This morning I think the total was 250 square miles burned.

Goodsearch:

Day Fire Update (Sept. 27, 1:10 p.m.)

Aggressive, proactive measures taken by on-scene fire personnel yesterday saved more than 700 structures when a quick moving flank of the Day fire jumped containments lines on Lockwood Valley Rd. Five non-residential structures were destroyed in the area. Today, efforts will be made to reestablish containment lines in the areas where the fire first jumped Lockwood Valley Rd.
Weather conditions continue to produce erratic fire behavior which hamper control efforts. In the areas between Santa Paula and Ojai, lines are holding and are being improved. Unburned fuels continue to be consumed within control lines producing smoke and flames. With 42 percent containment, 148,000 acres have been destroyed. Costs now exceed $45 million. The number of personnel now working on the incident has risen to more than 3,900.

Here is my "burning" question: If the paper said this morning that 144,884 acres are burned.. how can there be over 200,000 square miles burned.. miles are bigger than acres so square miles # should be smaller than the acre#...

Ojailala: right....246 sq miles....148,000 acres. An acre is much smaller than a mile.

From Goodsearch:

In farming communities a square plot of land which is 1 mile by 1 mile is referred to as a "section" of land. It contains 640 acres. A section is usually divided into four equal parts which are called "quarter sections", and this is the size plot that farmland is typically sold in. Each quarter section consists of 160 acres. In western Canadian farm communities, the grid roads are spaced at 1 mile and 2 mile intervals thus providing some of the dividing lines between sections, and access to every quarter section.

Therefore: 148,000 acres divided by 640/sqmile = 231.25 sq miles

Does that help?

I see the math, but a square mile is still bigger than a square acre... maybe I'm missing a link. More acres are being burned than miles.. maybe this will sink in when I think about it for awhile.. Can anyone see my point or do I need to slink off and start my happy hour now...
