, again, Dr. Sharpe.

Interesting infomation with this question.

And....I hope the West End chick isn't in trouble.

If I'm not mistaken, but I am a lot--Anacapa Island is located in Ventura County. (As opposed to Santa Cruz Island being in Santa Barbara County.)

Edit: OK, I have to be honest. I get very uptight about drownings.

Patti,

You are correct, Anacapa is in Ventura Co. and Santa Cruz is in Santa Barbara Co. Also, as I understand it, only the very east end of East Anacapa Island, by the lighthouse, is closed to public access due to pelican nesting. Actually, the whole rest of the Anacapa Island chain is closed too but there are no trails there and access is limited by year round restrictions.
