Lana, thats about right, but PLUS 7 hours, minus a day - for the West US Coasters. My Mom is AZ, so add another hour and also its diff during daylight savings time.

Oz, I did have it backward!
"Subtract 7 hours and add a day" was my formula to call from the US West Coast TO Australia, so I didn't wake up my friends there!

I spent 6 weeks in Aus after graduating college (Uni), almost all of it in Sydney at a flat in Neutral Bay with a gorgeous view of downtown, the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, etc. I also spent a week at Uni Ski Week in Mt. Hotham (I didn't think there was any snow in Australia. Boy, was I wrong!), a few days in Vaucluse near Bondi, and a few days out in the country in Orange.
A long time ago...but I remember so clearly how hard I fell in love with your beautiful country and its people!

KLJinOz is going to post shortly. We talked about your post. I've been there myself and she took me to the place where she lived. I defer to KLJinOZ.

Lana, Too Small a World, I lived in Neutral Bay frm 1987 to 1990 on Hayes Street, near the wharf! There is snow in Oz, but not much vertical for skiing. Looks like you hit all the right spots for your visit except you missed the Barrier Reef, you might have to come back downunder for that!

I'm still awake, having just chased off a coyote that came right up to our backyard fence and was having a loud standoff with our dog. Dog (and of course Cat) are now locked safely inside, although the dog is not happy about my decision. She feels it is her job to guard the backyard against intruders.
I do love to hear the coyotes, though. This one was quite vocal about its presence.

Oz, are you going to post the video?

It's on the Photos/Video thread. I couldn't get it to play, though. Haven't given up trying...let me know if it works for you!

Oz, it won't play for me either. I had the same problem with the kokooburra videos. When I click on it this website opens up.

Oz, when I visited Australia in 1990, my friend who lived there taught me "subtract 7 hours and add a day," so I wouldn't call home in the middle of the night.
Sounds like that's about accurate, eh?

That's how I calculate Australian time.

This is a good website for times all over the world: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/

I kinda like this one:

Hi Lana
I guess you must have thought the flames were right at my door!! Sorry I was not a happy camper being abel to see the flames at all. They were quite a ways from my door but still very visible! Terrifying none the less. I got up at 3AM to check on them and they had not spread too much further. I was just out there a moment ago and I don't see flames but I do still see pleanty of smoke.

How odd that you and KLJinOz lived in the same area. The world truely is a small place. The picture she posted was quite beautiful. I'd like to go there someday.

Sandie,
Glad to hear you are okay! That DID scare me to hear you say that you could see flames, but probably not as much as it scared you! I'm glad to hear that the fire was still pretty far away but it's so frightening how fast things can change. Not to mention the threat of new fires! With those winds and all the dry brush, it just takes one idiot flicking a lit cigarette out a car window to create a new nightmare.

Hi all:

I haven't been posting lately as I am getting ready to go on vacation on tuesday. I will be going to Key West (where I lived for 2 years 40+ years ago as a Navy Brat), Ft. Lauderdale with a side trip to Parrot Jungle, and then a 7 day cruise to S. Thomas, St. Maartin, and a private island. My baby sister is going with me and is very excited because she hadn't been born yet when we lived in Florida, and other than Mexico, she's never been out of the country before. I made her get a nice shiny passport, so she can get to other countries soon.

KLJinOZ, I would love to spend months in Australia, just watching the birds, and love the pictures you post. Because I have my own business, I can't leave for more than a week or two. Not nearly enough time to make the trip.

Sandie: please take care. You might want to dampen the cage cover as it will catch more of the particulate matter, and be cooler. The Santa Anas don't seem to be as strong, hopefully that will help.

Debi: Thanks for watching over us, I will check in from the ship, and if possible send you a picture of the St. Vincent Amazons from Parrot Jungle. They are huge and amazingly colored . There is also a blue mutation Nape named "Kodak" at the park, AND HE IS GEORGEOUS. At $60,000 he ought to be.

Cumbrian, thanks for keeping an eye on the nest. I would have been devastated to have missed the visit. Clearly the renestorating is going well.

I have a ton of work to do before I leave, so will check in while I am gone, and HB has my schedule.

Hope everyopne is well and safe.

Sylvia

skellis I am sooooooooo jealous!!! And how come Debi only gets to have the pictures of the parrots etc??? What happened to the rest of us???? HUH???? Glad your sister is going with you. That should be a lot of fun to go "back in time". Have a great trip. But I'm still jealous

I just heard a siren and went out to check and the fire truck was headed down the street behind us. Hope it's not something new that way. There are new plumes of smoke where I saw the flames last night. :( . But it still has a ways before it would effect me. Wonder how Ojai guys are. :( I'd feel better if we heard from lila and hicker. There were evacuations up Highway 150 last night. Haven't heard any more news since then.
