Good morning, Teri. I'm half here. Still trying to wake up. I love the cooler weather, I sleep so much better at night! The nest is so clear and quiet this morning, it almost looks like a still shot. ![]() A beautiful 'spotlight' approaching in the upper righthand corner. |

Hey, I see the IWS crew is in the hizouse! What's up IWS crew? HAPPY FRIDAY. My second favorite day, used to be my favorite until the Wednesday updates. Was there a party last night that I didn't know about?? Very quiet around here. Yesterday on my way home I saw a group of about five birds 'ringing up' or circling over the Canejo Grade, in Camarillo. I almost crashed trying to get a good look at them. They were good sized birds so I am guessing crows maybe. They were putting on quite a show because there were so many of them together. Do you find that you are way more aware of birds in the environment now that we are part of this forum? I am always looking up!! Which is a good thing in more ways than one.

The birds you saw may have been vulchers...(can't spell) I have seen them act like that up here in Lompoc when there is a deer or some other dead animal near by. I used to live in Newbury Park before moving north.

Larma, your right about them being vultures, I totally forgot about them. They were big. Thanks for commenting about that, now I will know the next time I see some. They were circling over a huge open space area so they probably spotted something. I think we have turkey vultures here in VTA Cnty. I just know I love watching them soar and circle, I wish I could do that. |

Teri, I hope everybody is getting over to your slideshow. Thanks for the incredible photos--what a treat. I loved them and am going to go watch it again today! Those birds you saw on the Conejo Grade could also have been Red-tail hawks--cause that's what I see up here in the Cam Heights. I see them over toward Bea's house (from the air) and they swing by my house. Earlier in the week I saw 4 of them riding a thermal. It's taken me this long to figure out that I hear them early in the a.m. on clear warm days...and on overcast mornings, like today, I haven't noticed or heard them as much. I also see them to the east of my house, so they soar the hillside. It's really nice. I hope to see the Red-tail courtship ritual in the spring. I assume it would be in early March before laying their eggs. Watch for them hanging on to each in the air by their talons. I think I caught the tail end of it before they let go last spring, but I thought it was a "prey" activity. It was something! ~~~Watch for this next spring~~~ |

Good Morning all. Hope everyone is well. I'm still on the mend and took another day off work to accomplish it! Very windy up here in Northern California I sure hope that those fires are under control. I know those Santa Ana winds can really play havoc. Yesterday as I walked out on the front porch to get some fresh air, a big turkey vulture flew right in front of me. Hung out just catching the thermals soaring for several minutes. Really caught me by surprise. Smaller birds are having a heck of a time flying in this windy stuff. Have a good day all

Nancy, glad you're resting and on the road to recovery. I'm copying Eagle Guy's direct link to the hilarious Comedy Central Steven Colbert Daily Report--this one is about A-46. It is very funny. You may have to click on the red bar at the top of the screeen to disable your Pop-up blocker. After that, it should download. Don't miss this one...and as Peppermint said: Cumbrian, you must SEE this! You'll love it! The Col-Mandos Edit: I tried sending the video to myself & it worked. Check out the small "email envelope" under the playing video screen--you can send it to friends. Another way to advertise. This link should work for the Colbert Report piece. There is a commercial before it. http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/the_col...playVideo=72184 -------------------- Peter Sharpe Institute for Wildlife Studies Bald Eagle Restoration Program |

It's nice and calm here on the coast this morning. A bit overcast but it's trying to break up and the sun is peeking through...no wind here. But we often don't get the Santa Anas here in Carpinteria....just all the "stuff" from the wind settles here and plays havoc with allergies. Payroll day for me...and I promised to take my son to Big Dog during his late morning class break to get some clothes. Have GREAT Friday everyone!! Tomorrow is...........football day!! |

People I am so upset I can hardly breathe. This morning at about 4:30am. I was hearing an owl hooting/cooing and it was so pleasant it put me into a sweet dream about owls. I don't know what time this happened but I heard a loud noise....like a shotgun. It just terrified me. Car alarms went off, people were awakened around me, and I suddenly realized someone shot a gun of some kind. I pray it did not hit the owl. But I surely didn't hear it any more. I was so upset. Troth you are so right. I have become so much more aware of what is above me than ever before, now that I am on the forum. Not that I didn't care before and didn't look in wonderment at them. Don't forget about Ravens. There was one that used to eat the dogs food at a friends house. It would fly down and if no food was in the dish would peck at the window. This young bird totally adopted the house and would eat out of the dog's dish while the dog was eating at the same time. Wish I had taken pictures! Nancy...well, about time you are on the upswing. It's never a good idea to go back too soon. This way you can continue to recoop for the weekend and be bright eyed come monday. You're a smart one!! School was fun last night. We sure are a diverse bunch of people. I think handwriting analysis is going to be a fascinating class and a valuable tool to help people understand themselves better. |

Sandie: Most probably the owl was frightedned away by the sound of whatever you heard. Some idiot probably did NOT find the owl to be soothing and shot a gun up into the air to scare it away so they could sleep. I'm sure the owl flew away....who could see anything well enough to hit it at 4:30am??....except an owl, that is!

Sandi, I agree with Patti. It's most likely that the sound scared the owl away. But who would want to do such a thing. Their gentle sound is so soothing. We had a pair of white owls the lived in the top of a tall palm tree two doors down from us that were so beautiful. We didn't see them very often and we never heard them, but we loved just knowing they were there. And what a treat when they'd silently fly by us.....sometimes within a couple feet of us. Don't know what kind they were other than they were huge and appeared to be pure white at night (the only time we saw them). I've tried GoodSearching to find out, but the only white owls I can find (so far) are not native to our area. We were so upset when the owner of the property cut down the palm tree. We tried to talk him out of it, but he was adament and cut it down anyway. I cried when I saw the owls finally surrender and leave their home to find a new one as the top of the palm fell to the ground. I'm getting all misty-eyed just thinking about it again. Dave & I are also more aware and interested in the birds around us. I think we were both amazed at all the different birds we saw at Lake Hemet last week. I know I've taken for granted the birds I see around here every day....except for hummingbirds. I love watching them flitter around! I don't dare put out a bird feeder to attact any birds here though cuz of all the cats that call our backyard home. |
