Joanie, we've got the US Open on over here, too. Gotta catch up on the videos (posted here) that I've missed the past few days.

Have you guys checked out some of the neat stuff the IWS has up on the new pages? I ran into one glitch, where the photos don't show on one page. Let me know if you experience this, please? Thanks!

The Tongva Native American page is neat--and gives a link to the local Chumash--which have a center over in Thousand Oaks. I have to check that out and will post that link here.

Margie... Page 4, 2nd from the bottom, Sept. 9 Observations is where you will find the link to EagleDuo's video....
You are in the area of the Bolsa Chica Reserve also.... maybe 15 minutes away? We should get together for a nature walk and to see the new cut-through that was just completed last week after years of dedication by folks that finally made it happen... Maybe we will be lucky enough to spot an eagle!

Bummer, I guess you're right. I swear I saw especially the left one's blings and Transmitter. Shoot. Maybe I need to be smoking something. And nestful thinking needs to be in the Cruzinary.

Thanks Tiger and Joanie for the info on where to find EagleDuo's video.

Eagleduo the video is great, you must have been so excited to see him/her! Can't wait to see the rest of your photos.

Yes Joanie, I am close to Bolsa Chica and want to go there soon. I would love to try a nature walk but I have back problems so it might be a very slow walk! I have degenerating discs in my lower back. I had epicural shots in my spine which have been magical for me. :D My back is much better but still has a way to go. I try to do more things all the time, some I can manage, some I can't. So if you can stand to walk slow, I'm up for it.

Edit: I will understand if you are athletic and walk right along at a good clip. I would make you crazy as I hobble along!

Lana thanks for that info I sent you a reply. Didn't know about those people with the teardrop trailers. I'll have to check that out. Wish I could keep my trailer but I just can't haul it by myself anymore.
Hulabird, there's a lot of special "smoke" stuff (I hear anyway) in people's backyard over there. Maybe some of that smoke floated your way....I'd like to see someone with tallons in the nest too. I think Cruz is bored with her first home and wants one of her own. Can't wait for nestovations to occur with mom and dad or anyone for that matter!!!

Hulabird - I did see the eagles you circled in your clips. You are not smoking or drinking funny stuff. I got on here too late to see them at the nest so I am glad you posted the clips.

I watched the Puleston osprey nest this morning and learned a couple of things. It appears most nests have a "Lil" that peeps all the time--non-stop--and this one certainly does. Also, fish take longer to die out of the water than I thought. An adult dropped a big fish and it took 17 minutes to die (very disconcerting to watch) and the little peeper would't touch it! Just kept looking at it and peeping for an adult or anyone to make it stop flopping around in the nest.

I have been enjoying everyone's posts but it has been absolutely horrible at work so I haven't been able to contribute as much as I would like.

To all that are sick - get well (you'll feel much better)

To all that posted interesting stories, thank you, and keep it up.

I'm getting my flags ready today to put out tomorrow--everyone should!

margiew - this sounds like a match made in heaven... while athletic in my own mind, my body does not follow suit... I have severe arthritis in my spine and still may try the epidural injections in my low back but the facet injections I had in my neck did not give me enough relief to justify the expense and the time from work (though only a day, my husband had to give up at least half a day to drive me there, wait while I came out from the anesthetic and then take me back home). I did opt for some sessions of Physical Therapy that taught me some good home excercises that give me some relief - IF I make myself do them regularly ... the drugs help also :D ! Bird-watchers always have the 'excuse' to remain stationary while peering through binoculars and consulting their field-guides! I'm counting on this relative to the Santa Cruz trip on October 22nd... I have been following with interest the discussions of the relative difficulty of the hike/walk and have committed to going even if I take the 'wus' trail. Are you going? I hope so!

Cruzinary entry done, Hula-Bird! And speaking of such, Sandie, please check the Cruzinary for 'nestovations' - if it's not already there, it needs to be!

Thanks, Bee, for the reminder about the flags - mine is still at the ready to unfurl from being up Labor Day - had to take it in to keep it safe from the remnants of Hurricane John last week that caused some sporadic storm activity.

I was watching 3 hawks today, and two were over your neighborhood, I think, Bea. They came over my way and I got the binocs out. I'm getting over being dizzy and could see them pretty well. One is much bigger than the other and they make a lot of racket. I guess they're juvenile Red tails---they are light and dark on the underside..the calls are not spaced far apart at all, but they must be young Red-tails...the other solo hawk in the distance, silent, looked like an adult Red-tail. Pretty far off, but no noise.

I have posted several times in the past about hearing a horrible noise and looking up while driving to see one big bird in the talons of another big bird...but I could not see the bird holding the "prey" bird. Now I wonder if this was the Red-tail courtship "dance." Here is a photo of it--and I'll copy and paste what the Illinois Raptor Center captioned under this photo.

Posted Image

In courtship flights, males and females often lock talons together in acrobatic sky dances. They may fall together and separate only at the last minute.

Peter, if you see this post, would you know if there is vocalization during this ritual? I heard loud noise and only saw the bottom bird. They were pretty low at the point I saw them out my driver side window--not the front windowshield. It happened so fast and I was caught off-guard by the really loud noise.

Joanie, your Cruzerisms today had me cracking up! Posted Image I think we've all been guilty of 'Nestful Thinking' at one time or another!

How old are those osprey chicks? I'm wondering if they might have been not so much afraid of the flopping around of the fish but just wanting the parents to help with tearing up of the prey and feeding.

The Saanich adults often brought still live fish to the nest (although they were likely only a couple of minutes as the eagle flies from where they were catching them), and I guess it can be disconcerting to see depending on how you feel about such things. For whatever reason we do tend to react less to something like a fish than other possible prey items. The day one of the Saanich adults carried a live rabbit into the nest prompted a strong reaction from a number of people. That's understandable of course, but perhaps a good (if tough to watch) education about the world of these creatures and what they have to do to survive. The eagles have to eat, and unfortunately the instincts that they have developed to help them survive don't take into account the possible suffering of their prey. It just doesn't work that way.
