Good morning all - surely hope the fires don't affect anyone directly and for sure we all worry about the wildlife. Big fires a couple years ago destroyed acreage at the Boy Scout Ranch in NM but as nature does, it's coming back and the animals, ever so slowly, are returning!

Hope everyone is feeling better and improving! I never make a good patient! It's raining here - again - all day! But it's more and more like fall and I love it! No camping yet this month instead we will be spending a day with the Coast Guard (and maybe get rides on the boats)!! Camping will start next month - woo hoo!!

Dr. Sharpe - Glad to hear Animal Planet call for whatever reason (even if not the one we are hoping for). I too think the award may just end up being to Steve Irwin and that's great too! But just a side note no matter what - Dr. Sharpe (and all of IWS) is truly our "Animal Planet" hero! As we say here in NY - BULLY to you!!

OK time to go to work -argh........

 Okay...can you believe I haven't read the update yet? I guess that's because...you know when you're excited about something and you've looked forward to it for a long time? Well, now that the update has arrived I'm just trying to savor the moment. I know I have it to look forward to, but I just want to enjoy this feeling for just a tad more. :P

I was like this when my DVD arrived. I kept it out where I could see it and I waited for the "perfect" moment to watch it. Am I nuts??

Also, when I opened up the topics section, I was floored at all of the ones that I have not checked. What goes on after hours on this forum??? I always feel like I'm missing things! :( Before I shut down, I make it a habit of checking all of the latest posts so that I can leave feeling like I'm on top of everything here! So much for that!

Well, I better get busy! B)

Update...here I come...well, maybe after I check a few others first! B)

MaMiMoBa Mom: Exactly! I think the east coasters are a bit behind the "8" ball! I go to bed seeing only a couple pages of posts - thinking it's a bit of a slow day and get up in the morning - WHAM!! Look what I missed ........ Of course when we're up in the morning, they are all blissfully sleeping asleep - dreaming about those eagles and islands! (sigh) :(

Good morning all. I agree with you MaMiMoBaMom about savoring the moment. I read everthing except the label on my Cheerios box before I read the update. And it was well worth it. Didn't you just love seeing our baby girl standing on both of the fish with a look on her face that would keep any other bird away until she's had her fill.

Good Morning all....Hope all is well with everyone. Just saw the update and loved the pics, certainly brought a smile to my stuffy, snotty face  Feeling a tad better..that cough syrup is really something else does the trick but makes me feel like I've been on a drunken stupor for days.

I was watching the news about the fires down south and sure hope everyone and all creatures are well. The weather is changing so things could get worse. Anyone on here live close by? Do stay safe.

Enjoy your day

Good Morning Everyone,

Whilst I was trying to post my thanks in the update thread....doesn't our girl look magnificent!......
There was a bit of activity on the nest. A bird landed on the right pinecone branch...it didn't look like a Scrub Jay, as it wasn't blue. It had a brown body, what looked like a black marking on it's chest area and a little creamy on some feathers that I noticed as it was preening itself. It arrived at 9:00AM and flew off at 9:15AM after staring out to the right, like Cruz used to do...must be a nice view. As it flew off behind the nest his wing tips showed a reddish brown colour. To me it looked like a Northern Flicker but I don't know if you have these in your area.

Back to trying to post....another bird arrives at 9:20AM this time it is a Scrub Jay. It also went on the right pinecone branch and preened before flying off at 9:22AM but it returned at 9:23AM looked around and then flew off to the right at 9:24AM.

A bit difficult to see this bird as it does tend to blend in with the background.
Posted Image Posted Image
It didn't look as big as a Scub Jay.................................Name that Bird Please!

This is definately an easy one..............Today must be Preening Day at the Pinecone Branch, Eagle's Nest Beauty Salon!

Hula: I, too, loved that Cruz was standing on BOTH FISH!!! That's our girl! After I was awestruck by all the colors in her beautiful feathers, I started laughing when I saw her standing there hording two fish....but she's not mantling so there must not have been any competition at the time the photo was taken. Besides...who would argue with a Princess?

Cumbrian: I can hardly see the first bird so I have no idea what it might be. Perhaps a juvenile jay?

Elaine, you know what you MUST do now.

Cumbrian, I can't even see the bird, it must be blending better than you thought. Also, have you ever been to (I think its called) Brackenridge? Sounds like the place to be this time of year.

Edit: Brackendale

Good Morning all~

Having a really late start today got swamped the minute I came into work.

A couple of things that I wanted to cover. I was so hoping that Peter would have gotten nominated. Steve Irwin's death came after the contest was closed but maybe they will give it to him anyway because of who he was and his accomplishments. :( So sorry Peter, we sure did try!! But you know we love you and are our Hero, and of course all the rest of the wonderful Crew and Dave Garcelon. Heroes!! All of you!! :D

Second, I am hanging my head in shame today. I was almost finished with my slideshow of Santa Cruz Island last night and clicked on the wrong place and deleted most of the slides so I had to start all over again and didn't finish it yet. I just sat there looking at the blank screen in horror. I didn't know whether to cry or throw the computer. So I cried (a little) and started over. It is coming soon I promise.

I loved the picture of our girl, her plumage is gorgeous and she looks like a fierce warrior princess. She is awesome.

Isn't that one of the worst feelings ever? I've been there and know how you feel. Try not to fret too much. I would guess we've all done something similar at one time or another! :o

I do have one question about your trip. Not sure if I should post it here or on the 'Calling all Locals' thread. What kind of ladder is it that you have to climb to get off and on the boat? I read one place that it was a rope ladder and another place that it was being replaced. Thanks! B)

EagleDuo: There is a pier, the boat docks at the pier and you do have to climb up a small set of (wooden or metal, not rope) ladder like steps but there is a crew member to help and the steps are easy, you just have to use both hands to pull up onto the pier. No sweat, they even took a wheelchair person up the steps on the back of his friend.

I wish there was a way to jump up and down and shout on this thing. I was amazed at that camera shot of our girl. She certainly likes her fish. I just wondered how much of those two fish she will eat, hide, save. And how long those two fish will last her. I was just flabergasted at seeing her. She looks like a fierce warrior princes. WOO HOO!

Nancy...I guess you're feeling better with the cough syrup. This season changing stuff just does me in. I don't usually get chills but woke up last night feeling like praying to the great white throne. I hate that and will avoid it at any cost. Is that the way you were feeling too Nancy?

Cumbrian, try as hard as I could with these old eyes I could not make out any bird of any type except for the blue jay. I really don't know about the different species but maybe it's a nest squater.

It's such an overcast day here. My friend and neighbor will be traveling today. I hope the fires and the overcast mist don't turn to suds on the road and make it slippery. I worry about her going off like that.

I have to tell you about an experience I had going on board the island. We belonged to a time share in Oxnard that had a huge vessel that we would take trips out to the island on. It was a while after I had gotten run over by the boat and I was being very cautious. I made it up the ladder....terrified I would fall. We went around the island a bit and when it was time to leave the boat couldn't dock the seas were too rough. They were considering calling for a helicopter to take me back. Our captain took advantage of a huge swell and I jumped from the island into this huge guys arms on the boat. I don't know if that was stupid or brave, but I made it. I guess brave cause I also can't swim. That trip was pretty significant for me in many ways. And while we were there we saw a lot of seagulls eggs.
