Ojailala...If you have nowhere to go and need to evacuate you can certainly come here! Not that I am much further away from Ojai!!! But you and anyone else is welcome too.

I remember 3 years ago, and that fires that burned in this area. For several days the smoke was so thick that you couldn't see the sun and the smoke and ash was intolerable. One night I was awakened from a dream in which I was being evacuated. As I awoke from the dream I heard a lot of commotion outside, in the way of sirens, traffic, helicopters and a howling wind. As I opened my eyes I noticed that my room was bathed in a red glow. Sitting up on the bed and looking out the window,to the north, I saw that the entire hillside was ablaze. I watched as 48 homes burned down about a mile, or so, up the street. I felt very lucky that I lived about 1/4 mile from the evacuation line and we we're not forced to leave. We had large embers falling in the yard and on the roof, but fortunatley none caused any damage. A scary time indeed. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you, and everyone potentially in the path of this fire, and pray that the men and women working the lines are unimpeded in doing their jobs and getting this fire knocked down in the quickest and least damaging way possible.

I realize wind is the last thing they need at the fire, but even a little breeze on the coast would help. Peppermint - it was really nice of you to mention people with respiratory problems should stay indoors. At age 67 I am very athletic and in good health. But my lung capacity will never be better than it is at 66% (because of 54 years of smoking) so even though I can do some marathons, humidity and smoke are two things a person with respiratory problems has to consider. I've really enjoyed being a part of this forum, and it has been educational, but never more so than Peppermint's alert. THANK YOU PEPPERMINT, BIG TIME!!! :)

If any of you know where Larry Hagman lives...there is heavy smoke in just that area at this time. I have friends in that area and can not talk to them...no answer. I just have to pray they are ok. Was finally able to speak to friends in Santa Paula and she is fine. They are going out to dinner and will check in with me later.
Whew.....

Hi all, I too was finally able to get in touch with my friend who lives in the Steckle Park area in Santa Paula. She is and has been in San Diego for a while and had no idea about the fire. Her daughter is having a baby (went into Labor today) and she is now calling her neighbors to find out how close it is to her house. I told her I'd get her cat if she needs me to, and she said she'll call me back in a little while.

I thought Larry Hagman lived in Oak View....so I guess I don't really know where his area is.

LaLa and Darrell: Sounds like you have reallly had close calls...how scary!!

helenb: glad I was able to help someone with that alert. My stupid neighbor is out there rinsing off shrubbery and washing the ash off their car....like it won't need to be done again tomorrow?? I called his wife and told her to get him inside and forget about all of that out there....and then we had a discussion about stubbornness.....kinda reminded me of He who cuts trees....

Peppermint too funny...MEN...well, that's all that need be said about that I guess.

If you go up Wheeler Canyon Road you can barely see his house way at the top of the hill, and the infamous tower he is always complaining about. Where that is on a map I have no clue! Sorry I'm directional challenged.

Bea glad you were able to get your friend. Cats are very strange people. They really prefer their own environment no matter what else is going on.

I called my neighbor to find out where her cat carrier is...just in case.

Teddy Neal...thanks for your thoughts.

Gosh Eagle D...what a close escape.

My house burned in Christmas in 1976. I shudder everytime I think about it. Having your own fire truck assigned to your house is pretty special..Forgot who posted that but lucky you.

I'm going to preach a bit here because I'm worried about all our forum friends who are west of the fire. If you aren't getting updates on the internet or tv, keep your radio on to one of the news stations like AM1520, AM1070, or AM640.
We were talking on last night's forum about making sure we all have an evacuation plan in place, no matter where we live. I am sending my thoughts and prayers to everyone in Ventura County but please make sure you're ready to go if things get worse.
Make sure you have gas in the car, a fully-charged cell phone, emergency phone numbers (not just 911, in case that's jammed), portable radio with fresh batteries, medicines you need, lots of water, some towels (to wet down and put over you and/or your pets), a face mask if you have one or something else to cover your mouth & nose.
If you have pets, make sure you have carriers/cages, leashes with collars they can't get out of, food and water, and medicine for them if needed. If you have cats, consider barricading them in a room for now so you can find them easily if you need to get them into a carrier. Have some enticing treats at hand in case you have to lure them.
I remember hearing once that a pillowcase can make an emergency animal carrier in a pinch. Could work for cats or other small pets plus perhaps for any small wildlife you run across. Of course, if you have a box or two and can poke some holes, that's another option.

Hopefully none of you will need this but it's better safe than sorry!

Good Luck!!!

For WOMEN ONLY: also include in your evacuation kit....monthly womanly supplies!

Tri-Counties dwellers: isn't it shameful how we get NO local news fire updates because it's Sunday?????

Lana: I couldn't get any audio from the live streaming AM1520...maybe I need to reboot

Lana, Thanks for all the good evacuation advice of what to have prepared.

Peppermint thanks for the heads-up.

There's just me and my kitty Amber at my house. I am so happy I have airconditioning and can keep windows closed. Anyone needing to evacuate is welcome to come bed down in the spare room. I'm in Santa Barbara near 101 and 154.

Just took a peek at our nest. It looks nice and very clear there. Didn't see any visitors, big or small.

Edit: Next fire update on knx1070 at 5pm.

Channel 7 just did an update and it looks like Bannon near Riverside is a new fire and it pretty bad. I just took a picture of the sun it is just a fire ball up there. Also, I see all kinds of birds flying this way. Trying to evacuate the area. Smarter than some of us humans.
Lana....as I said last night I have everything in my car. You mentioned a couple of things I had not thought of....towels and a face mask. I am going to add those as soon as I am done here. I always have a box or two in my car to send things to friends.
I just talked to my neighbor. I feel better that I know where her cat's carrier is. But I have used a pillow case before and it works fine as long as you watch out for those claws!!!

Thanks Cockney2. Some of us may need to bunk together if this gets worse!!!
Stay safe everyone.
