Just got a call from my friend. She is on the other side of the Grapevine and said the temp's there is 90+. Also she said no wonder they closed the highway she could see where the fire jumped the freeway in several places. Lots of smoke and she could smell it even with the car windows closed. No sign of planes but sure they were there. The smoke was seen on the west side of the Lake. They say it's 30% contained. |

Hi all.. Back from a camping trip to Lake Casitas.. We stayed in a lawn area near the water, normally for large motor homes only.. They didn't care that we were a tented screen house.. but we did have electricity and water..I've camped there with my kids for over 30 years and only used campfire and coleman lamps, etc. This time I brought my coffee maker, a small lamp from home (for those scrabble games that last until midnight) . We were the only "tent" in the campground.. Huge motorhomes on all sides and I noticed that most of the people never come out to enjoy the reason they are there in the first place. They hang inside with the TV and air conditioning.. they can stay home for that. We saw an osprey catch a fish off of the surface of the lake.. a great white egret catching small fish on the edge of the shore and lots of wonderful ducks. My son caught two huge catfish which we photographed and then released.. what fun we had.. Missed you guys!!!! |

Ojailala, Read the Ojai Valley news front page" BLM withdraws oil leases from Los Padres land" "Our region's national forests monuments, and wildlife refuges are now safe from developement". "The Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge has been set aside as habitat for the endangered California Condor sice 1985. " This is a reason for us all to celebrate. With the purchase of the land lease, an oil company has the right to set up oil wells, drill and install pipelines . All this oil developement bordered the Bitter Creek refuge. Ojai Valley News has an on line newspaper if anyone would like to read about this. |

Lala, your trip sounds wonderful. I love camping especially in a tent with the coleman and a campfire. I have made some pretty fantastic meals camping in my day. I wonder why people go camping in RVs if they don't sit by the campfire and roast smoors and tells stories and chat until all hours of the night. Or like you, we play scrabble, win lose or draw, or yaughtzee (can't spell it). I hope the fires were not hampering your campout. |

Oh yes I would like to read it, thanks for the alert. I have seen condors flying over the area and this is really good news. I live in West Ventura and am concerned about the whole area. I fight all the growth issues here, well the ones that want to take land away. I am for refurbishing what we have and not taking open land. There are so many empty buildings and strip malls that I do not see the need to take land that houses wildlife and we certainly don't need executive homes all over the hills for people to call and complain that a cougar or bear is in the swimming pool and have authorities come kill the animal. Sorry pet peeve. I will check out the Ojai Valley News, thanks again. |

Environmentalists and rural landowners credit Los Padres National Forest Watch, a non profit environmental organization that works to protect public land from damage caused by oil developement. I'm SO HAPPY!! Can you just imagine the mess they would have made. |

Ojai Hikers.. I read that this morning and am also thrilled!! We don't need a big brother in the forest.. Teri, I feel like you do.. why build those homes in the hills and then complain that the wild animals are eating your cats?? because your cats are now the only meal available to them.. |

The reason we opted for the grass and hook-up area is that we had a 4 month old and 3 year old with us and this time of year is the yellow-jacket season..They live in the ground (taking over old gopher holes) and lay their eggs.. when you disturb the hole, the guards just pour out of the hole and sting you over and over.. I know this because years ago, my kids and I were whacking at weeds near our house and I hit my hoe into a nest... We all ran like crazy to the house and the only thing that stopped them was the shower inside my bathroom.. clothes and all, all the kids and myself in the shower.. I was stung so badly, mostly on the head, that I could not shampoo my hair for a week.. the pain was horrible.. If you ever see a "bee hole" run in the other direction.... |

Ojailala I used to love to go camping at Casistas. Even after I got run over by the boat in the dock area. Wish I could do that again....only no tent. And I love to fish. Got many a great fish from there. But it eludes me why people sit inside those RV's and watch TV!! Isn't that the very reason for trying to get away? It's the perfect opportunity to TALK to the people you're with kids or friends or neighbor in the next campsite. I love to sit outside by the fire. So I am off to school. But will be back sometime tomorrow. I have to take my friend to the airport in the AM. Have a great night all. |

My daughter had her 16th birthday at the lake. It lasted 3 days, no boys, you have to be in and out of the camp by 10 p.m. They were so cute three tents full of girls. I would go back and forth with pizza and cake. On her birthday, day, we rented the big party boat with the sun deck. Really fun. Troth, I tried to up load some pictures of where we hike, but wasn't able to on photo bucket. I will try again when I have more time. The lake is good, it's a quiet place, because you can't swim in the water. It our reservour drinking water. They say it's easier to clean out oil the sweat. (gross). |

Hi guys: Tuesday I started a long message, and got nearly to the end and it disappeared, so I went to bed. Argued a case before the Court of Appeal in Ventura yesterday and then went to do my presentation for the Bird club. There were about 40 people there and I handed out all of the brocures and showed the DVD. They stood up and applauded the DVD and several said that they would make contributions. Hopefully, they will. Great update on our princess and her friends. It looks like she was standing off a number of crows or ravens in the background. IWS Thank you, Thank you I am not feeling bad anymore. I hope everyone else is doing better I will check in later. skellis. |
