You're welcome, Eagle Duo. Thank YOU for all the great shots! I'm sitting here at work, and I clicked over to check out the Two Harbors Nest. I yelled, "THERE'S AN EAGLE ON THE NEST!!!" (My co-workers are used to me.) I'm glad we got to see it and share it. |

Patti - I too have red-tails in my area. Every spring I have a pair of red-tail adults that teach their young to fly and hunt on the telephone poles in my neighborhood. I have some great shots I will try to post of them. They come every spring since I have lived here. They may not be the same pair every year but they come to the poles every year. I have seen them position the young on the cross T of the pole and then demonstrate how to fly and how to hunt. Observing one day the adult flew into the yard next to mine and swooped up a rat and brought it up to the chicks to feed on. One time they left one of their young on that pole for three days, I would go out all hours of the day and night to check on the chick and see if it was still there. I always know when they are in the vacinity because of their calling, and it is loud. So when I hear it I run out and scan the horizons (in whatever I am wearing at the time cuz I am "that woman")) I love the red tails. So I think that the birds that I saw on the grade were vultures because of the sheer size of them. Isn't it great to live where we can enjoy this kind of occurrence. I feel pretty lucky. EagelDuo/Bird: I loved the screen shots of the Harbor nest. |

Sensitive Material...The Dark Side of Raptors: An agent in my office told us that this morning at 5 a.m. her friends 3 year old chijuajua dog go snatched from the front porch of her home, while she was with the dog, by an owl. She lives in town , not encrouching on the national forest, so this must have been a huge shock for her. I was noticing this morning a lot of raptors out with there young, hunting. In fact I saw a hawk with a mousy type animal in it's mouth flying with her young one screaching behind her. It's getting a little cold at night, so they must need to bulk up on food. My aviary gets frequently visited by hawks, some times the size of a 2 year old child. I quess that is the price we sometimes have to make to live in the mountains, coexisting with natural habitats. I am very careful with my animals because of coyotes, I really wouldn't expect an owl to swoop up my dog. I hope she didn't report the owl. I don't report mountain lion sightings, I don't like fish and game animal control. No thank you! Guns!! No thank You!! Any way, say alittle thank you prayer for the little doggy. I hope he is feeding some young owls babys.

Oh no this is so sad. Usually chijuajua's are pretty fiesty and alert. Poor little thing. Yes unfortunately a sad price to pay. I did not know that hawks got so big. Do red-tails get that big?? Wow, maybe I should be more careful with my cats, but they are cowards and run like heck into the house when the birds come around. I agree with no animal control and NO GUNS ever!! I have been fighting the shooting range above my house on the hill for years and just last year they got the boot to move the gun range. Yea!! That is why I was glad to hear about the win for the Bitter Creek battle with the oil companies. Baby steps but steps in the right direction. |

Hey guys Nice work Eagle Duo with those captures. I got home and in the mailbox was a postcard from my aunt who spent a week in Oregon. I got so excited when I saw it I thought I would share it with all of you. It certainly is all part of our 12 step NESTATHERAPY program for sure. For those times when when we need a fix. Enjoy ![]() |

Thanks for the great pictures of the harbor nest being occupied by both an eagle and a raven. Thanks also for sharing the eagle postcard. Both are beautiful. |

Love the picture on the postcard, Nancy! Thanks for sharing it with us and tell your aunt she has good taste! Have a larger scan of it? Would make a gorgeous desktop wallpaper! p.s. The timestamp on the Two Harbors pix are PDT. |

When I popped over to Two Harbors cam to get an eagle fix, I looked at West End and it's a 3 eagle nest? Would never have guessed that would happen. I've flitted around on the IWS site but of course not seen everything - so little time and so MUCH to do. Guess I need to do some more flitting or do it more often. |

Teri, that was really interesting--how you see Red-tails teaching their young. Next spring I'm going to have to pay a lot closer attention and watch for the very young Red-tails with their parents. Bea may see more "child-rearing" than I do, because she actually sees them in trees near her home. And I agree, we are very lucky to have these creatures in our sky-yards. Ojai Hikers: I think I would be very afraid to have a small dog out and have often thought of owls picking up cats. I am so sorry about the owl getting that dog...what a nightmare for your friend. Parrot people can never assume raptors will not swoop down and pick up your beloved parrot sitting on a nice outdoor play perch. It does happen. I know people who have lost parrots this way. I've said this many times in other posts, but it can never be repeated too often. Better safe than sorry. Parrots like sitting in front of open windows and that's safe. There are smaller hawks around here, not just Red-tails. |
