Naturegal, those pics are so incredible! Can we get some history? Oh man, what it must feel like to get pics in that resolution? Dr Sharpe, do you think we can buy just one camera like that this year on Cruz's nest? I have my inkpen & checkbook in hand. Can you even imagine what the traffic would be like, as well as the donations we'd we grabbing with a camera with that resolution? We would eat "that other nest" alive! And not only that but they are planning bigger things this year so the competition must be on. |

Hulabird - There was no history on the photos. All it said was that the photographer was unknown and where the photos were taken. |

Super photos of the eagle nest! WOW - what clarity - almost like sitting on the branch next to 'em! And now I've learned something else - I can "save as" on that cam and get a picture! WOW again. I never thought to try that at all. Now if I can just learn the other way to capture.....

See the link I posed on the previous page. The photographer is Martin Smart and he has his own site with all of his photos. |

Here are some interesting photos of clouds. They were taken by Jorn Olsen of Hastings, NE. The clouds are called Mammatus clouds. They do not precede a tornado, or foretell a storm, but are formed when air is already saturated with rain droplets and/or ice crystals and begin to sink. The worst of the storm is usually over when these clouds appear. They are quite rare but beautiful. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Video streaming and taking digital still pictures are kind of different things, so it wouldn't help much to have a higher resolution camera on the nest, as you would lose that extra resolution in the streaming over the internet (it takes a tremendous amount of bandwidth to stream video to even a relatively small number of people). Audio would be a great thing to have if it's possible and that's something that doesn't require a whole lot more resource over the video. I don't really think of it in terms of competition - IWS and HH are both doing great things to educate and support bald eagles and I am happy to participate and support both organizations as much as I can. I think Dr. Sharpe and the folks at the Ventura office would need to consider how much bandwidth they have and how many people they can support to plan properly for any future changes. The remote nature of Santa Cruz poses additional technical challenges. |

I have to agree with Ostrich2. I actually came to this site by accident. A friend put me on to the HH nest and someone there posted a link to here! And I was hooked! I enjoy both forums (more so here) and I love watching both nests and I love all three of the babies that I had the privilege to observe. I have learned so much. I don't feel there is a competition and I certainly think there shouldn't be. In the HH book there are photos taken by Dr. Sharpe! Everyone is trying to do the best they can to help and the end goal is the same! The eagles succeed because of cooperation and sharing of information and effort! I feel so lucky to be a tiny speck able to participate in any little way to help and support. I take my hat off to all of the "pros", their staff, etc. and of course to all of you - my newest friends whom I truly enjoy experiencing this adventure with! Oh yeah - I'm hoping that all are ok with the fires, etc. I saw a report on TV earlier tonight! I've only been close to one (and that was about 45 miles away) when we had a big fire our east on the island. That was awful so I can only imagine out your way! |

Naturegal what great pictures of those eagles...Those certainly are very much a part of our "nestatherapy" until the next season. Nice captures of the two eagles today in the south end nest. Nice joint effort hulabird and bird. Good practice for when the real season begins. Hope everyone is doing ok with the fire situation. It was fairly warm up north here and very calm in an eerie sort of way. Hope it doesn't indicate anything bad. |

Ostrich2 - Thank you for sharing those wonderful eagle pictures. My favorities were the single chick with its beak wide open; and I loved the eagle picture where one wing is feathered like a fan. I love taking pictures of birds and flowers, wish I could get that good. Wonderful. |

Maybe I'm not looking in the right place, but the "Questions" section only applies to Channel Islands and/or IWS. Right? And I can't find any "Tech Questions" section, so I am up there in those cumulus clouds. My question - is microsoft word included in the computer package, or is it an added feature? I was trying to learn how to do clip art, and I can't go anywhere without using "microsoft word." Seems to me I was told at time of purchase that it was only needed for office use and I wouldn't need it. But I could be thinking of something else. Any comments or suggestions? Maybe this is something you night owls could comment on. |

helenb: Word is not always included. My dad's computer did not come with it loaded and neither did my son's new Dell. Did you look under Videos and Photos for Tech Questions? I can't remember where it is...I'll go find it and bump it for you. |

WOW....look at all I missed just by going to the store and working a little. Jeesh Those were absolutely fantastic pictures of the Eagles. Must have been taken with a great lens...too bad we can't get that with the video but Dr. S gets some pretty great pictures too. The air seems cleaner somehow. I have not uncovered Bernie all day. Poor baby. I got one of those Ionic Breeze delivered today... WooHoo! Maybe tomorrow won't be that bad. Got to go to LAX and pick up my friend from Memphis. I'll be gone til tomorrow. You all have a good evening and I'll catch up with you tomorrow. |
