Lana: Actually, I think Santa Cruz is the one closest to the coast where it looks fairly clear.  That looks like the shape of the one on the maps.  Anyone else more familiar?

I believe that's Catalina where the sky is clear. I recognize the Isthmus and it's the closest island to LA.
Now that I look at a map, I believe that the "fat" piece of island sticking out from the smoke is actually Santa Rosa. That means Santa Cruz is closer to the mainland and not visible through the smoke.

Goodness! Please stay safe everyone. Gosh Peppermint, no wonder you love the rain so much! I hope you get another downpour soon!

I can't imagine what these days are like for all of you living so close to the fires??? My prayers are with all of you, your pets, friends, neighbors, and all animals.

Please keep posting to keep us updated, informed, and at peace, knowing you are all doing well under the rough circumstances.

Santa Cruz is the largest island and that's the one that looks partially obscured.

Peppermint...what about those new "sticks" I don't know what else to call them. I put my geneology stuff on there from my computer. Guess I wouldn't need the whole thing then huh? Better put that book on there too. I wouldn't want to loose all of that work. :o another project!!!
What did we ever do before computers!!! :P

To all of you in the path of the fire--I have lots of room for people and pets (both indoors and outdoors) whatever critters you have are welcome. I am in the high desert which is only about an hour or so from you and you are all welcome.

I will be at work tomorrow from 8-5 661.945.8880 and home after that 661.948.1320. I will leave work if necessary.

If you need help at your end I can come down and I have two cat carriers and could probably round up whatever else you need.

Add a flashlight and batteries to your list of necessities, just in case.

This is a serious offer, please don't take any chances!

Bee

I picked up a 100GB USB drive from Costco not long ago for about $120. The good things about this one are that it requires no external power and fits in my shorts or shirt pocket. Locally, Costco is the best place to buy stuff like that IMO but you can find WAY better deals online. The newer flash drives are a bit more expensive because of the 2 reasons stated above so way more convenient and portable. I also have a 20GB one that is about 1/3 the thickness of a deck of cards and is 2.5 inches square.

Two sites I like are http://www.cyberguys.com and http://www.tigerdirect.com (do not buy a full on computer from here. Only accessories)

Another cool thing I got at Costco (thinking of Bee's post above) was a package of 2 very high brightness and good quality wind up flashlights. The package of 2 was $20 when all the other webstites are selling the exact same make and model for $20 each.

Bee you offer is most generous and all the others as well. Lala and Hikers better get moving rso you don't have to sleep with one eye open and both lungs closed tonight.

Lana: yes, I think you are right now that I look at it again. That makes more sense in relation to where the fires are....amazing photo really!! I hope all our babies are ok out there with this smoke. It will be interesting to see what the weekly update says about all the eaglets out there.

Sandie: they are called flash drives and plug right into your USB port. I haven't looked at them in awhile...they didn't used to hold much but I think they are making ones with larger capacities now. They are the smallest form of storage that's out there, I think. Hulabird.....what is your advice?

HB: are you talking about the CCC...California Conservation Corps?? Is that still around? I'm gonna go do a goodsearch for that...

Definitely do a Goodsearch for CCC (more money for IWS!) but I can confirm this program is still around. I've looked into the program as an alternative for some of the foster youth I work with, who often leave the system at age 18 with nowhere to go. They have several programs throughout California. The one in Ventura County has a residential program on the campus of Cal State Channel Islands in Camarillo. It looks like a great program that does a lot of important work. I remember seeing that some of the members helped in last year's Ventura County wildfires. I imagine they're out there again, hopefully safe!

I just got home from a trip to Ventura and vicinity today! The smoke and ash are considerably diminished from this morning in Santa Barbara. Oxnard is relatively clear too, but Ventura, expecially in the hills, and Ojai are almost invisible from Hwy. 101. If you must be there, stay inside! But if you can get out I'm sure your lungs would appreciate it. Hope all the little critters are safe and sound.

Peppermint, the ones I was talking about are part of the California Department of Corrections. They are fire camps housed by low security inmates and no prior escapes, low amount of time left on sentence, no sex crimes, and obviously no arsons.

HB: here's what I found out. There are two entities, both Calif. State programs...why on earth their names are similar is beyond me! There is Calif. Conservation Corps which is not part of the penal system at ALL. The one you are talking about is the Calif. Conservation Camps program and is affiliated with the Calif. Department of Forestry (not the U.S. Forest Service). They are carefully screened, etc....and yes, arson canNOT be on their record, LOL. They are out on the front lines as part of the hand crews...shovels, etc Sounds like a good program.

I'm sending my good thoughts to all you people in the fire zone and my appreciation for the selflessness of those who are offering shelter. I think you all need to jump in the car, haul it over to Eagle Duo's house and have a big ole slumber party and plenty of inner peace.

You're too cute, Debi! :D Yes, anyone that's willing to drive all the way over here is welcome to stay with us. Just remember I have pets, a husband, and grandkids....don't expect a clean house! lol Leyla is spending the night with us tonight, but we still have the top bunk on the bunk beds and a sofa....and lots of floor space....if we move the toys aside! Pets are welcome too, of course!

I thought Larry Hagman lived in Oak View....so I guess I don't really know where his area is.

LaLa and Darrell: Sounds like you have reallly had close calls...how scary!!

helenb: glad I was able to help someone with that alert. My stupid neighbor is out there rinsing off shrubbery and washing the ash off their car....like it won't need to be done again tomorrow?? I called his wife and told her to get him inside and forget about all of that out there....and then we had a discussion about stubbornness.....kinda reminded me of He who cuts trees....

Oak View is a small comunity up highway 33 just before you get to Oaji. Some people including me at one time think its part of Oaji but Oaji is further up the mountian. My son just moved from Oak View.

So Larry Hagman could very well be in either place.
