Excellent!!! I wore my t-shirt to the swap meet today. Nobody commented on it. People in Hawaii don't know about bald eagles. I'll have to wear the can around my neck next week. |

Have we heard from Skellis? I was wondering if she had eaten spinach before she became so violently ill. Do hope she is better. Hulabird you need one of those little jars marked "eagle fund" instead of "bingo" or "casino" fund. A friend of mine used to have a "casino" fund one and always made sure it was in plain sight when her children visited. Goodnight everyone. |

Hi all, Just a little fire update for anyone curious... My hunny and I went to the Lobsterfest in San Pedro (at LA Harbor) today, and on our way home at about 6:30pm we could see a huge stream of smoke from the Day fire streaming across west LA County (probably Ventura County too), out toward the ocean. It was easy to trace the smoke to the mountains where the Day Fire is burning, and it certainly looks like it's still huge! It was really windy at our house this morning and I don't know if these are Santa Ana winds, as it was cool this morning, but it sure looked like the smoke was blowing west at a strong clip. Normally our winds blow east. I'm waiting for the 10pm news to get more info but I checked online and saw that the fire has burned over 30,000 acres so far and was within a mile of a mobile home park. They also said this may be the worst year for wildfires in the US in over 50 years. I know it's part of nature and all (the area burning in the Day Fire hasn't burned since the 1960s), but I grieve for the animals. I'm also furious when I hear about possible human causes (rumor has it this Day Fire may have been started by a camper or someone else burning trash). I don't think careless humans are part of the "natural fire cycle." |

Lana, I too have heard that this fire was started "accidentally" by someone burning trash. What I don't understand is, they said it was started in an area that was UNACCESSIBLE, and that is why they could only battle it with helicopters the first few days versus ground crews?? So how did that person get there and what was he/she doing there? Edit: Ojailala mentioned that the Condor Sanctuary is now in danger also? Have you heard anything about that? |

Just speculating, but maybe it was a backcountry camper/backpacker who didn't want to pack out their trash? I'm already finding my inner peace here -catching up since I had to be the designated driver for the Losterfest today!

KCAL 9 news just said the fire is only 30% contained and confirmed that those are definitely Santa Ana winds fueling the fire, with up to 60mph gusts. Still no homes burned but the fire is heading toward the Sespe Condor Preserve. Yikes! |

Welcome back again Lana. I think we need a missing person's thread so people can check out, check back in, and be reported missing. I need to know where you are. You may be sick and can't get help for yourself. Anybody wants to email my your phone numbers, I have free long distance and will come looking for you if I don't see you on the forum. If you are alone and think a separate emergency contact would be appropriate, send me that too. I WILL check on you. Serious bidness peeps. Any of you can have my phone number and are welcome to call me anytime. Home is 808-672-0602 and cell is 808-383-5147. Or you can email me your contact info to save yourself a LD call in the first place. |

Hi: I didn't get food poisoning from spinach, but from my own cooking, which went bad in the refrigerator. I think I hgad such a bad timer of it because a friend gave me some medication (over the counter) which he said helped him, but it just made me sicker. If I had been sick one more day, I was going to go to the emergency room, but I survived. Good thing I was so sick, I had two bags of spinach in the frig. but had to throw them out b ecause it made me sick to think of eating them. I am getting ready for a tough week and then I go on vacation the following week, so I might not get online often. I will be going to Florida and then a one week cruise in the caribbean with my baby sister. I am looking forward to it (and a trip to Parrot Jungle Island to see the St. vincent Amazons and other unusual parrots). I will try to drop in while I'm gone as my computer is going with me. Thank all of you who worried about me. I hope everyone is not affected by the fires. Last month the Yucca Valley/morongo fire got within a quarter mile of my sister's place and she had to be ready to evacuate (including two macaws, two parrots, two dogs and three cats, and a husband - not necessarily in that order) for almost a week. Fortunately, it turned the other direction before it was contained. Everyone take care, I will check in later. Skellis Skellis |

We had a very good day with old friends. We had lunch with them at a local restaurant and then went to their house to play cards. We played the Eagles DVD for them first and Jann set up GoodSearch for them. We probably bored them to tears with eagle talk all day but they are very good friends and humored us by pretending to be interested. |

Hi Hula! Didn't mean to alarm you. I've been working like a madwoman (my punishment for taking a week vacation). I have dropped in on the board when I can but often it's late at night like now. Gotta keep up with all the posts! Thanks for the offer to check on missing members and for posting your phone numbers for emergency contacts. You are the best! You made me realize that I need to teach Ben (my sig. other) to use this board and/or members in case of an emergency. I am well and healthy here but this fire does have me worried about other friends/members, like those in Ventura County. All of this makes me realize once again how vulnerable we all are to nature's power! I've meant to get an emergency evacuation plan together forever: bought most of the stuff but honestly haven't gotten around to assembling it together in case we need to evacuate for whatever reason (fire, earthquake, terrorist attack, etc). I've also heard that you should always have a contact person outside your geographic area. So how about it, friends? Do you know what you'd do if you had to suddenly evacuate your homes? Are you prepared to take your pets? Hurricane Katrina comes to mind, especially all the people who had to leave their animals behind. |

I'm glad you're feeling better, Skellis. Food poisoning must be the worst! I hope you have a great time on your cruise: sounds like a lot of fun! Take lots of photos to share with us! |

Aww, Dave, I'm sure you didn't bore them! Who in their right minds could be bored by such a magnificent story as this? |
