Found this on the Red Cross website:

"In the event of a disaster or local siren activation, tune your radio to one of the Emergency Alert System radio stations for Ventura County: KVEN 1450 AM - KHAY 100.7 FM - KMLA 103.7 FM (Spanish)."

Site has two more tips if you evacuate that caught my eye: wear sturdy shoes and bring a fire extinguisher.

Anyone have info on whether or not you should shut off your home's gas? Is that just in an earthquake?

I am now smelling smoke here in Canyon Country. I am about 25 miles southeast of the fire. Surprisingly, we had blue skies and no smoke all day here, so maybe the winds have shifted or died down?

Skellis, good additional tips for what to take! Someone last night mentioned taking your computer: something I hadn't thought of but makes a lot of sense!

I have a question for anyone in the local area. TV says conditions will be the same tomorrow. Since I know for sure us elders will be confined to quarters (no "Curves"), has there been any news on the schools? For sure they won't allow athletics, or would they? Will schools even be in session? Peppermint?????

I'm inside again. The planes have stop flying by. Probably because it's dark. The planes have to come in close to the fire to drop water. Ojai, Fillmore and Santa Paula will be fine, it's the back country, sespe area, that will take time to grow back its beautiful wild animals. Fox, rabbits, deer, bears, mountain lions, hawk nests and all the others.

Helen, Thacher school in Ojai, a private school, evacuated their students to Ventura because of the air quality. I don't know about the public schools. My husband wants me say how great the firefighters are. Super hero's in his book.

Ojai Hikers. your hubby is soo right! Firefighters deserve so much more gratitude than they get. They are risking their lives for us every time they respond to a fire.
Thank you ALL Firefighters!!

Does anybody know if they still use the inmate fire fighters from the prison fire camps? I know one of my former co-workers used to be on that detail and she would make over 100K a year just in overtime during the wildfire season.

Helen, I also heard the Condors were no where near the Condor sanctuary, they are probably roosting away from the fire. I hope the is a fact.

helen: there was a bit of fire news on the 6:00 news before Focus at 6:30. No mention yet about schools. There is to be an update at 11pm on KEYT with the firemen down in the Castaic area. In past years when the air quality is bad from fires, school is still in session but the County Medical whatever-his-title-is issues an alert. Usually the kids are kept inside for P.E. and recess and athletics programs are advised to stay inside as well. When my son was in high school, the football team would do some abbreviated running/drills in the gym instead of outside. I can't remember what SBCC did last year during the Moorpark fire....I know they had to makeup a game during their bye week because of it. I think it's kind of up to the discretion of the coaches and if nothing else they have shorter practices. Tomorrow is "films day" of last night's game so hopefully will be a lighter workout. Being Sunday, there may be no alerts issued until first thing tomorrow. Best bet regarding schools is to watch local news at 11pm and then again tomorrow morning.

I was just outside talking to my neighbor. It doesn't smell smoky....unless I'm just getting used to it...and the air felt nice and cool. Now I have to decide whether or not to open up the house for the night to cool it off before the heat tomorrow...I envy those with air conditioners!

CNN finally has a report about the fire and is saying that Ojai is now the main concern.

I'm re-learning how to post photos on the forum. Hope I get this right!
I found this satellite photo on the USDA Forest Service website: http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/imagery.ph...000&day=2006260
You can see why all of you in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties can't breathe today!
There's also a lot of smoke out over what I believe is Santa Cruz Island; I think that's the western part of the island right where the thick smoke from the mainland is starting to dissipate and curl north.

Ojai Hiker...gosh I am ssssoooo glad you finally posted again. I was really worried about you after your last post. Please please call one of us if you need to leave. I don't have a lot of room but what floor space I do have you are welcome to it.

Hulabird My friend works at California Youth Authority and she is in charge of the fire camps there. Don't have any infor from her as she is in Tenn attending to her family after the death of her brother and his wife just a few weeks after him. Three children with no parents is heartbreaking. She is like mother earth. Both her sons were killed violently and now she is raising her grandson and two others of another sibiling that passed away from Cancer. She has had her share of grief! But I am sure the fire camps are out there.

Lana I think that was me about the computer. I have all my pictures on there or on CD's now. But I hadn't thought of all my papers. I have a lot of geneology work that I would need to take that I don't have on the computer. I need to take care of that soon. My next project! If only I knew how to work this stupid scanner I have!! Sigh...so much to learn so llittle time.

Lana: Actually, I think Santa Cruz is the one closest to the coast where it looks fairly clear. That looks like the shape of the one on the maps. Anyone else more familiar?

Regarding taking your computer in case of emergency...unless you have a laptop, the easiest thing to take would be a recent backup. Another reason to keep our backups current. I keep my accounting data file backups current....but I'd better work on my other valuable files! I've been thinking about getting a portable external hard drive...maybe this is just the incentive I've been needing.

The USDA Forest Fire services do not use inmates mostly bc they are dropped into isolated spots, my very first boyfriend used to work for them, he'd be gone for a week, back for 2 days to sleep and then gone again during fire season. Winter was spent skiing....
I think the local Fire Dept will use inmates from less guarded facility camps, but only when needed.

Lana that picture is incredible!
