Ojai Hiker - thanks for the news about the condors. After I had posted that, I seemed to recall someone saying they had flown out before the flames got anywhere close to the sanctuary. Aren't we glad they are so smart. BUT NOT AS SMART AS CRUZ!!!

Peppermint - I figured you would be the most knowledgable on the schools. Thanks. The reason I ask is because so many of them only have fans in the classroom, and even with mine on all day, I started getting a headache by 1:00 this afternoon and still have it. We can still smell the smoke right now and that's why I would have liked even a small breeze - just to give us a break.

Can you imagine what the firefighters go thru? They deserve all the credit we can give them. I have written letters to the Newpress several times about our firemen, and of course they never got printed.

Larma: I used to live and grow oranges out on the east end of Ojai. Ojai, Oak View, and Meiners Oaks are three distinct communities. Sounds like Larry Hagman is up way further than I thought.

Thacher School that evacuated is just up the road from where I used to live! I never worried much about fires when I lived there...was more concerned about frost and having to get up in the middle of the night to start wind machines in the winter. My how times and weather have changed! I hope the peacocks are ok...if they are still even there with Mrs. Fairburn.

OMG Eagle Duo, you don't know the relief I felt when you said "Don't expect a clean house". Since you're coming to visit, you have to remember that I have at least 40 parrots (in the house but you aren't in danger of gifts), 4 dogs, 2.5 cats, a husband, and worst of all me (which forunately is mostly confined to my nest area here at the couch and coffee table). Martha Stewart isn't my housekeeper and I have way less energetic things to do than clean constantly. Thank you for your understanding :D

Hulabird: what is .5 cat??????

Helen: I've had a sinus headache since I got up. It's a bit better this evening...at least it's cooling off outside. I do wish a nice gentle breeze would blow the smoke on out to sea....maybe over to Hawaii so Hulabird won't feel left out?

Helen, Thacher school in Ojai, a private school, evacuated their students to Ventura because of the air quality. I don't know about the public schools.

They didn't close our schools here just because of the smoke 3 years ago, unless they were in a direct path of the fire. However, we didn't get any mail for 2 days because it was too unhealthful for the mailmen to deliver mail, so don't be surprised if you don't get mail for a few days.

My husband wants me say how great the firefighters are. Super hero's in his book.

Yes, indeed, and please remember all the sheriffs that risk their lives during these fires too! They are often overlooked and need to know how much we appreciate all they do too!

p.s. The fires out here aren't that close to us at this time, so don't let that stop anyone.

Hulabird...are you thinking of the California Youth Authority. They also have a fire camp. My friend is in charge of that unit. She is the one in Tenn.

Peppermint...I thought of the name of them as soon as I closed but I knew Hula bird would pick right up on that one!

When my guy and I were driving up Wheeler Canyon I saw this house way above the rest of the world with this huge antenea near it. I said wow look at that house and he told me that belonged to Larry Hagman. Now where that actually is...is anybody's guess.

.5 cat equals the neighbor's cat who still belongs to them but has adopted us and eats dinner at our house every evening.

Sandie, I'm not thinking of CYA but CDC.

Larma: Meiners Oaks is west of Hwy 33 as you go up to Ojai and just north of 150, not too far from Lake Casitas...they have a great hardware store there...or at least used to.

Sandie: I assume Wheeler Canyon goes up from Wheeler Gorge? If so, that would be off Hwy 33 on the other side of Ojai...north? I get my directions all confused.

Although I'm not affected by the fires other than unhealthy air, I would like to thank our East Coasters and all others who have sent us all their best, and are so concerned about us. Thank you! This group is just great!!

We're coming to see you and your birds, Hulabird, not your house. :D Less than 3 months to go now too! :D :D Anything we can bring you from the mainland you have trouble getting over there....besides a bald eagle, hummingbird(s), and/or Dr. Sharpe? Sorry, I don't think they'd make it through the airport screening. :o
