I agree......thanks Eagle Duo for that link to part of the Memorial service.......that is one strong little girl to stand in front of all those thousands of people and not only read her speech of tribute to her dad but to put emphasis on some of the words too. Really chokes you up...... |

I listened to the Steve Irwin links posted here and was so proud of Bindi. Amazing little girl--so strong and focused. She's got her daddy's spirit~~ Kath-Oz--after my Slinky had her tumor removed--same type as your Larry's, she had to take it easy for the rest of her remaining months. She was a quiet girl, but still strong in spirit, if not in body. My husband always resented her because she refused to walk by his side. She always walked ahead of him. Ha ha. I used to call her my Warrior. She had been abused, pretty severely, before we took her in. I love the lyrics to Home Among the Gumtrees. In the '90's, I read the most incredible novel by an Australian and wish I could recall the title. Think it may have had "bones" or "bone" in the title. Does this sound familiar to you? I wish I could recall the author's name. Incredible literature. One of the best fictional works I've read. |

helenb: the fire post being set up at Ventura Fairgrounds is a command center for the firefighters. A good place to coordinate all the different units that are assisting with the containment. Last I heard it's 20% contained, slowly burning away from Ojai towards Lockwood Valley. They are trying to get a handle on it before winds kick up again this weekend. |

Patti, I did a GoodSearch under Australian Authors/Bones.......it is amazing what they can find....Anyway, don't know if this is the book that you mentioned..if not then at least we have another 4c in the pot for the IWS! [Veronica Brady's Can These Bones Talk? is a different approach to understanding the process of colonization. Brady focuses on the Australian experience and pieces together, through colonial literature, anthropological practices and European ideologies, the interaction between identity, colonialism and popular culture. Brady's aim is to understand the preconceptions that arrivals to conquered lands bring with them. Within this cultural baggage, Brady shows how self-perception and insecurities shape the relationship with land and "otherness". Her aim is to understand the dynamics of the colonial legacy by deconstructing our perceptions of self.] |

Was that BONES by Bill Pronzini *The nameless detective*??? I think my mother read the book and loved it, but I havent read it. I've been attending uni for the last 6 years part time and dont get a chance to read much. Another interesting Aussie author is HANSEN DEREK who wrote a series of 4 books called 'Lunch With Mussolini', Lunch with a Solider, Lunch with.... etc. I read these two, not the other two. The theme is a group of men who have lunch together and tell a story at the lunch. The Lunch is held in Australia, and the stories are historically set. Cant wait till I finish (this year) and have time to do recreational reading! |

Patti and Naturegal, thank you so much for the pictures of the eagle on the West End Nest and to those of you who posted the heads up. I was so concerned the other day that #69 had lost her white tail feathers because they weren't showing (like in the first pictures that you all posted today). I thought it was very funny that in the last picture of her, she lifted up her wings and showed her white tail feathers, almost as if saying, "Here they are! I'm okay!" Even though Peter had said that we probably couldn't see the feathers because of the way she was turned, I was still a little skeptical. As you can see in the pictures, it's like she hides them. I'm so glad you got that picture of her in particular. Now, I feel better. Thanks!

Eagle Duo thanks for the link to parts of the Steve Irwin memorial service. What a strong little girl Bindi is. Brought tears to my eyes. You can see that she is also there for her Mom. Brave little one. All seems to be quiet on the nestern front....Cumbrian thanks for those captures and picking up all of the visitors to the nest. The nest is pretty at that time of the day. Now if we can only imagine the shape of that little visitor to take on Ms Cruz's shape, now that would be something

Cumbrian Just got back on here for awhile and I went to my controls and checked those setting and the answer is yes on all of them...Don't know what is wrong but I will live without seeing them all. I'll just have to imagine it all. I am going to go meet the new owner of my trailer....I hope he can take better care of it than I could. Sounds like he and his wife will have a great time in it like I have always had. They plan on restoring it. I never saw this memorial but maybe Steve's daughter will take up where her Dad left off? If she is this strong now she may become more than just a replacement for her Dad. LEIGH I had a wonderful Dobbie. He was the grand master of protectors. I called him Koenig Des be Schuter....or something like that in German. King of the Protectors is the translation. He used to sit in my little Fiat Spyder in the back seat with the top down. Kid in the front street and she was taking Cello lessons The Cello was strapped on the luggage rack. All of us going to those lessons was a crack up. Then stroll to the beach with Syd the cockatoo on my shoulder, Koenig one one side of me and speckle the cat on the other side down to the waters edge. Specks could only tolerate the ocean water for so long then she was flicking it off her paws. She probably left us and cleaned her paws for hours afterward. |

Cumbrian---Thank you for the Search! The author's name doesn't quite ring a bell---yet I do think it was a female. And the title, well, that could be it! Maybe I should go into Amazon.com with that title...for I'll surely know if I find it there. Especially if they let me "open the book." Kath-OZ---I'm leaning more toward Can These Bones Talk? The books you've listed sound like interesting reading--and thank you! Thanks to both of you! Edit: forgot to tell Robin Bird that I'm happy I got that tail shot also. It was my first attempt. It was easy, but not the same with the SC webcam. Maybe I need to upgrade my Media player, but I think I have the latest free player. Someday when I have the patience, I will go into our Tech section. I've tried before and it just doesn't work on my computer.

The guy in the blue shirt was from The Wiggles, also a children's oriented musical group, VERY popular in Australia. I saw them in Australia when Rachel was a wee one, she's much too old for them now. I'm sure he was there for Bindi and Steve Irwin was very popular with all children. Bindi stole the memorial with her speech. Her Daddy was beaming that famous smile down on her... My eyes were swollen today from crying during the memorial. Welcome Polly & Leigh! Please edit your profile and put in the city and state you are hailing from. Love the avatar, Sandie, and I see the blinking eyes.. OK, just a reminder, everyone going on the Santa Island Cruz trip needs to call Mary or mail your payment in before October 8th. Please see the Calling All Locals Thread or email me @ cruzfans@aol.com. |
