I'm trying to stay off line because I'm worried how obsessed I will be next year. What if they hatch two eaglets. It's a hard knock life when there's two. I was so nervous A-49 was going to fall off the nest. When my birds are sick or breeding, it makes me crazy with worry. |

Ok...how are paralyzed veterans going to get on and off and boat let alone get around on Santa Rosa Island?? Hunting animals on an island is just the stupidest thing and has irritated me for a verrrry long time. I thought they had already defeated that add-on to that bill? I know both Lois Capps and Diane Feinstein opposed it. Barbara Boxer never responds to any of my letters. So...let's say they go ahead and allow the hunting to continue...will the NPS still go ahead and remove the non-indigenous animals in 2011? And why do we need to "provide" a place for veterans to hunt??? This issue is reallly a sore subject with me. I think they should "provide" flush toilets out there for us women! |

Hi guys, I'm still at work, but have to let you all know the sad news about the Santa Rosa Hunting issue. There has just been an update posted at the Ventura County Star, and the Bill actually got approved. I can't believe it. The article is long, so I'll put the link here. If anyone can't get to the article thru this link, let me know and I'll post it here. I'm in shock. They have approved the hunting to go on indefinetly. http://www.venturacountystar.com/vcs/news/...5030389,00.html |

what in the world are our representatives thinking? I thought the issue of hunting on the island was long over??? Good grief. I ran into a botanist from the forestery service today. He said he thinks they finally have a handle on the fire. It is only burning in the upper Ojai area now. And he did say that it was a good thing in some respects for the fire to be up there. There are a lot of seeds being germinated because of it. He said they had flames 40' high that one night that I saw the flames from the hillside above me. That a terrifying thought to me. And I always think of fire as a bad thing. When I mentioned the animals he just shook his head and kinda looked down and said there was nothing we could do. It broke my heart. He has worked 14 days straight and then went to his wife's 8th grade class on his day off to talk to the kids about the forest service and the fire etc. Really nice guy. We now have a new brush fire near Santa Clarita. Everything is so dry out. Just the slightest thing can set off these fires. We have to be so careful. |

Hello everyone, we had an early start this morning.....another day down at the Farmer's Market....it was just beautiful today the sun shining.....we are still getting some really hot days for this time of year....and overlooking our beautiful harbour....Perfect. sandie, I don't know if I ever answered your question re other vendors on our market. As well as the usual veggies/fruit/flowers there are crafters with jams/jellies, cakes, lots of knitted and sewn items plus jewellery stalls and a potter. It is quite a vibrant place and as previously posted has been voted one of the top 10 in Canada. Our nest wasn't up when we were headed out the door.....had to take a quick peek to get my daily 'fix' before heading out.....but the West End nest did have an eagle there...sorry didn't have time to take capture or post it. Thanks Jann and Patti for your captures.....great shots as usual.....also well done Patti for the side by sides. Just a point in passing though, although you can upload as many photos as you want at Photobucket, and yes, they through me too kljinusa/Karen with their changes, I think that this forum will flood control you if you try to post too many at one time, that is why I suggest only 8 photos otherwise you have to re paste them and delete the ones you have already posted. |

A visitor to the nest at 4:57PM until 5:06PM ![]() Flew in from front right, straight to left p/c branch where he did some preening. ![]() He was also looking around and seemed to be calling between the preening. ![]() Started to fly off to the right, then turned and flew downwards to the left at the back of the nest. |

I sure don't want to sound like a wet blanket, but now that the fire is 'almost' over, will you have to start worrying about mudslides when the rainy season hits? I sure hope not! |

Regarding the hunting on Santa Rosa Island: Maybe it's too little, too late, but I'm willing to contact someone to voice my disgust over this issue. Anyone know who I should contact? Regarding the brush fire in Santa Clarita: I drove past it about an hour ago. It looked like the helicopter crews were doing a good job getting control at that point. I saw two of them drop water on the flames and more copters were around, going back and forth to fill up at the nearby LA reservoir. Having watched two fires flare up in my city in the last week, I'm really impressed at how quickly the fire crews were there to deal with them. I thought they all might be up fighting the Day Fire at this point but thankfully, it looks like they keep some crews around to handle the local situations. Of course, I DO hope that the Day Fire can get under control very soon! |

We all do have to be so careful about fire, especially here in the southwest during the hot, dry months. Yet on my way to meet my friend for lunch, I saw two people throw lit cigarettes out the window. This has been a pet-peeve of mine for years. I just don't get it......how these "bleeeeeeps" can be so blind!?!?!Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now. I just had to say something before I burst! Great shots of the black bird, Cumbrian!

Thanks for the captures, Jann & Cumbrian--I caught some of the raven, well, I think raven. I have a heck of a time trying to capture an "exit" shot. Was out this afternoon and missed the eagles on the WE nest. Really glad you caught them, Jann. Yes, I'm also disgusted by that Santa Rosa hunting bill. To me, the concept is warped. Guess I'd better start my chores. |

Lana: keep contacting your congressmen/women...it may be too late but if people get up in arms about this, it's possible to repeal it later...after the hunters seriously impact the endangered species. I wrote to both Lois Capps and Diane Feinstein a few months ago when the bill was in negotiations. I received replies back from both of them that they were doing their best to fight it. I don't know who your representative is over there....Gallegly? Teddy: mudslide problems depend on how much rain we get. If we get nice gentle rains, they can help to establish grasses, etc to hold the hillsides. If we get a lot of rain in a short period then mudslides can be a real threat. I'm sure there will be some along the way....hopefully in the remote areas away from homes and roads. I read today the fire is now 61% contained with cooler moister air moving into the fire area...hooorayyyy!!! Lana: what is causing all those fires in Santa Clarita? |

Hard to see with the sun glaring in the camera, but there are two eagles on the West End nest:
