I woke up at 3 a.m. this morning to the thick smell of smoke and helicoptors flying over and wondered where I was. My love birds where calling out to alarm us that something is wrong. ( Come fix it!!!) Grey and white ashes are like dust in the streets and on cars. I couldn't take my hike this morning , thought the air was too unhealthy to breath. It is worse now, at 5pm. Can't see the blazing sun that is out there because the sky is so grey. Drove home and saw 5 fire trucks at my beloved trail head!! Santa Ana winds are blowing this way. I have to find out how the condors are doing. I was here in the 1985 fire that burned the intire Topa Topa and Sulphur Mountain range to char. None of our range is on fire, but fire dept. must feel like it is close. So very sad for the wild life that make the Los Padres National Forest home. They have been recovering from the fire in 1985. I'm not worried about us here in Ojai, just the Fillmore Santa Paula area. Maybe I should worry, The planes started flying over about every 15 minutes since about 3:30. Now the planes are flying over 2 at a time. I'm not worried about me, I can get in my car and leave. What about the wild life?. I wish I could do some thing for the wild life. In 1985 we had the fire dept. from arizona helping us. Wish we got their help a week ago. California wild fires!

I'm reading the posts and am so sorry about the fire. I don't have the TV on and today it seems better in Camarillo, so I thought things were looking up. I am so sorry that it's not at all as I hoped. The Simi Valley fire a few years ago made our Lhasa Apso very ill--and the vet said that after that fire, they saw a lot of dogs in the ensuing weeks. My other dog was fine. The sky here is white with higher overhead smoke, but I don't smell anything. Actually, there is almost no ash here. I'm going to turn on the television. |

The VenturaCountyStar online posted an update on the fire at 4:30. As of this morning at 6:00am, 80,000 acres have burned. It more than doubled in 12 hours. Excerpt: The fire was about five miles north of Fillmore and 10 miles east of Ojai. ........said the fire was on the backside of the Topa Topa Mountains and moving in a south west direction this morning. More than 1,800 fire personnel are battling the blaze, he said. ...Currently, an area of north Fillmore near Goodenough and Grand roads and the Upper Ojai are under a voluntary evacuation alert due to the possibility that the fire may switch directions and head south, Swindell said. |

Patti, I also thought at first it wasn't so bad today, because here in Camarillo we don't have any ash or smoke smell. I was totally horrified when I first heard the news that it had doubled in size in only 12 hours. |

I just read that the California Condors are no where in sight ,that they must be roosting some where away from the fire. The fire was started by some one burning garbage. The fire fighters are brave and are working diligently to put the fire out. It's not very windy, so that is good. |

The smoke seems to be clearing a bit. I can now see the next ridge of mountains for the first time today. I hope this means they are getting a handle on it...gonna go watch local news for a bit. |

Hello Everyone, We are not long back from our day at the Farmer's Market....which was a total washout because of the rain which started this morning. This is the first rain we have had in months, so we really need it but all the while we were there, we were thinking about the people on this forum, that are perhaps in harms way with the fires. Now, having read all today's posts I just wish that we could send this rain down to Ventura to help both people and the wildlife......... All we can say is please keep alert, and tuned into whatever news station you can get, and STAY SAFE. Lana and peppermint, that was great advice that both of you posted....during a crisis certain important things...like medications for yourself and your pets.....get overlooked or forgotten. I am a great believer in lists.... |

The 6pm KCET news says that Ojai, Santa Paula and Fillmore residents are being advised to evacuate. As I said previously, I have a spare bedroom, living room couch and lots of floor space if needed for sleeping bags. You are welcome to come camp out with me, and you can bring your pets if they are inside pets. My phone # is 805-683-1507. Pat |

We could use the rain!!! Some REALLY LARGE Planes are flying low over Ojai to Santa Paula now. The sky is clearing to the north away from carp. and the planes are flying south. It makes my adrenaline go up. It's like being in a war zone. There goes another one that is 3 in 3 minutes, I have to go see it.. There were three in the air at the same time. OMG one flew right over my house about 200ft. above it. Here goes more. The fire is going down!!! The have had enough of it. There go more planes..Crazy!! I better go you will all think I'm nuts. |
